Resumen: The aims of a language-teaching course are often defined with reference to four "language skills": listening, speaking, reading and writing. What are the estudents expected to understund when we refer to these four skills? A selection of lexical items combined with syntactic structure? An ability to produce correct sentences? According to Widdowson, "usage" is language viewed as isolated items of grammatical structure and "use" is the language used to express ideas in meaningful communicative behaviour and to achieve some kind of communicative purpose. That is, language ia s vehicle for communication. Speaking and writing have benn said to be active or productive skills, and, listening and reading, passive or receptive skills.

Resumen: Using challenging magazine and newspaper articles for post-intermediate and advanced lenguage acquisition has always been a priority in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). Such articles enable active and vibrant professional dialogues as well as reading and writing enhancement involving research in such fields as journalese, legal and business English, among others. At this stage of a Teacher of Translator Training Course, students are expected to develop and master a multi-strand syllabus in general, with the purpose of ensuring that grammar, vocabulary, skills, functional language and pronunciation are consolidated and extended through natural and realistic contexts and are all designed in a systematic way through the course. This book is organized around discourse-oriented specialized texts to highlight varieties of English and encourage language awareness concerning style, wordplay, figures of speech, coinages and at the same time, favour learners' critical thinking skills.

Resumen: Teachers and Translators: Enhancing their Reading and Writing Skills recommends that language teachers incorporate the reading and writing connection together with the influence of L1 culture as essential elements to achieve textual competence in the target language. The use of challenging magazine and newspaper articles with post-intermediate and advanced language learners has always been a priority in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The purpose is to activate students' background knowledge, consolidate their critical thinking skills, raise their awareness in relation to varieties of English, figures of speech and coinages and, at the same time, encourage classroom research in such fields as journalese, legal and business English. Expository essay-writing is also incorporated in the course, following such patterns as the Comparison and Contrast essay and the Classification form.

Resumen: The purpose of this work is to promote ESP reading comprehension among intermediate/advanced students, to focus on top-down processing and to develop successful strategies and activities to integrate reading with writing skills. Among the most interesting chapters in this book are the ones that describe cross-disciplinary variations of the English language, namely legal, technical, business and journalistic registers together with the one entitled "Graphic Text Representations" aimed at the exploitation of visuals to aid the understanding of textual information. The author gives sufficient proof that this is achieved by incorporating graphic organizers to either introduce new data, summarize facts or even complete details not provided in the main text. The characteristics of "Time" and "Newsweek" in the chapter of "The Written Press" (Part II), are also tackled and developed in detail by the author to highlight key elements in journalese. On the whole, thanks to its modular structure, the different units of this research can also be used as optional modules in the training of translators, interpreters, curriculum designers and ESP writers since they are planned as self-contained and independent learning sequences with their own objectives. Author Graciela Bulleraich holds the degrees of PhD in Modern Languages (USAL), Sworn Translator and English Teacher (UCA). She currently teaches Language IV at the Univ. of Buenos Aires. This book is based on the research conducted for her doctoral thesis and her experience in the field of applied linguistics.

Resumen: Legal English is conservative, formal, syntactically complex and often archaic, with obscure expressions that hardly occur in the language at large. Of course, all professions have their own jargon. But, in recent times, lawyers have tried to make their profession less mysterious. With this background information and within the framework of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and a passing reference to plain English campaigns, this paper will explore the intricacies of "legalese" by analyzing several extracts (from wills, statutes...) which will help Ilústrate the technical terminology of the subject in hand. Such key features of written legal language as: manner, typography and layout, lexis and grammar, will be especially highlighted. Other text segments will also be exploited, drawn from recently published newspa-per and magazine articles, commonly read by native speakers, and, generally packed with legal terms and phrases that the layman, more often than not comes across when reading ,them. Finally, this talk will be supplemented with one or two excerpts from lively cassette material to give participants/students extra exposure to the language of the law, show them how this register functions and develop their lis-tening skills and pronunciation.

Resumen: My interest in this paper is not to lay stress on theoretical or practical innovations concerning translation studies; I simply wish to highlight the difficulties that learner-translators have in their attemps to produce adequate English discourse. I will investigate the complex realtionship between translation and language-in-text, a kind of dialectic tension which -to borrow from George Steiner- might be describes as "Word against Text".

Resumen: More often than not, advanced students are faced with the need to focus on cross-disciplinary variations of the English language, namely, technical registers, the language of advertising and even the use of the reading and listening comprehension component, illustrating English accents presented by well-known linguists. Learners are also encouraged to account for ambiguity in ESP texts and get the most out of them, including punning mistakes based on homonymy, false friends and malapropism, among others. Attention is also drawn to the study of humour in the classroom and neglected elements in foreign-language educaction which are often considered basic requirements at this stage, as well as the incorporation of such academic topics as the writing of reviews and argumentative essays. In the end, students will realize that it all comes down to interacting with the text and accessing the information they need with enthusiasm and ease.
