Ferner verlagern sich, bedingt durch den schnell steigenden integrationsgrad, zunbehmend die früher ganzen baugruppen oder geräten übertragenen aufgaben in das bauelement. Ein typisches beispiel hierfür stellt der einchip mikrorechner dar. Diese rasante entwicklung ist bei weitem noch nicht abgeschlossen. Neue verfahren und technologien für bauelemente mit um grössenordnungen höherer leistungsfähigkeit sind in der entwicklung, wobei ein ende, zumindest bis zum anfang des nächsten jahrhunderts, wegen der heute bereits sichtbaren anwendungsmöglichkeit neuer effekte, wie z. In dieser neufassung sind daher zukunftsträchtige tendenzen wie die ACE initiative zur vereinheitlichung der softwarearchitektur auf verschiedenen rechnertypen, die gemeinsamen anstrengungen der beiden marktführere <Apple> und <IMB>, und die mittlerweile preiswerten rechner der workstation classe (wie die Indigo von Silicon Graphics oder NeXT Rechner) aufgenommen worder.
