Resumen: Watching English Change is a ground-breaking new text, examining the ways English has changed linguistically in the twentieth century. Unlike most work dealing with on-going linguistic change, this book concentrates on the standard varietes of English. Resumen: Drawing on cognitive linguistics and psychology, this paper attempts to model the subtitler's decision-making as involving two types of operations. They are referred to as System 1 and System 2, the former being fast, automatic and requiring little effort, and the latter being slower, controlled and effortful. To test the dual-processing hypothesis, I analyse trainee subtitlers' renditions with a focus on the construction "you + to like + me" which exemplifies a cross-language asymmetry and a potential (disguised) translation challenge. Remarkably, the English construction is employed equally-conventionally to represent the concept of being favourably disposed to somebody in a non-physical/sexual manner, on the one hand, and being attracted to somebody, on the other. In Polish, however, the "prototypes" will typically be represented as distinct expressions. The present findings suggest that because differentiating between the prototypes and coding them linguistically is not challenging to the participants, it is the automation of their judgment that leads them to settle for flawed target variants (Stage 1). Additional evidence is obtained (Stage 2) as participants are induced to go from System 1 to System 2 thinking-a cross-stage comparison indicates that the fast-to-slow switch reorients the trainees' subtitling choices and ultimately improves translation quality.

Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: En este articulo hacemos un estudio comparativo de la forma solemne en el documento jurídico negocial de los ordenamientos jurídicos Common-Law y Civil-Law, en tanto que es un ingrediente del genero textual. Existe una discrepancia sustancial entre las solemnidades de esos dos mundos juridicos.Así, mediante las herramientas de la lingüística textual comparativa observamos las marcas culturales que dejan ambas culturas jurídicas y llegamos a una comparación de ellas. Para ilustrar la discrepancia entre los sistemas de solemnización anglosajón y español realizamos una comparación entre la escritura pública española y el deed (americano e ingles). Percibimos la estructura del texto y del discurso como trasunto del concepto de forma y publicidad en sendos ordenamientos jurídicos. Comparamos el Notario Público con el Notary Public. Estudiamos la forma solemne en relación con su traduccion porque consideramos constituye un supuesto de intraducibilidad. Las funciones jurídicas de la forma solemne no son coincidentes en la Common-Law y Civil-Law y se manifiestan en la traduccion de los documentos de la Common-Law al castellano, que es el supuesto paradigmatico que hemos elegido.

Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Resumen: This paper is an attempt to investigate the current problems the students graduating in English at the ISLT are likely to encounter when setting out to render English into Arabic. My teaching experience with them was beneficial, albeit quite short (one year-long only, 2000-2001). The material gathered, on the other hand, was wide-ranging and, better still, so provocative that I readily agreed to venture onto dangerous ground.[2] Studies in the past have often failed to delve deep into possible meanings and extend beyond traditional boundaries so as to assess the scope of words and explore the meaning potentials. Recent advances in the literature argue that translators should be sensitive to the losses and gains of cultural elements and assess the “weight” of these elements in the source text in order to bring about the same/similar effects. It is true that loss of meaning is inevitable and the transference to the translator’s language can only be approximate (Newmark 1988, 7). The current trend in translation theory is to explore situations to make it possible to transcend linguistic as well as cultural barriers. Translators will continue to reproduce only restricted facets of meaning so long as they do not vanquish ordinary processes of thought and approach the words in the SL text as units of discourse. I make no pretence at being able to offer definitive solutions. This account aims at identifying the potentially problematic areas in translating English into Arabic. The sense of new in this experience embodies a larger vision, apparently a different quality of recognition since the focal interest is laid on the interpretive weight of words as constituent parts of the act of communication.

Resumen: En esta obra original, que contó desde su inicio con el apoyo de la Unión Latina, Sergio Corrêa da Costa ha reunido y comentado una colección de dieciséis mil ejemplos de usos de lo que él llama las "palabras sin fronteras", es decir, aquellos vocablos que han sobrepasado las fronteras de los países en que nacieron y se han convertido en portadoras de una especie de denominación de origen. Estas palabras, que pueden designar tanto nociones abstractas o funciones, como objetos usuales o indicaciones de la mayor trivialidad, se dispersan un poco por todas partes y acaban por constituir una especie de "vocabulario sin fronteras" que crece sin cesar y acerca a las distintas culturas. "Es un libro de lingüística, cuyo autor no es un lingüista, sino más bien un humanista". El autor se ha interesado únicamente en las palabras trasladadas de una lengua a otras, ya sea conservándola intacta, ya sea con modificaciones formales poco importantes. Para no convertir en demasiado técnica la presentación tipográfica de los ejemplos de uso de estos préstamos lingüísticos, las distintas variantes existentes en ciertos países van a continuación de las palabras y expresiones, detrás de una barra diagonal, sin otra distinción cualitativa.

Resumen: En el 2004 la Universidad de Deusto reedito, en edición facsímil, "La Gramática Latina" que publicó Santiago Segura Munguía en el año 1961. El presente "Método de Latín" viene a completar dicha obra ya que constituye su libro de ejercicios, en cada uno de tales ejercicios se indica el número del párrafo de "La Gramática Latina" en el que se explica el mismo tema.
