Resumen: Una de las definiciones de traducción que mejor describen esta actividad como unión de tres rasgos fundamentales, acto de comunicación, operación. textual y actividad cognitiva, es la que ofrece Amparo Hurtado Albir (2001, 41), según la cual la traducción es «un proceso interpretativo y comunicativo consistente en la reformulación de un texto con los medios de otra lengua que se desarrolla en un contexto social y con una finalidad determinada». Esta definición de traducción responde implícitamente las tres preguntas básicas por las que debe empezar cualquier reflexión sohre la traducción (Hurtado Albir, 200 1, 28): por qué se traduce?, para qué se traduce? y para quién se traduce? Se traduce porque las lenguas y las culturas son diferentes, se traduce para comunicar y se traduce para alguien que no conoce ni la lengua en que está formulado un texto ni la cultura que envuelve a esa lengua. De las implicaciones que necesariamente se derivan de esta definición y de las respuestas a los tres interrogantes anteriores, la que de mayor interés se valora aquí es la que asume que la traducción es un acto de comunicación vinculado a un contexto sociocultural determinado con el que desarrolla una relación de influencia mutua. En palabras de M.a Carmen África Vidal Claramonte (1998, 8-9), la evolución que el pensamiento sobre la traducción ha experimentado con el «advenimiento de la aldea global» ha culminado en la actualidad con la consideración de la traducción «[...] como un acto de comunicación intercultural, un acontecimiento que desea fusionar horizontes, llegar al Otro, amarlo, [...] aun sin entenderlo».

Resumen: This paper aims to explore the norms, strategies and procedures of translating "paraphrase parallelism and chiasmus" in Arabic literary prose. The empirical base material consists of the thereepart autobiography al-Ayyam (The Days) by Taha Hussein and the narrative Hadith ́Isa ibn Hisham (' Isa ibn Hisham's Tale) by Muhamed al-Muwaylihi. As regard "paraphrase", Arabic ST and English TT are different in the way their propositions are built in terms of paraphrastic construction. A number of translation strategies signal a predominant tendency to appeal to the TL norms. Three main strategies are "compression, translation by antonymous paraphrase and textual restructuring"

Resumen: his paper argues that since in general, it is inadvisable for translation to disregard the possible unintelligibility of the text, a web of significance or signification must be reproduced irrespective of seemingly insurmountable translation difficulties. Interpretation is related to the issues of cultural translation and (un)translatability in cultural terms, necessitating a clutch of interpretative modes prior to the effective formulation of appropriate translation strategies. Temporal and cultural gaps tend to create difficulties in interpretation, and cultural pluralism may lead to multiple, hence different, interpretations. Principally because of translation, we have progressed into the age of multiculturalism, and it is not just that the necessity of acculturation seems to be diminishing, but there is a real desire to spurn it. Foreignization is a political issue. Accordingly, the tensions of ideological incommensurability need to be dissipated in order to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and communication. A degree of ideological pluralism permits cultural diversity distinctively marked by tolerance of difference and attempts to reduce an underlying distrust of the foreign. Multiculturalism, however, by no means denotes the demise of ideology. In spite of its ostensible theoretical naivety, intentionalism has some serious implications for the translator, who may ignore at his/her own peril, for instance, the complex ideological consciousness that informs not only the source text but also the resulting target text. If we say that both the author and the reader are responsible for context or its construction, then the translator must play the double role of reader and author in the sense of (re)constructing context. While we interpret with many aims, the act of interpretation is culturally and ideologically conditioned, and the ensuing complicated remapping is such that translation is always somewhat adrift

Resumen: Some translation scholars hold that Jin Di's theory of equivalent effect and Nida's theory of dynamic equivalence are essentialIy same because Jin has basicalIy adopted the definition of Nida's dynamic equivalence in formulating his own translation theory. However, this paper reveals that there are some fundamental differences between the two theories in three aspects: (1) Nida's theory is reader-oriented while Jin's is text-oriented; (2) Nida's theory is flexible while Jin's tends to be inflexible; and (3) Jin's theory is an ideal one in the sense that it cannot be realized in translation practice whereas Nida's theory is a realistic one. Examples from Jin's Chinese version of James Joyce ́s Ulysses and Bible translations are given to illustrate these differences between Nida's theory and Jin's theory. This paper further explores the two major reasons that lead to such discrepancies: (1) the deficiency of Nida's theory in dealing with transference of aesthetic elements for literary translation; (2) the influence of traditional Chinese translation theories upon Jin's translation principie. Although Nida's theory is not restricted to Bible translation, it has some limitations in guiding literary translation because it fails to address the transference of aesthetic elements for literary translation. When Jin translated Joyce's UIysses, he had to face the problem of aesthetic transference ofliterary works. This is the reason why Jin eventualIy turns to traditional Chinese translation theory and classic literary criticism to seek for support for his translation theory of equivalent effect.

Resumen: This paper reviews the criticism of J. P. Clark's Ijo-English translation The Ozidi Saga and observes that no adequate investigation has been made of this work from a linguistic angle. It notes that culture-bound concepts constitute a problematic area in Clark's translation as a result of the difference in the culture sub-systems between Ijo and English. Specifically, elements of Ijo culture, namely natural objects, marriage system and maternity, art and dance, kinship terms and the notion of God have been inconsistently and sometimes unfaithfully translated as a result of the adoption of free translation. This gives a confusing or inaccurate impression of certain Ijo cultural traits to the reader of the English texto The paper recommends that culture-bound concepts can hardly be represented adequately through free translation and proposes that such concepts should either be left untranslated as loan words into the target language or given literal or loan translations and then be paraphrased in glossaries or annotations.

Resumen: El presente Vademécum reflexiona sobre cuestiones de método y epistemología, sobre la aplicación del llamado "método científico" en la investigación empírica y experimental, discute los principales pasos a tener en cuenta en el proceso investigador y pone en evidencia la problemática que representa la aplicación de esta metodología en los estudios de traducción. Se insiste en la necesidad de desarrollar un enfoque propio de investigación empírica, un procedimiento transparente e inteligible, adecuado al muy complejo objeto de estudio del campo de la traductología.

Resumen: Jorge Luis Borges is renowned not only as one of the masters of the Spanish letters in the twentieth century, but also as a major figure in world literature. He was a prolific author, whose vast production has been the subject of many treatises and discussions that, for the most part, focus on his literary, philosophical, aesthetic and ideological preoccupations. There is, however, a crucial aspect of his work (closely related to all these concerns) that has received little scholarly attention until recent times: translation. For Borges, writing, reading and translating were intimately interconnected and the way in which he conceptualised all three acts led him to intuit and, in some cases, outline some of the principles that would become the nucleus of twentiethcentury translation theory. This paper examines Jorge Luis Borges's understanding of translation (which, for him, was an instinct, even a compulsion) with reference to theories that were developed in subsequent years. The aim is to show how Borges anticipated many of the notions that would become central to translation scholarship. In order to achieve this, links will be established between three critical essays by Borges ("Las dos maneras de traducir", "Las versiones homéricas" and "Los traductores de las 1001 Noches") and selected pieces of his fiction, on the one hand, and translation theories, on the other.
