Resumen: This paper explores the ideological function of translation in negotiating power relations among languages in multilingual Singapore. Based on an analysis of the discursive roles of translation in multilingual literary anthologies published between 1985 and 2008, the paper argues that the power relation between English and the mother tongue languages has shifted over the past two decades. Central to this ideological shift is translation, the underlying discursive mechanism in all multilingual publications in Singapore. It has been found that the potential of a language to be translated into, as opposed to its being translated out of, is directly proportional to its symbolic capital in a multilingual society. It has also been predicted that the future trend in multilingual literary translation in Singapore will tend towards a multi-directional approach whereby the four official languages engage one another multilaterally in a complex dynamic of translation relations.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Resumen: En este ensayo, la traductora Edith Grossman reflexiona acerca de la importancia cultural de la traducción, no sólo como el medio que nos permite acceder a la literatura escrita originalmente en uno de los incontables idiomas que no podemos leer, sino como una presencia literaria concreta que nos ayuda a conocer, a percibir desde un ángulo distinto y a atribuir nuevo valor a lo que hasta entonces era desconocido. Although this story has a radical feminist voice, The Edible Woman was translated by a male translator, Oura Akio, in 1996, and his language choice for the protagonist is excessively feminine. (...) In the Japanese translation, readers are likely to find a contradictory figure in Marian and she seems to be happy to use impeccable women's language given and promoted by male-dominant authorities. (...) This fact interferes with the novel's feminist purpose. I therefore examine the effect of Maian's language use in the Japanese translation from a reader-response theory and a relevance theory point of view."

Resumen: This paper describes how mediation in translation is realized by means of inclusion and exclusion of information at the selection stage and discursive deviations at the presentation stage in the process of target text production. It discusses the effect of mediation in relation to two types of the target text recipients, one is termed professional readers representing the censoring authorities and the other the intended reading public, and their respective socio-cultural backgrounds. Our argument in this paper is that an investigation of translation from the perspective of mediation helps reveal the power struggle underlying the translation process. The detailed description of the textual realization of mediation, in particular, helps create an awareness of the various ways the target text producer may take to mediate the translation process to achieve a compromise between the author's interests and the professional readers' political concerns so as to get the translation published.

Resumen: Written by some of the most distinguished literary translators working in English today, these essays offer new and uncommon insights into the understanding and craft of translation. The contributors not only describe the complexity of translating literature but also suggest the implications of the act of translation for critics, scholars, teachers, and students. The demands of translation, according to these writers, require both comprehensive scholarship in preparing to translate a text and broad creativity in recreating the text in a new language. Translation, thus, becomes a model for the most exacting reading and the most serious scholarship. Some of the contributors lay bare the rigorous methods of literary translation in comparisons of various translations of the same piece; some discuss the problems of translating a specific passage; others speak about the lessons learned over the course of a career in translation. As these essays make clear, translators work in the space between languages and, in so doing, provide insights into the ways in which a culture makes the world verbal. Exemplary readers both of authors and of their individual works, the translators represented in this collection demonstrate that the methodologies derived from the art and craft of translation can serve as a model to revitalize the interpretation and understanding of literary works.

Resumen: Raúl Eduardo Narváez holds the degrees of PHD in Modern Languages- Specialisation: English Language [USAL] Sworn Translator - English Language [UBA], Teacher of English [I.S.J.M A- 85].He has given lectures and also published many articles about the act of translating both in Argentina and abroad. In 1994 he was awarded, by he Association of Sworn Translators of the City of Buenos Aires, a scholarship for specialisation in translation at the University of Granada, Spain. At the University of Buenos Aires, he holds the chair of "Translation and Interpretation 1" [School of Law] and of English [School of Social Sciences].At the Teacher Training College San Agustín - A 757 he holds the position of Director of Studies.
