Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories, together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist approaches.

Resumen: Is That a Fish in Your Ear? ranges across the whole of human experience, from foreign films to philosophy, to show why translation is at the heart of what we do and who we are. Among many other things, David Bellos asks: What's the difference between translating unprepared natural speech and translating Madame Bovary? How do you translate a joke? What's the difference between a native tongue and a learned one? Can you translate between any pair of languages, or only between some? What really goes on when world leaders speak at the UN? Can machines ever replace human translators, and if not, why? But the biggest question Bellos asks is this: How do we ever really know that we've understood what anybody else says-in our own language or in another? This book is all about how we comprehend other people and shows us how, ultimately, translation is another name for the human condition.

Resumen: With over 200 contributions by authors from some 50 countries in the form of lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations and seminars, the content of the XXth FIT World Congress reflects the full range of development of the globalized language profession. It covers a wide area, from high-tech topics related to day-to-day work such as post-editing of machine translations or working in the cloud, through quality assurance standards to various aspects of the qualities required for the job. Presentations on aspects of daily work, didactic models and case studies illustrate the global professional reality of translators, interpreters and terminologists in the second decade of the 21st century and suggest approaches to the problems of tomorrow. What will the work of translators, interpreters and terminologists look like in future? What challenges will they have to face? How will national markets and the international market for these services change? These volumes, which contain most of the presentations from the XXth FIT World Congress, document a host of interesting responses and provide material for a range of further discussions.
