Resumen: Translation shifts are among the disciplines that have always been in focus. Many scholars have discussed in this regard and have proposed some models. Three main types of shifts have been paid attention to including syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts. First models like the ones introduced by Catford and Vinay and Darbelnet mostly had tendency toward syntactic shifts. On the contrary, the later frameworks have studied semantic and stylistic shifts. Undoubtedly, Van Leuven-Zwart's framework that studies syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts all together has been one of the most detailed ones. It has been presented to establish and describe shifts in translations of narrative texts. However, some scholars including Toury have not paid attention to this model in shift studies because of its complexities.pThis paper aims at briefly introducing Van Leuven-Zwart's framework and speaking about its strengths and drawbacks, respectively, in order that researchers and students get more familiar with this influential model. It also gives some suggestions for further researches.

Resumen: El ataque con gas sarín que se produjo en el metro de Tokio en marzo de 1995 se cobró doce vidas, además, miles de personas resultaron heridas y muchas otras sufrieron sus consecuencias y secuelas. Hondamente afectado, el novelista Haruki Murakami entrevista a las víctimas, a los que vivieron y sufrieron en su propia carne el atentado, para establecer con precisión qué ocurrió ese día en las distintas líneas de metro afectadas y cómo lo vivieron. También desentraña la verdadera historia que se ocultaba tras aquel acto terrorista que convirtió una anodina mañana de lunes en una tragedia nacional. Y, sobre todo, intenta responder a algunas preguntas primordiales: ¿por qué? ¿Por qué en ese momento y lugar concretos?, ¿qué nos dice de la psicología japonesa el comportamiento de todos los implicados? Como contrapunto, Murakami nos ofrece los testimonios de algunos miembros y ex miembros de la secta para desentrañar los motivos que condujeron a aquel atentado.

Resumen: This paper explores the translation procedures used by english translators when they tackle chinese empty words. To begin with an empty words list produced by Wang (1999) was adopted as the reference. Following this, suitable translations in the first sicty three issues of renditions were collectes and their corresponding source texts obtained from either the internet of libraries. Eventually, sixty two englisch texts and sicty two of their source texts were compiled into a parallel corpus on ParaConc.Afterwards, examples extracted from this corpus were analysed and classfied into different procedure categories on the basis of former scholars' definitions and my own ideas. Finally, eight translation procedures were identified, they are: match, paraphrase, shared match, implicitation, amplification, grammatical vonveyance, borrowing adn omission.

Resumen: This article provides evidence for the applicability of free translation to legal texts, based on an examination of actual cases of Japanese-to-English translation of agreements and contracts in which problems arise from literal translation. The data analysis shows that pitfalls associated with literal translation are attributable to not only the difficulty of finding terminological equivalents that inevitably arises from the differences in the Japanese and American legal and cultural systems, but also to the importance of preserving the spirit of mutual trust and cooperation that is found in Japanese business transactions. It is also postulated that general linguistic and interpretive problems inherent in Japanese-to-English translation of nontechnical texts, including redundancy, ambiguity, propensity for nonspecific statements, and the lack of linguistic clues (e.g., indicators of number), have fundamental, but not well understood, implications for legal translation. The conclusions indicate the need for an integrated approach to legal translation practice that uses both literal and free translations, taking into full account the linguistic, cultural, and legal factors at work in the translation process.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: This article considers challenges faced by literary translators at the level of discourse, specifically dealing with problems in translating transitivity from English into Chinese. In principle transitivity analysis of a ST and one or more TTs can be used to evaluate several different aspects of the TTs' capturing of the ST's style with regard to the representing of processes, actors and circumstances. Transitivity is found to usefully reveal style, mind style, and the dynamics of narrative (Who does what to whom, how, where, etc.), and to relay notions of power, responsibility, and control. Adhering to these disciplines requires a certain rigour from translators. A comparative analysis of James Joyce's Two Gallants and its two Chinese translations demonstrates that translators tend to restore estranged transitive models - such as agent metonyms - into something familiar, which distorts the author's intention. The article focuses on the linguistic differences which impinge upon translators' selections, and proposes creative translation in order to pursue the cognitive gain, which sits at the heart of literariness.

Este primer volumen, que cuenta con trece aportaciones, supone, por un lado, un acercamiento a problemas teóricos o metateóricos de la traducción, en un diálogo con pioneros de la Traductología, como Eugene A. Nida, pero también en el planteamiento de los nuevos retos a los que, como teóricos del lenguaje, de la cultura o de la traducción, nos enfrentamos a día de hoy. Por un lado, el paradigma tecnológico, por el otro las peculiaridades de la traducción desde una perspectiva cultural, en una posición intermedia, el diálogo entre culturas y civilizaciones en la comprensión de la "cultura". Por último, se ponen frente a frente dos percepciones de la cultura, la occidental y la oriental, aunque haya quien, como Pedro San Ginés, nieguen esta dicotomía. La emergencia de algunas lenguas asiáticas, como el chino, con sus peculiaridades lingüísticas y culturales nos hace reflexionar sobre los presupuestos "occidentales" en los que nos movemos, en muchos casos, un gran número de expertos. No podemos olvidar el etnocentrismo o el eurocentrismo y no siempre nos resulta fácil trasladar las categorías de un universo conceptual (oriental) a otro universo conceptual como el occidental. Se impone a este respecto, dejar hablar a los expertos de uno y otro lado, lo que, de alguna forma aparece reflejado aquí, con contribuciones que se acercan más al universo occidental (partes 1 y 2 de este volumen) y otras que tratan de hacer una comprensión del universo oriental desde un punto de vista teórico, metateórico y/o aplicado".
