Resumen: In western translation theories, Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory, and are notable for their prominent disagreement on the issue. Their theories diverge in their responses to equivalence, and disagree, essentially, on the functions of translation as well as the aspects of an acceptable translation. This disagreement unfolded itself clearly during a conference at Binghamton University in 1991. In this essay, I intend to juxtapose the exceptionally different theoretical approaches of these two prominent translation scholars. I also intend to show how Venuti's views on translation in practice challenges Nida's theoretical approaches to translation, and surprisingly enough his own theories particularly speaking, foreignizing and domesticating translations in which he has been extensively engaged. Finally I intend to show how Venuti's practice of translation challenges his earlier attack on Nida's conceptions of the "dynamic equivalence," "naturalness of expression" (Nida 1964: 159) and the notion of "the equivalent effect" (de Waard & Nida 1986: 9).

Resumen: La sociolinguistica interpretativa, scienza "molle" dalla metodologia ermeneutica che si occupa della contestualizzazione sociale dell'enunciato linguistico, rappresenta un cumulo di saperi che confluiscono nell'insieme di competenze del traduttore. Ma che cosa comporta per il traduttore la consapevolezza sociolinguistica? Quali sono i concetti principali di cui egli dovrà tener conto e qual è il loro valore? Quale guadagno di conoscenze arrecano al traduttore l'impostazione e i metodi sociolinguistici? La sociolinguistica secondo Lepschy (1992: 147) si occupa di quegli aspetti dell'uso linguistico i quali sembrano richiedere una spiegazione collegata con le funzioni del linguaggio nella società e costituisce come afferma Berruto (1999: 10) un settore delle scienze del linguaggio che studia le dimensioni sociali della lingua e del comportamento linguistico, vale a dire i fatti e fenomeni linguistici in quanto essi hanno rilevanza e significato sociale. Essa ha un nucleo centrale che ha come ambiti d'applicazione lo studio della natura e delle manifestazioni della variabilità linguistica, del rapporto fra lingua e stratificazione sociale, della covarianza tra fatti linguistici e variabili sociali: un concetto centrale è quindi quello di variazione.

Resumen: Generally speaking, the message of a poem is conveyed on three levels: the semantic, the syntactic, and the phonological. How translatable each of these levels is to the translator depends on how much cognation there is between source and target language: the more cognation there is, the more translatable each of these levels. Thus, in respect of all three levels, translation between languages of the same family, such as English and French, both of which belong to the Indo-European family, is easier than translation between languages of different families, such as English and Chinese, which belong respectively to the Indo-European and the Sino-Tibetan family. If a further distinction is to be made, one may say that, in translation between Chinese and European languages, the semantic level is less challenging than both the syntactic and the phonological level, since syntactic and phonological features are language-bound, and do not lend themselves readily to translation, whereas language pairs generally have corresponding words and phrases on the semantic level to express similar ideas or to describe similar objects, events, perceptions, and feelings. As an image owes its existence largely to its semantic content, the imagery of a poem is easier to translate than its phonological features. Be that as it may, there is yet another difference: the difference between the imagery of non-dramatic poetry and the imagery of poetic drama when it comes to translation. With reference to Hamlet and its versions in Chinese and in European languages, this paper discusses this difference and the challenges which the translator has to face when translating the imagery of poetic drama from one language into another; it also shows how translating Shakespeare's imagery from English into Chinese is more formidable than translating it from English into other European languages.

Resumen: This article discusses the translator's approach to the task of translating. In an initial descriptive analysis of several German translations of an Italian novel a tendency towards linguistic simplification and over-explicitation in view of easy reading can be detected. Switching the perspective to the translator's own dynamic view of text production, the necessary expert reading and hermeneutic understanding, as well as the coordination problem of various rhetoric criteria of writing are being discussed. Based on the translator's social responsibility we may conclude that translators should be aware of the problems arising and reflect consciously on their formulation decisions regarding coherence, style and ideology.

Resumen: Cognitive understandings of metaphor have led to significant advances in understandings of how to translate metaphor. Theoretical accounts of metaphor not as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, have provided useful tools for analysis and for translation work. This has usually happened at the level of individual metaphorical expressions, while the deeper lesson of cognitive theories has not been taken to heart by translation scholars, with a few signal exceptions. In this article we explore the potential of Conceptual Metaphor Theory for translating related metaphorical expressions within a specific text. We propose a model for understanding metaphor translation that takes as its unit of analysis not the individual metaphorical expression but the conceptual metaphor, of which the metaphorical expression is but a particular instantiation. It is this theoretical grounding that will allow us to propose a model for translating developed metaphors and related metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: De todos es conocido que la historia de Tristán e Iseo produjo un notable impacto en el público medieval ya desde la aparición de los primeros textos en verso del siglo XII. Pero es indudable que a partir de la prosificación del Tristan, ene l siglo XIII, la divulgación y la popularidad de la leyenda alcanza sus mayores cotas y no sólo en el ámbito de la literatura en lengua de oil. Resumen: Este ensayo aborda la traducción desde una perspectiva crítica socio-cognitiva, entendiéndola como el lugar en el que en ocasiones se dan cita ideologías antagónicas, lo que puede llevar al conflicto o a la negociación. El papel del traductor es crucial en aquellos casos en los que el sistema de valores del hablante/escritor es origen de problemas o de incompatibilidades con la ideología del receptor. Y, sin embargo, la teoría de la traducción apenas se ha planteado qué estrategias culturales precisas pueden hacer posible la comunicación y el mutuo entendimiento entre las distintas ideologías grupales. Partiendo de ejemplos recientes tomados de los medios de comunicación relativos a conflictos y malentendidos ideológicos entre musulmanes y no musulmanes en Europa, el autor explicará varios casos en los que la traducción ha sido (o podría haber sido) utilizada como un medio necesario para gestionar el conflicto intercultural.

Resumen: This article takes under consideration a notorious problem area for Greek < > Italian and Spanish <> Greek translators, caused by the gap of standardized international academic terminology, a situation that creates incongruity: 1) between the Italian and the Greek terms and 2) between the Spanish and the Greek terms, as Greek institutional academic terms have potential Italian and Spanish equivalents with a similar core but different edges.

Resumen: The creative turn in translation studies has led to a reconsideration of translation and of the relationship between translators and writers. Many popular writers have been also translators and their works have been attentively analyzed to argue the relationship between translation and authorship. It is the case of Foscolo, well known as poet and writer and, due to his fame, also known as the translator of Sterne's Sentimental Journey. Foscolo was already an author when he translated Sterne and his difficult relationship with his new role is well documented by letters and writings. In particular Foscolo could not stand the fact of being considered not the author of his text, but just a "translator" and finally he resolved to create a new character, Didimo Chierico, which in his opinion authorized him to be mentioned as co-author. Foscolo's translation is considered a "classic" in Italy and for this reason Italian students read his translation notwithstanding the fact it is two centuries old. There are translations which manage to be considered an original literary work and as an original stand in the literary system; Foscolo's Viaggio sentimentale is a case in point. As an original, it does not suffer from aging and exerts its influence over other translations.

Resumen: Drawing on a corpus of eight translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland into five languages (German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian), the paper discusses the forms and functions of proper names in children's books and some aspects of their translation. In Alice in Wonderland, we find three basic types of proper names: names explicitly referring to the real world of author and original addressees (e.g., Alice, her cat Dinah, historical figures like William the Conqueror), names implicitly referring to the real world of author and original addressees (e.g., Elsie, Lacie and Tillie, referring to the three Liddell sisters Lorina Charlotte, Alice and Edith Mathilda), and names referring to fictitious characters. An important function of proper names in fiction is to indicate in which culture the plot is set. It will be shown that the eight translators use various strategies to deal with proper names and that these strategies entail different communicative effects for the respective audiences.

Resumen: Varios son los fenómenos que separan el italiano estándar generalmente identificado con el código escrito, del comúnmente llamado "italiano del uso medio" o neo-estándar cuya manifestación se da a nivel oral pero también escrito. Entre ellos se cuentan algunos de naturaleza sintáctica que alteran el orden canónico SVO [sujeto-verbo-objeto] en función de la distribución de lo dado y lo nuevo y en virtud de los centros de interés del hablante. En esta ponencia se parte de un trabajo de los lingüistas italianos Paola Benincà, Giampaolo Salvi y Lorenza Frison, cuyo título es "L ́ordine digle elementi della frase e le costruzioni marcate" para llegar a algunas consideraciones que pueden ser útiles a la hora de la traducción.

Resumen: Cuenta la leyenda literaria que el general Bartolomé Mitre, durante la guerra del Paraguay, dedicaba las horas vacías de los largos días sin combate a la traducción de La Divina Comedia. En una de aquellas calurosas tardes en el monte, un oficial entró en la tienda de campaña del militar y, al verlo sumergido entre diccionarios y hojas desparramadas, le dijo: -Qué anda haciendo, mi general? -Aquí me ve, traduciendo al Dante. -Hace bien, a esos gringos hay que darles con todo. Esta anécdota muestra con claridad la polifacética personalidad de Mitre, el artífice de nuestra organización nacional. A continuación se hará mención de distintos aspectos de la misma, haciendo énfasis en Mitre como traductor, su perfil quizás menos conocido.
