Resumen: El diccionario es un instrumento didáctico que no siempre se aprovecha en el aula, pues ofrece amplias posibilidades de apoyo. En el caso de las clases de lengua extranjera o materna, su uso ha sido tema de estudio entre lexicógrafos y profesores. Desde la lexicografía, el diccionario ha sido visto como una herramienta lingüística descodificadora, en cambio, para la lexicografía didáctica o de aprendizaje, es un recurso a través del cual se apoya la lectura de textos y se promueve la producción lingüística. Los estudios sobre el uso del diccionario, como los que conforman esta obra, resultan fundamentales para difundir no sólo el avance de la lexicografía de aprendizaje, sino que dan oportunidad de conocer las tendencias y orientaciones del tema. El diccionario como herramienta didáctica y el estudio del léxico para el aprendizaje, son dos aspectos que de forma transversal articulan y estructuran el contenido de este libro.

Resumen: Using challenging magazine and newspaper articles for post-intermediate and advanced lenguage acquisition has always been a priority in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). Resumen: The purpose of this work is to promote ESP reading comprehension among intermediate/advanced students, to focus on top-down processing and to develop successful strategies and activities to integrate reading with writing skills. Among the most interesting chapters in this book are the ones that describe cross-disciplinary variations of the English language, namely legal, technical, business and journalistic registers together with the one entitled "Graphic Text Representations" aimed at the exploitation of visuals to aid the understanding of textual information. The author gives sufficient proof that this is achieved by incorporating graphic organizers to either introduce new data, summarize facts or even complete details not provided in the main text. The characteristics of "Time" and "Newsweek" in the chapter of "The Written Press" (Part II), are also tackled and developed in detail by the author to highlight key elements in journalese. On the whole, thanks to its modular structure, the different units of this research can also be used as optional modules in the training of translators, interpreters, curriculum designers and ESP writers since they are planned as self-contained and independent learning sequences with their own objectives. Author Graciela Bulleraich holds the degrees of PhD in Modern Languages (USAL), Sworn Translator and English Teacher (UCA). She currently teaches Language IV at the Univ. of Buenos Aires. This book is based on the research conducted for her doctoral thesis and her experience in the field of applied linguistics.

Resumen: La globalización en el siglo XXI, por un lado crea la necesidad de locutores plurilingües, y por otro, amenaza de muerte a los llamados ecosistemas culturales, es decir a las lenguas y a las culturas de los pueblos y comunidades que no son ni los actores fundamentales, ni los principales beneficiarios de esa globalización. Inscripto en la línea de programas de revalorización del plurilingüismo, desarrollada por lingüistas y pedagogos europeos, el equipo InterRom cuyo nombre alude a la intercompresión en lenguas romances, está integrado por docentes- investigadores en español, francés, italiano y portugués de la Facultad de Lenguas de la Universidad de Córdoba. Desde 2001, los miembros del equipo han trabajado sostenidamente, movilizados por la profunda convicción de que es necesario promover, desde la Universidad y a partir de la investigación, políticas lingüísticas de estado en defensa del plurilingüísmo y de la diversidad cultural. Dado el origen latino común de las lenguas romances. un hispanohablante posee, sin ser consciente de ello, un saber previo portugués, italiano y francés aun sin haber aprendido formalmente esas lenguas. Los materiales didácticos y la propuesta de intervención diseñados parten de los siguientes presupuestos: es posible adquirir una competencia lecto-comprensiva sin que exista aprendizaje alguno de las otras habilidades- comprensión oral y escrita, es factible desarrollar estrategias intercomprensivas entre hablantes de lenguas emparentadas.

Resumen: In questi uItimi decenni, le tipologie di apprendenti, le motivazioni, i contesti di insegnamento e di uso dell'italiano come seconda lingua sono mutati ed ampliati con il progressivo accentuarsi dei movimenti migratori verso I'Italia. Oggi I'italiano è appreso ed utilizzato come L2 da più di un milione di persone residenti in Italia, senza considerare coloro che studiano questa lingua all'estero per interesse verso la cultura italiana, per motivi professionali o religiosi o ancora, nel caso dei figli o dei nipoti di emigrati italiani, per recuperare le radici linguistiche e culturali. La complessità del lavoro con una utenza estremamente eterogenea per provenienza, età cittadinanza e motivazioni, impone al docente di italiano L2 un ampliamento e una trasformazione delle proprie competenze professionali in termini di capacità progettuali, di consapevolezza delle coordinate metodologiche e di conoscenza delle tecniche glottodidattiche. Il volume raccoglie una selezione di contributi significati vi che documentano l'itinerario di formazione dell'IRRE Toscana per i docenti dei corsi di italiano L2; esso offre, accanto ad un inquadramento teorico delle problematiche dell'insegnamento e apprendimento dell 'italiano a stranieri adulti, interessanti spunti di lavoro per progettare e realizzare i corsi di lingua seconda. Per i doccnti questo lavoro può dunque costituire un manual e di base che aiuta ad esplorare i possibili sentieri da intraprendere per sviluppare competenze professionali indispensabili in contesti complessi e varicgati come i corsi di italiano L2 per apprendenti adulti.

Resumen: La recolección de información sobre la situación de la enseñanza de las lenguas extranjeras ha de ser lógicamente una tarea previa a su promoción. Este razonamiento- el balance de la situación como requisito para la acción- está marcado, no obstante, en un entorno complejo, en un mundo en el que la producción y la circulación de la información no tienen fronteras y a veces ni siquiera consideran el contexto, la fuente y el propósito de dicha información. Por otra parte, este tipo de información, que rara vez ocupa la primera plana en los medios, ha adquirido, en los últimos años una gran importancia estratégica en relación con la política educativa y social; saber quién enseña qué, dónde y cómo es un factor de sumo interés didáctico y social; saber quién enseña, ya sea a nivel local, regional, nacional o internacional. Estas dos constataciones han llevado a la Unión Latina a modelizar una encuesta que ha de permitirle entender mejor los factores dinámicos que contribuyen al desarrollo de la confianza de lenguas, o bien que frenan dicho desarrollo, a la vez que les proporcionará a los Estados miembros y a los investigadores una base de datos comparativos. Teniendo en cuenta la gran variedad de fuentes disponibles, que corresponden a contextos también variados, el modelo tiene que ser suficientemente adaptable y la actualización de los datos suficientemente flexible. Por ello, para empezar, se lo ha aplicado en primera instancia a Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay antes de ampliarlo a otros países con diferentes contextos.

Resumen: More often than not, advanced students are faced with the need to focus on cross-disciplinary variations of the English language, namely, technical registers, the language of advertising and even the use of the reading and listening comprehension component, illustrating English accents presented by well-known linguists. Learners are also encouraged to account for ambiguity in ESP texts and get the most out of them, including punning mistakes based on homonymy, false friends and malapropism, among others. Attention is also drawn to the study of humour in the classroom and neglected elements in foreign-language educaction which are often considered basic requirements at this stage, as well as the incorporation of such academic topics as the writing of reviews and argumentative essays. In the end, students will realize that it all comes down to interacting with the text and accessing the information they need with enthusiasm and ease.

Resumen: Born in Buenos Aires, María Teresa lived in the United States, where she obtained her Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU). After obtaining her Master's degree she also taught two courses, Note-taking Skills and Analyzing & Writing Arguments, at the Center for English Language Programs at HPU. María Teresa returned to her native Buenos Aires in 2006, where she taught English in public and private educational institutions at the university, high school and grade school levels. She is the founder and director of her own language center, Lingualandcenter Associated with Linguarama, mainly devoted to individual and group language training programs. She currently works as an English professor at Universidad de la Marina Mercante and conducts various teacher-training courses for translators at the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
