Resumen: This paper provides a bibliometric analysis of journalistic translation research (JTR) from the past two decades. It is based on a corpus of 396 entries on journalistic translation and interpreting from the Translation Studies Bibliography (TSB) between 2000 and 2019. This study first consists of a bibliometric analysis of these entries from the aspects of author/editor, year, language, type, journal and publisher. It then explores prominent research topics and areas of focus based both on keywords provided by annotated entries in the TSB and on keywords and high-frequency nouns extracted from the abstracts as a result of corpus analysis. The study elaborates on various methodological approaches to studying journalistic translation according to the keywords provided in the entries of the TSB. The study found that: (1) most of the JTR was published by prestigious journals and publishers in English around 2010; (2) multimedia news about socio-cultural issues, published on various platforms, attracted the most attention from scholars; and (3) socio-cultural approaches have been the most prominent type of approach to journalistic translation over the past two decades. JTR research trends are also predicated according to the current development of the field.

Resumen: This study analyses the genesis of the academisation process of sworn translation and interpretation in Argentina. As early as in the mid-1860s, a study programme was developed at the University of Buenos Aires and the degree of public translator and interpreter has been granted by this institution ever since. This is a remarkable fact because even today it is the State itself that has developed different mechanisms to validate public translation and interpretation competencies and interventions in public matters, and there are scarce undergraduate programmes in higher education institutions conferring this degree. The study analyses the ancillary role of these professionals as court assistants, linked to the political sovereignty and identity of the modern states, and deals with its early academisation in Argentina. It examines the socio-politicaland historical factors that made it possible for this country to devise, deliver and award this degree, and explores what the early academisation of this profession meant for translation and interpretation, and how the degree evolved and gave birth to a particular professional ethos.

Resumen: La evaluación es un componente central de todo proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en la medida que permite orientar a los aprendices en su adquisición de la competencia traductora. Puesto que el alumnado es el centro del proceso, resulta necesario conocer sus experiencias y opiniones en torno a la evaluación en su formación universitaria como futuros traductores. Este objetivo nos ha llevado a analizar un corpus de 46 entrevistas orales a estudiantes del grado de Traducción e Interpretación de una universidad española y los planes docentes de las asignaturas de Traducción que programa la Facultad. Los resultados muestran una clara preferencia de los estudiantes por la evaluación continua y la realización de ejercicios prácticos de traducción a la vez que reclaman una retroalimentación más profunda y orientadora. También se muestran reticentes con respecto a los exámenes y sus condiciones, pero están globalmente satisfechos. Este trabajo contribuye al desarrollo de la didáctica de la traducción, con datos empíricos que permiten describir las creencias de los estudiantes y poner el foco en aquellos aspectos que resultan más necesarios para mejorar su aprendizaje.

Resumen: La citation remplit de nombreuses fonctions dans l’article scientifique. Outre sa fonction première, qui consiste à indiquer qu’une réflexion a été empruntée à un autre auteur, elle réalise au moins deux autres objectifs. Elle signale, d’une part, que l’article qui la contient entretient des rapports dialogiques avec un ensemble de textes antérieurs. De l’autre, elle cherche, en établissant des liens avec des travaux antérieurs, à augmenter la force de persuasion de l’article dans lequel elle s’insère. La citation peut, par ailleurs, avoir un autre objectif, qui est, cependant, beaucoup moins étudié. En effet, elle peut viser à rehausser l’efficacité et la précision du langage utilisé pour exprimer le contenu de l’article. La citation retrace et analyse, dans ce cas, des emplois antérieurs d’un terme souvent afin d’en préciser le sens. Ce type de citation, que nous nommons marqueur sémantique (Collet 2016, 2018), se repère, entre autres, dans les articles en sciences humaines et sociales. Notre but est de présenter les types de renseignements métalangagiers ou sémantiques qu’une telle citation est susceptible de contenir. Nous nous servirons à cette fin de données tirées d’un corpus couvrant plusieurs disciplines en sciences humaines et sociales, notamment la linguistique, la psychologie, la sociologie et l’histoire. Nous démontrerons également par une analyse quantitative que le recours aux marqueurs sémantiques est bien établi au sein des domaines susmentionnés.

Resumen: This paper investigates the use of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) as a didactic tool in primary education. Several studies confirm that subtitling and dubbing are beneficial for productive and receptive skills, vocabulary acquisition, translation competence, and learners’ motivation and engagement. However, research in the field has been devoted primarily to university students enrolled in translation and language programmes, and there is a dearth of papers exploring the use of AVT in early educational stages. This paper is intended to fill this gap by examining the perceptions of primary education students on the use of interlingual subtitling and creative dubbing in learning English at school. The sample includes 120 students from 10 public primary schools in Spain who participated in a 3-month teaching study. The research tool was a student questionnaire aimed at gathering their perceptions on the use of AVT; this survey was complemented with in-class observations. Results underline the favourable views students had on the use of AVT in language learning in primary education, with a slight preference for dubbing over subtitling. This outcome brings to the fore the educational possibilities of AVT, which may be a useful resource in language teaching.

Resumen: In this article, we report on an empirical study conducted to evaluate the utility of analytic rubric scoring (ARS) vis-à-vis comparative judgment (CJ) as two approaches to assessing spoken-language interpreting. The primary motivation behind the study is that the potential advantages of CJ may make it a promising alternative to ARS. When conducting CJ on interpreting, judges need to compare two renditions and decide which one is of higher quality. Such binary decisions are then modeled statistically to produce a scaled rank order of the renditions from “worst” to “best.” We set up an experiment in which two groups of raters/judges of varying scoring expertise applied both CJ and ARS to assess 40 samples of English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. Our analysis of quantitative data suggests that overall ARS outperformed CJ in terms of validity, reliability, practicality and acceptability. Qualitative questionnaire data helped us obtain insights into the judges’/raters’ perceived advantages and disadvantages of CJ and ARS. Based on the findings, we tried to account for CJ’s underperformance vis-à-vis ARS, focusing on the specificities of interpreting assessment. We also propose potential avenues for future research to improve our understanding of interpreting assessment.
