Resumen: In western translation theories, Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory, and are notable for their prominent disagreement on the issue. Their theories diverge in their responses to equivalence, and disagree, essentially, on the functions of translation as well as the aspects of an acceptable translation. This disagreement unfolded itself clearly during a conference at Binghamton University in 1991. In this essay, I intend to juxtapose the exceptionally different theoretical approaches of these two prominent translation scholars. I also intend to show how Venuti's views on translation in practice challenges Nida's theoretical approaches to translation, and surprisingly enough his own theories particularly speaking, foreignizing and domesticating translations in which he has been extensively engaged. Finally I intend to show how Venuti's practice of translation challenges his earlier attack on Nida's conceptions of the "dynamic equivalence," "naturalness of expression" (Nida 1964: 159) and the notion of "the equivalent effect" (de Waard & Nida 1986: 9).

Resumen: This book is concerned with translation theory. It proposes an all-round view of translation in the terms of modern pragmatics, as articulated in three pragmatic functions (performative, interpersonal and locative) which describe how translated texts function in the world, involve readers and are rooted in their spatio-temporal contexts. It presents a full and up to date view of translation that takes into account thirty years of research in the field of Descriptive Translation Studies. Unlike DTS, the theory provides an account of products and processes.

Resumen: Introduction. The following chapters are the first of a series of "Paragrahs on Translations" which I began contibuting once every two months to The Linguist, the journal of the Institute of Linguists, in September 1989, and which I am likely to continue as long as I go on teaching. The format of sections and paragraphs appeals to me, since it gives me the freedom (and indeed the ́space ́!) to discuss any topic as succinctly as I like. I think that more or less self-contained paragraphs have an impact that is missing in chapters of prescribed length. I have written these "Paragraphs" for various groups of readers: firt for translators, students and teachers of translation, and even for translation theorists; secondly for language teachers, linguistis and educationalists, thirdly for public administrators, politicians, directors of townhalls, airlines, hospitals, museums, theatres, art galleries, etc. and most importantly for the general and educated reader, who is continuously and increasingly affected by translation in the strest, in the supermarkets, in public buildongs, in planes and trains, in information and tourist offices, to an extent tha has never occurred before..."

Resumen: Mr Savory is an analyser, a compressor, he gets straigth down to the difficultires and the various theories which have been evolved to cope with them. I think anyone about to engage in translation should read his book, and all readers of translation will benefit also "Cyril Connolly, Sunday Times". Savory, a former public schoool master, was born in London in 1896. He was science master at Malver College from 1920 until 1951, when he was appointed senior biology master at the Haberdashers Aske ́s Hampstead School.
