Resumen: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at the IXth Intemational Conference on Translation and Interpreting (September 25-27, 1995, Prague) jointly organized by the Institute of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and the Ecole de Traduction et d'Interprétation, University of Geneva. The organizers dedicated this conference to Jirí Lery (1926-1967) and Anton Popovic (1933-1984), two scholars who made important contributions to the development of translation studies in the 20th century and whose names are often mentioned in connection with two European schools of translation studies, the Polysystem Theory and the Manipulation School. Both scholars trace their heritage to the Prague Linguistic Circle, whose development in tum was significantly influenced by Ferdinand de Saussure, the linguist whose work is foreyer associated with the University of Geneva. The Prague School integrated both linguistic and literary phenomena into the wider system of social values of a particular cornmunity. Lery's objective was to isolate those factors in the translation process that affect the translator's work and to improve our understanding of how a particular method of translation potentially modifies the effect the translated text has on the reader. For him translation was a process of communication, and he can thus be considered to be an .important forel1lnner of contemporary thinking on translation. It was only after his death that the idea of a normative, prescriptive approach towards translation was replacep by a new approach that respected the translator's individuality and creativity and viewed translation as a process of cornmunication, in which the original author played as important a role as the translator. The contributions in Sections 2 and 3 focus on one or more aspects of this issue.

Resumen: The contributors to this volume on "Translation and Medicine" in the ATA ́s Scholary Monograph Series address severaal broad aspects of medical translation, from the cultural/historic framework of the language of medicine to pragmatic considerations of register of terminology. Their articles do not represent a comprehensive cross-section of the field -how could they, given the wide scope of the subjetc? Rather, they highlight some of the constributions traanslation has made to medical science and focus on certain questions raised by those who escort the advances of medicine across language and cultural barriers as well as those who are training the next generation od medical translators.

Resumen: Los textos aquí reunidos proceden en su práctica totalidad del ciclo de conferencias "Traducir poesía, Cernuda traductor" que, organizado por el Grupo de Investigación "Poesía y Traducción", en colaboración con el Vicerrectorado de Investigación de la Universidad de Almería y con ayuda de la Consejería de Educación y Ciencia de la unta de Andalucía, se celebró en la Universidad de Almería los días 2, 6 y 7 de mayo de 1996. En este volumen ( como el anterior en esta serie," Imagen de la mujer en la literatura inglesa", Universidad de Almería, 1997), sin embargo, no es una mera recopilación de actas, ya que las conferencias fueron posteriormente reelaboradas por los autores para su publicación como partes de un libro, en el que, asimismo, se incluyen algunos trabajos no presentados entonces .En aras de una mayor homogeneidad, los estudios seleccionados han sido agrupados en dos bloques temáticos, que corresponden a los dos enunciados del título 1) Traducir poesía y 2) Cernuda Traductor.

Resumen: El objetivo que se pretende cubrir con la publicación de esta obra colectiva es el siguiente: hacer una presentación extensiva de los distintos ámbitos en los que se desarrolla la actividad traductora e interpretativa dentro del ámbito médico-farmacéutico y poner sobre la mesa las cuestiones fundamentales que condicionan el desarrollo de la traducción e interpretación dentro de este ámbito del saber.
