Resumen: It has long been recognised that language are not merely neutral, structural ensembles wich allow communication between human groups sharing the same language, and, as such, it is fair to further conclude that traslation, as a phenomenon rather than a technique, does not merely invovle a search for lexical and syntactic equivalences between one linguistic structure and another, i.e languages, but is rather more complex process set withim a wider pragmaticframework of intercultural, as opposed to purely interlinguistic, exchange.

Resumen: Al llarg dels sis capítols d'aquest llibre s'exposen de manera succinta diferents continguts de tipus teòric al voltant de la llengua, la traducció i la ideologia, fonamentant les argumentacions en una anàlisi social del significat. Partint de la concepció de la ideologia, com a instrument de regulació de les relacions socials, en primer lloc s'aborda el caràcter social de la llengua i es fa una anàlisi crítica de les teories lingüístiques. Tot seguit s'aprofundeix en l'anàlisi de la traducció com a fenomen marcadament social pel seu caràcter interlingüístic, sotmès per tant a múltiples influencies ideològiques. Les teories de la traducció són analitzades també, tot introduint reflexions sobre la teoria del significat. Un extens qüestionari i exemples de casos pràctics serveixen d'instruments per a estimular el debat entorn de les idees exposades en aquest llibre.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references.
