Resumen: Film translation in China began as early as 1949 and has been developing very fast. This article aims at providing an overview of the current situation of film translation in China and explores the two major types of English-Chinese film translation: dubbing and subtitling. Therefore, it can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part constitutes a general background for the study of film translation. The author of this article first discusses film's origin and nature, the features of film language and the classification of film translation. Of the four categories of film translation (subtitling, lip-sync dubbing, narration, and free-commentary), dubbing and subtitling are the main forms used in China. Then the differences between the two types and social preference for them are analyzed. The author also presents a summary of film translation's development and current studies on this topic. The second part probes into the details of dubbing and subtitling. This article investigates the features and technical constraints of dubbing and subtitling. The main techniques adopted in practice are illustrated through specific examples. Both forms have their relative advantages and disadvantages. In subtitling, standardization and simplification are its two important techniques. Standardization is concerned with the transfer of text mode - from spoken text to written text, while simplification is related to the technical constraints in subtitling, namely spatial and temporal constraints. In dubbing, the translator should make his translation fit into the pictures and synchronize the lines and the pictures, so lip synchronization, gestures and pauses are the major constraints in dubbing. As the two main forms of film translation in China, dubbing and subtitling coexist and compete with each other in the market.

Resumen: Slogans play an important role in conveying information to targeted audiences, and the translation of slogans tends to be studied under the rubric of public-notice translation. Previous research mainly uses researchers' expertise to evaluate the quality of this type of translation. Yet, little is known about what the targeted readers think about the translation, although their opinions present key information that helps to determine whether the translation has achieved the intended effect. This paper elicits and systematically analyzes readers' responses. We investigate the case of Macao, a rapidly growing economy where the demand for English translation has markedly increased in recent decades. Public administration bodies in Macao have commissioned Chinese-to-English translation in varied areas such as tourism, social security and welfare, cultural and sports events. We sampled ten translated slogans that were used in the public sector, and administered survey questionnaires (n=130) to both source-text and target-text readers. The two groups of readers' evaluations, based on the criteria of fluency, conciseness, persuasiveness and mnemonic effect, reveal that the translations are perceived significantly less favorably than the originals are. Readers most strongly disliked word-for-word translations, and pointed out numerous problems with the translations such as ungrammaticality, inappropriate word use, lack of appeal, and unintelligibility due to insufficient background knowledge. This research demonstrates the tangible value of using readers' responses to evaluate translation quality. It also has implications for translator training, and recommends that public authorities should institute a rigorous quality assurance system.

Resumen: En el presente trabajo, se estudia el género del folleto médico en el Reino Unido y España con una doble intención. Por un lado, determinar los principales rasgos de estos textos en cada país. Por otro, comprobar si en los folletos médicos traducidos del español al inglés se efectúan las modificaciones correspondientes. Esto es, si están presentes todos los rasgos propios de la cultura meta (inglesa), así como si existe influencia por parte de la cultura origen (española). Para ello, se han compilado tres corpus lingüísticos (uno de folletos médicos originales en inglés, otro de originales en español y otro de textos traducidos al inglés) con los que se ha llevado a cabo un análisis contrastivo.

Resumen: "Traducir y escribir son ejercicios que exigen plenitud intelectual y, como tales, deben desplegar la paciencia, la claridad, la mesura del decoro, la discreción de la prudencia y, sobre todo, el amor por cada letra que es germen de la palabra. Pero, al traducir, amor denota luchar sin claudicaciones en medio de una jungla verbal con la convicción de que siempre quedará un espacio intraducible entre las dos lenguas y también significa saber -ansias insaciables de saber-, un saber vigorosamente ambicioso sobre la lengua que nos identifica para darnos con más respeto a los demás, ya que cada voz nos expresa y los expresa. Los ojos ajenos y los nuestros tienen sed de deslumbrarse ante los textos traducidos, de penetrarlos, de ser palabras en las palabras de los otros y hasta de ser pensados por las palabras de los otros. Por eso, cada línea de escritura debe ser camino de belleza, un indiscutible hecho de arte".

Resumen: The main purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the English-Chinese translated financial terms of Mainland China and Hong Kong in light of the necessary criteria for special communication terminology, and explore the feasibility of standardisation. Some distinctive linguistic properties and translation methods of the two regions' Chinese financial terminology will be illustrated based on data from an industry glossary and major bank annual reports. The present situation is that Mainland China and Hong Kong display both similarities and differences in their Chinese translation of financial terms. With the increasing contact since the 1997 handover, the two regions appear to have been influencing each other, especially in that Mainland China has been adopting Hong Kong's Chinese translations. In view of the fact that some translation scholars and practitioners advocate the standardisation of Chinese financial terminology in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for the sake of better economic development, this paper outlines the main properties of the two regions' terminologies and evaluates how such standardisation might possibly proceed. Limited research has been done with regard to the translation of Chinese financial terminology and this exploratory study will fill that gap and attract similar studies in the translation and terminology fields.
