Resumen: The translation of Inazo Nitobe's Bushido: the Soul of Japan (1905) by Millán-Astray, the founder of the Spanish Foreign Legion (1941), has been studied from the point of view of the contexts, pretexts and texts of the source text (ST) and the translated text (TT). Nitobe's context and pretext meant that his discourse was primarily one of cultural mediation, an attempt to build bridges between East and West, but also to strengthen the position of Japan. Millán-Astray's context and pretext meant that his discourse was intended to inspire the youth of Spain, but also, and this was even more important, to strengthen Franco's regime and give prestige to the Spanish Foreign Legion. The pretexts of both author and translator can be found in the paratextual elements of the ST (1905) and the TT (1941). However, both texts have been re-edited several times in different formats, without the original introductions and prologues and this raises the question of how the inclusion or omission of this information may affect the reader's interpretation of text as discourse.

Resumen: This paper concisely reinvestigates translatorial action and observes that the 'meaning' of lexical items is not the same with the 'sense' of lexical items. The central distinctions between the two terms are that the meaning of lexical items is not only a subjective application, but is also dependent on its environment for its truth-value within any given linguistic discourse. The sense of a word however, refers to its objective use and is context independent. Meaning is viewed as having a direct link with the communicative approach to translation. The approach derives from the Communication Theory, which core assumption is that unpredictability is equivalent to informativity. Unpredictability can be unravelled by building in redundancy into the target text to avoid communication overload.pThrough a rigorous theoretical explications coupled with an avalanche of exemplifications, it is observed that communicatively generated texts appear smoother and more comprehensible than its semantic counter part. However, the writers, suggest that the communicative approach to translation is necessarily applicable in cases of use variations occasioned by differential discourse practice between the source and the target language socio-cultures. Sequel to that, use variations between languages and socio-cultures in contact often pose linguistic structures that resist semantic rendition, because it fails to recapture the ideational content of the source language text in such instances. It is the failure of the semantic approach to yield adequate text(s) at the target end that necessitates the communicative type.

Resumen: The translation, dissemination and reception of knowledge has served as an excellent indicator of changing ideologies and the major catalyst for institutional changes, language reforms and social transformation in China. However, English representations of the Chinese tradition of translation (e.g. Hung 2005; Hung and Pollard 2009) have not incorporated research findings from Chinese studies (e.g. Cohen 1995; Amelung, Kurtz and Lackner 2001; Elman 2005) and tend to provide unsubstantiated generalizations and hasty conclusions. This article uses a combination of "cultural tool" (Even-Zohar 2005) and "culture planning" (Even-Zohar 2008) as a frame of reference to provide a macroscopic perspective on knowledge translation in different Chinese historical periods as "a means of planning" (Toury 2002:?166) to promote religious agendas, modernize traditional Chinese natural studies, Westernize educational and academic systems, facilitate modernization of the state or participate in global knowledge production.

Resumen: The implementation of the American neoliberal model in Chile four decades ago, in addition to the nation's participation in the globalized world, has led to significant changes in society. In fact, the effects of the adoption of that paradigm are evident in a wide variety of areas, including that of the use of the language. For this reason, it is of interest for linguists and translators to do research on the influence of the English language and American culture on Chilean society. For this reason, the objectives of this study were to verify the presence of English loanwords in the written press in order to describe them, determine their type and token frequency and patterns of use, and infer the causes of their adoption in Spanish.

Resumen: En los últimos años, el cruce entre lengua y dominación cobró protagonismo en los estudios lingüísticos, pero pocos son los libros que indagan en el papel que cumple la traducción en esa relación. Tal como afirmaba Bourdieu, las lenguas tienen el mismo valor lingüístico, pero no el mismo valor social. Qué se edita, qué se lee, qué se traduce está determinado por las relaciones de fuerza entre las lenguas a nivel mundial. La renombrada crítica literaria Pascale Casanova analiza algunos factores -la traducción, el bilingüismo y la diglosia- que refuerzan dicha dominación y llevan a una lengua a ser más "prestigiosa" que las demás, a ser la "lengua mundial". En un extenso y detallado recorrido por la historia del francés, Casanova nos propone pensar críticamente los mecanismos de dominación lingüística a partir de la traducción y nos invita a diseñar herramientas que sirvan a la lucha de los dominados lingüísticos.

Resumen: Implied meaning is not an inherent part of translation, but it is important all the same as no one says everything while speaking. Implied messages are often perceived through shared experiences. To decode and encode an implied cultural meaning calls for a thorough understanding of that culture. The translator should be able to distinguish a consciously implied meaning from an unconscious one. In the former, the locutor passes on the message indirectly but is not ready to accept responsibility for the implied meaning. In the second case, the locutor has no intention to deliberately hide his intentions behind the words. However, this can lead to intercultural communication problems. To my mind, the attitude of a translator to these implied meanings is this: be as faithful as possible to the spirit of the deliberately hidden message, but be more explicit where the implied meaning seems to have been hidden unconsciously. There is however need for caution as the translator cannot be too sure of knowing the attitude of the author all the time.

Resumen: This article focuses on Josep Maria de Sagarra's translations of Shakespeare's plays. It starts by offering an overview of clandestine translation under Franco's regime, it considers the social impact of later reeditions and analyzes the translation criteria employed in his translations of Shakespeare's plays: Sagarra's is a natural fictive orality meant not to be read aloud but rather to be staged, and his use of formal resources like rhythm and rhyme distinguish him from his predecessors (Magí Morera i Galícia and Cèsar August Jordana) and followers (Marià Manent). Finally, the article analyzes the reception that Sagarra's translations have had.

Resumen: Cet article examine comment le canon poétique et traductif dans la Bulgarie communiste a influencé non seulement la sélection des auteurs et des titres à traduire, mais aussi la manière dont on traduit. L'analyse s'appuie sur un recueil de poèmes de Paul Éluard traduits en bulgare en 1953. Lorsque l'ouvre d'Éluard fut publiée en Bulgarie, la poésie politiquement engagée était un genre qui existait déjà dans la littérature bulgare et qui était très apprécié par le canon. Cependant, il y avait une différence substantielle entre la manière dont les poèmes politiques étaient écrits en Bulgarie et l'expression poétique d'Éluard, ce qui a eu un impact sur la traduction. Les traducteurs s'écartaient de l'original de deux manières. Premièrement, ils intégraient une vision idéologique des poèmes d'Éluard en ajoutant ou en soulignant certaines images secondaires ou inexistantes dans l'original. En outre, ils réduisaient les métaphores complexes d'Éluard à des images standard à connotation révolutionnaire et militante. Deuxièmement, les traducteurs ajoutaient des nuances poétiques à l'écriture sobre de l'original. Des rythmes et des rimes étaient introduits, ainsi qu'un vocabulaire archaïque et des inversions poétiques. Ces écarts peuvent s'expliquer par l'impact que le canon littéraire au sens large et les projets du traducteur individuel exerçaient sur la pratique de la traduction dans la Bulgarie communiste.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. Resumen: Debemos a Goethe el concepto de "Literatura mundial" (Weltliteratur) que, aunque no siempre bien entendido, se ha perpetuado a través de los siglos. Goethe llamaba simplemente "literatura mundial" al intercambio entre literaturas y literatos, y el medio para ese intercambio era, necesariamente, la traducción. En una conversación con Eckermann, el 31 de enero de 1927, dijo: "Hoy en día, literatura nacional no quiere decir ya gran cosa. Ha llegado la época de la literatura mundial y cada cual debe poner de su parte cuanto pueda para acelerar su advenimiento".

Resumen: Esta monografía colectiva pretende hacer un balance de los logros y retos pendientes del denominado «Giro cultural de la Traducción» y dar cuenta de su influencia, como paradigma de referencia, en el desarrollo reciente de los Estudios de Traducción a escala internacional. Este acercamiento crítico al presente y futuro del «Giro cultural de la Traducción», desde una perspectiva «cultural» o «culturalista», se realiza de la mano de un grupo de teóricos y teóricas de la traducción que son representativos de diversos enfoques (traductológicos) y/o lenguas de trabajo.

Resumen: This paper examines the subversive function of an anthology of Bertolt Brecht's political essays that was published in Greece at the time the student movement was emerging. The collection was launched in 1971, four years after the military coup in Greece. Drawing on the notion of frame from social movements theory, the paper focuses on the trajectory of the Greek student movement and the main frames that brought it forward as the most successful form of resistance against the junta. Then the paper illustrates how the Brecht anthology in particular captures the general climate of cultural and political opposition that created the resonance deemed necessary for the success of the student movement.

Resumen: Este trabalho se propõe a discutir a formação acadêmica de tradutores no nível de graduação no Brasil hoje, considerando, de um lado, a fundamentação teórica que estimule o futuro profissional a refletir sobre sua atividade, a se conscientizar sobre a importância sociocultural e política da tradução e, de outro, as peculiaridades de uma área em constante mudança, marcada principalmente por (r)evoluções tecnológicas. Os últimos anos foram caracterizados por estudos que consideram aspectos que vão além de técnicas e métodos de ensino para uma boa formação. Como consequência, as crenças na aprendizagem, especialmente em relação ao ensino de língua estrangeira, passaram a ser mais estudadas, devido à influência que exercem na motivação e no sucesso do aluno. Com a tradução não foi diferente. Desde o início dos anos 2000, tem-se feito pesquisas e estudos a partir das crenças dos alunos sobre o que é tradução e sobre o papel exercido pelo tradutor.

Resumen: The case study examined in depth is a comparison analysis of the classical English novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, which has been translated into Chinese seven times, with seven versions preserving the novel form of the original. The present study will elaborate on the differences between two Chinese versions of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, one is Zhang Guruo's version translated in 1934, and the other is Sun Zhili's version translated in 1999, with regard to language style, literature, concept, acceptance of context, as well as the different translation strategies translators adopted in different historical, social and cultural contexts. The study also examines the special role played in the process by the two translations. The present paper thus contributes both to translation studies and to literary theory. The comparison is carried out by answering the following questions: - What are the social cultural impacts on the first translation and the retranslation? - What kind of selection tendencies do the two translators have? - What are the specific translation strategies adopted by the translators in the field of social customs, history and religion, literature and art, Bible and other allusions, literature and historical figures? Why?

Resumen: The recent boost in English translations of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), the undisputed father of religious Zionism, may be considered a revealing juncture between Israeli and American Modern Orthodox Jewish communities. Upon establishing the features of theological translation in this homeland-diaspora framework, my paper offers a discussion of a dominant translation trend of Kook’s thought in the 1990s, an ideologically motivated “export” of texts which has been largely determined by the transnational movement of people. The translators were American rabbis who emigrated and settled in Israel and the main target audience for the translations was the growing number of young American Jews making the one-year study visit in Israeli yeshivas before returning to American college life. The translations, I argue, were framed as a political polemic on the part of right-wing religious Zionism, aimed at promoting a highly nationalist, topical political interpretation of Kook’s suggestive Hebrew works among English-speaking Modern Orthodox Jews, particularly those making the increasingly popular study visit in Israeli yeshivas – visits that have been associated with the persistent “slide to the Right” of Modern Orthodox Judaism in America in recent decades.

Resumen: Hay numerosas razones que justifican un estudio académico tanto de la novela de Vladimir Nabokov (1955) como de su adaptación para el cine de Kubrick. Un motivo destacado es el interés que tienen estas obras por sí mismas, más allá de cualquier polémica morbosa, por su calidad y por sus cualidades. Lolita ya se considera una de las mejores novelas en lengua inglesa. Ambos artistas muestran cierta propensión a la provocación, ya sea conscientemente o no, pero si solo fuera ése el mérito no habrían podido emerger como colosos de la literatura y del cine. Los temas que abarca este trabajo son: el humor como elemento importante de ésta obra, y por extensión aspectos más generales del humor; y la importancia que tienen dichos aspectos en la investigación académica de la traducción, ilustrados en un puñado de ejemplos representativos.

Resumen: The main purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the English-Chinese translated financial terms of Mainland China and Hong Kong in light of the necessary criteria for special communication terminology, and explore the feasibility of standardisation. Some distinctive linguistic properties and translation methods of the two regions' Chinese financial terminology will be illustrated based on data from an industry glossary and major bank annual reports. The present situation is that Mainland China and Hong Kong display both similarities and differences in their Chinese translation of financial terms. With the increasing contact since the 1997 handover, the two regions appear to have been influencing each other, especially in that Mainland China has been adopting Hong Kong's Chinese translations. In view of the fact that some translation scholars and practitioners advocate the standardisation of Chinese financial terminology in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for the sake of better economic development, this paper outlines the main properties of the two regions' terminologies and evaluates how such standardisation might possibly proceed. Limited research has been done with regard to the translation of Chinese financial terminology and this exploratory study will fill that gap and attract similar studies in the translation and terminology fields.

Resumen: El traductor debe ser consciente de que es el lazo entre los programas y su público meta. Debe conocer a fondo a ese público (los niños, jóvenes y adultos que miran televisión con ellos) para tratar de que la experiencia sea la mejor para todos, teniendo en cuenta las distintas edades, las cosas y personas que cada grupo etario conoce, manteniendo el humor del original. Y su "saber enciclopédico" debe abarcar también a todos los grupos etarios involucrados. Se podría decir que la traducción de material audiovisual para niños y jóvenes es una traducción técnica en múltiples sentidos: no solo por las restricciones comunes a toda traducción audiovisual sino también por todo lo que hemos mencionado. Un traductor técnico sabe sobre el tema y conoce la jerga pertinente. En este caso sucede lo mismo. Y finalmente, uno de los aspectos más importantes de la tarea de traducir para niños: los traductores somos para ellos "formadores de vocabulario". Si restrinjo la riqueza de la traducción al español y elimino toda referencia cultural aunque se pueda mantener o explicar, estoy reduciendo las posibilidades de que el público meta aprenda un español más variado y conozca distintas realidades culturales. En síntesis, estaré reduciendo su vocabulario, sus conocimientos, y su mundo.

Resumen: This study uses narrative theory and the concept of narrative framing, as elaborated by Somers and Gibson (1994) and Baker (2006), to study the paratextual mediation and discursive presence of different agents in Persian translations of political texts written by Western authors about the Iran-Iraq war. By exploring the narratives dominant in the paratexts, and more specifically in the prefaces and footnotes of Persian translations, this paper examines how these have played a crucial role in reframing the narratives of Western authors through paratextual material. To this end, the narratives in the paratexts have been analyzed using four framing techniques elaborated by Somers and Gibson (1994) and Baker (2006), which are framing by temporality/spatiality, selective appropriation, labeling and participant positioning. The analysis of paratextual material shows that, apart from their introductory and explanatory functions, paratexts can be viewed as a kind of metadiscourse on the actual translations. The paper concludes that paratexts in the Persian translations are used in political and ideological ways to guide target language readers and to express the appropriate interpretations, or deemed appropriate, by the various institutional participants involved in the translation process in Iran.
