Resumen: Skeletons were unearthed recently in a medieval town in Bohemia, with evidence pointing to a ritual vampire burial. The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation planned a coproduction of this find with the Smithsonian and the History Channel. After shooting began, the producers decided to film key scenes in English and German instead of dubbing them. Translations were done on the fly while the crew waited to shoot. This presentation will discuss the rare case of a contemporary film shot in two languages on location and the difficulties encountered. The movie won a Cine Golden Eagle Award fror historical documentaries in the USA.

Resumen: El objetivo de este trabajo es reflexionar brevemente sobre algunas características generales del subtitulado para luego adentrarnos en el análisis de la traducción de los subtítulos de Elizabeth. De los muchos temas traductológicos que se plantean, analizaremos brevemente algunos rasgos del texto audiovisual, abordaremos aspectos estilísticos como el registro, el idiolecto y el grado de familiaridad entre los personajes, examinaremos algunos recursos retóricos presentes en la película, así como el léxico y el contexto en el que se produce el film y exploraremos los procedimientos de traducción más utilizados en esta película como el calco, el préstamo, la traducción literal y la modulación.

Resumen: This article aims to describe how written translations of audiovisual products change along the dubbing process until they reach the audience, focusing mainly on the synchronisation stage. The corpus is made up of the first reel of the Catalan and Spanish translations of three different films released in 2006 (Casino Royale, Good night, and good luck, and The Da Vinci Code). After a brief summary of the dubbing process and a short overview of the approaches to synchronisation found in the literature, the specific strategies found in a bottom-up analysis are highlighted, offering both a wide analysis of the general changes throughout the process and a closer analysis of the specific changes that occur in the synchronisation stage. A comparison of the strategies found in Catalan and Spanish is also included in order to assess whether different languages result in different strategies.

Sin embargo, la relevancia de la elección de un título es indiscutible: no sólo es el primer contacto que se establece con la película, sino que hay mucha gente que va a las salas de cine con este único dato como referencia. Resumen: The transfer of offensive and taboo language in subtitling may position translators' choices in a challenging and controversial situation, given the effect that such terms can cause on the audience (Díaz Cintas 2001a). Nowadays, it seems that dealing with this type of language starts to gain more attention in academic circles, as it belongs to colloquial language within a low register, and as such we do speak in diverse manners depending on the context we are in. This paper delves into the way offensive and taboo language has been subtitled into European Spanish. In order to conduct this study, the subtitling of the DVD version of Quentin Tarantino's multilingual film Inglourious Basterds (2009) has been described and analyzed, resorting to a multi-strategy design (Robson 2011) which combines quantitative with qualitative data, under the umbrella of the descriptive translation studies paradigm. Accordingly, the main purpose of this analysis is to determine any regularities in the way in which offensive and taboo language has been dealt with in this particular case study, considering the technological restrictions of subtitling as well as the translational strategies employed. Thus, this study aims to shed some light on the way this type of language has been transferred on the screen.

Resumen: IScience fiction films, with their unique features of speculative and science-based delineation of futuristic phenomena, mesmerize the audience to an unpredictable world. Subtitle translation of such films undergoes an inferential process to recover the communicative intention of the directors and makes manifest to the audience a set of assumptions by means of various stimuli. This paper adopts a relevance theory approach to investigate an optimally relevant subtitle translation of science fiction films, using Minority Report - one of the top science fiction films in the 21st century as a case study, with the aids of conversation analysis and protocol analysis of two episodes of the film. Verbal reports of 99 subjects from two groups of potential translators, consisting 73 students from Hong Kong and 26 students from Beijing, who have attended media translation courses and with some subtitle translation knowledge, were analysed. Supporting examples are also retrieved from the movie script, the TV subtitles in Hong Kong, as well as the two versions of DVD, separately with traditional and simplified Chinese subtitles.

Ya a finales de los 80 existían dos tendencias: aquellos que igualaban la pragmática al significado del hablante y quienes la comparaban con la interpretación de los enunciados, idea bastante relacionada con la aproximación cognitiva. De aquí, podemos deducir dos niveles de significado, intercambiables entre sí: el significado abstracto y el significado contextual.

El adaptador tiene que ser paciente, tener mucha capacidad de concentración y ser competente lingüísticamente hablando. En realidad, es el que hace el primer doblaje -sin grabarlo, evidentemente- de la película o episodio. Es un oficio que requiere un período largo de aprendizaje y que está ligado al proceso general del doblaje".

Resumen: This paper explores how translation of foreign film titles has been carried out in South Korea since foreign films first arrived in Korea following its emancipation from Japanese colonial rule. With reference to audiovisual translation in general and film or screen translation in particular, this paper discusses the extent of the mistakes made by Korean translators due to a lack of thorough contextual knowledge of the source language and culture. Most Korean translations of foreign films result in strange, surreal, and at best funny adaptations. Discussion regarding "bad," total, or almost total mistranslations focuses on (1) words with multiple meanings (homonyms and heteronyms); (2) slang and colloquial expressions; (3) words with culturally specific features; and (4) proper nouns and common nouns. This paper concludes that in an era of globalization, film title translation in Korea increasingly shows a trend towards transliteration rather than translation - either literal or liberal.

Resumen: In this paper attention is paid to the translation of swearing, more specifically to the problems involved in the transference of English swearing into Spanish and the translatological strategies available in order to cope with them. The original and translated versions of the screenplay of the American movie Pulp Fiction are used for illustrative purposes. The solutions adopted in the translation of this text provide evidence that, despite the lack of exact equivalence existing between the English and Spanish swearing systems, the emotional charge of English expletives may be generally rendered into Spanish without altering the stylistic register of the original, thus making possible to produce on the target audience the same effect the original produces on its audience.

Resumen: This paper consists of an analysis of the expressive secondary interjections found in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their equivalents in the Spanish and Catalan dubbed versions. The contrastive analysis of the interjections in the original English version compared with the Spanish and the Catalan dubbed versions shows that the strategies followed by the translators are different: literal translation is far more frequent in Spanish than in Catalan. Literal translation often implies an error that is pragmatic in nature since it derives from the misunderstanding of the pragmatic meaning that the interjection conveys.

Resumen: This article explores the presence of foreignization in dubbing. The author specifies that, in this context, foreignization refers to bringing out the foreign nature of the text through the creation of artificial dialogue. Focusing specifically on American films dubbed into Castilian Spanish, the author analyzes linguistic manifestations of this process such as vocabulary and syntactic structures that are too formal for the situation or simply unnatural in this variant of Spanish. It is suggested that this artificial language helps make these films more acceptable for the Spanish audience.

Resumen: Film translation in China began as early as 1949 and has been developing very fast. This article aims at providing an overview of the current situation of film translation in China and explores the two major types of English-Chinese film translation: dubbing and subtitling. Therefore, it can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part constitutes a general background for the study of film translation. The author of this article first discusses film's origin and nature, the features of film language and the classification of film translation. Of the four categories of film translation (subtitling, lip-sync dubbing, narration, and free-commentary), dubbing and subtitling are the main forms used in China. Then the differences between the two types and social preference for them are analyzed. The author also presents a summary of film translation's development and current studies on this topic. The second part probes into the details of dubbing and subtitling. This article investigates the features and technical constraints of dubbing and subtitling. The main techniques adopted in practice are illustrated through specific examples. Both forms have their relative advantages and disadvantages. In subtitling, standardization and simplification are its two important techniques. Standardization is concerned with the transfer of text mode - from spoken text to written text, while simplification is related to the technical constraints in subtitling, namely spatial and temporal constraints. In dubbing, the translator should make his translation fit into the pictures and synchronize the lines and the pictures, so lip synchronization, gestures and pauses are the major constraints in dubbing. As the two main forms of film translation in China, dubbing and subtitling coexist and compete with each other in the market.
