Resumen: En la traducción jurídica, el hallazgo de equivalencias léxicas es una de las aspiraciones que obsesiona al traductor. Cualquiera sea el género al que pertenezca el texto fuente, la búsqueda de equivalentes entre unidades terminológicas que designen conceptos idénticos o semejantes es una de las prioridades aprendidas y enseñadas como tales en el trabajo sobre el plano léxico del texto meta. Las estrategias traductoras de la explicación, la expansión o la explicitación, e incluso el uso de glosas en el cuerpo de la traducción o de notas al pie, son, a menudo, recursos más idóneos que la sustitución por equivalencia cultural o funcional en el trasvase de términos jurídicos. Cuando la equivalencia léxica es solo aparente, esas estrategias devienen imprescindibles para evitar traducciones incorrectas, incompletas o ambiguas.

Resumen: En los últimos años, hemos sido testigos del reconocimiento del videojuego como un elemento propio de la industria cultural en diversos países. No cabe duda de que no es solo un formato de ocio que genera una gran cantidad de puestos de trabajo, contenido e ingresos en el sector audiovisual; la calidad de sus guiones e historias, la diversidad de géneros y experiencias de usuario, el crecimiento de una "audiencia-comunidad" y la introducción de tecnologías como la realidad virtual no pueden dejarnos indiferentes. Como lingüistas, es de gran interés conocer las nuevas tendencias de un sector que ha cambiado la forma de emitir y consumir comunicación. Para ello, hablaremos de los profesionales y la audiencia del sector de los videojuegos que, debido a sus nuevas competencias, se alejan de la sociolingüística tradicional y elaboran un lenguaje propio, vivo y en constante cambio; de los nuevos formatos resultado de la innovación tecnológica, con sus ventajas y sus restricciones; y de cómo estos productos audiovisuales han creado una cultura de masas de la que surgen nuevos productos en papel, digitales y audiovisuales relacionados (transmedia), servicios (programas de televisión o canales de vídeo en Internet), hardware y periféricos, eventos y publicaciones (profesionales y académicas).

Resumen: Translation S- and T-universals have been widely discussed in Translation Studies and their psycholinguistic study has been among the priority topics today. The article is focused on the study of translation 'S- universals' (Chesterman 2004) and is based both on the psycholinguistic model of literary translation, which combines today's neuroscience theories of cognitivism and connectionism, and on the experimental data that demonstrate its validity. The model is resulted in a series of experiments held with undergraduate students of translation department. The results of the study proved the idea of existing specific procedural and discursive S-universals in literary translation. As the empirical data showed, these universals maintain the status of common strategies depending on translator's cognitive style (analytical or synthetic) and his dominant channel (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) of source text perception.

This means that foreign-born interpreters and translators may be eligible for H-1B Specialty Worker Visas, Green Cards with and without sponsors, or Special Immigrant Visas.

Resumen: The aim of this study is to investigate translators' behaviors in translating fantasy fiction in Taiwan, with the help of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological model. The application of a sociological approach to translation studies allows an examination of the social and cultural nature of translation by locating this activity within a particular social structure. The investigation was conducted by employing a parallel corpus study of fantasy fiction translations: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone and Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. Translators' textual behaviors when dealing with culture-specific items (CSIs) were analyzed. The results revealed a source-oriented tendency when translating CSIs. The evidence from the textual analysis was interpreted and discussed in terms of the interactions between the translators' collective habitus and the social determinants in the literary field in Taiwan.

Resumen: Drawing on cognitive linguistics and psychology, this paper attempts to model the subtitler's decision-making as involving two types of operations. They are referred to as System 1 and System 2, the former being fast, automatic and requiring little effort, and the latter being slower, controlled and effortful. To test the dual-processing hypothesis, I analyse trainee subtitlers' renditions with a focus on the construction "you + to like + me" which exemplifies a cross-language asymmetry and a potential (disguised) translation challenge. Remarkably, the English construction is employed equally-conventionally to represent the concept of being favourably disposed to somebody in a non-physical/sexual manner, on the one hand, and being attracted to somebody, on the other. In Polish, however, the "prototypes" will typically be represented as distinct expressions. The present findings suggest that because differentiating between the prototypes and coding them linguistically is not challenging to the participants, it is the automation of their judgment that leads them to settle for flawed target variants (Stage 1). Additional evidence is obtained (Stage 2) as participants are induced to go from System 1 to System 2 thinking-a cross-stage comparison indicates that the fast-to-slow switch reorients the trainees' subtitling choices and ultimately improves translation quality.

Resumen: With rich connotations and marked features, the translation theory of "Political Equivalence" has great significance in directing the standards, procedures and specific methods for diplomatic language translation. As a special form of discourse, diplomatic language is closely related to foreign policies and state interests, and has strong political inclination, thus inevitably concerning political issues. This paper, under the theoretical guidance of "Political Equivalence", advances the strategies for translating the Chinese diplomatic neologism Buzheteng used by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the conference celebrating the 30th anniversary of the reform and opening policy. Its purpose is to analyze the literal meaning, political context and connotations of the localism Buzheteng, and to conduct an analytical contrast of different translations. It also aims to provide a critical evaluation of the "Zero Translation" theory proposed by Zhu Chunshen and Zhang Junfeng from the City University of Hong Kong. The translation of Buzheteng illustrates that the "Political Equivalence" theory is one of the major criteria and principles gauging the translation of diplomatic languages.

It starts with a discussion about the great amount of confusion that exists in the usage of terminologies related to the area of translation quality assessment and tries to disambiguate and (re)define key terms that are often taken for granted such as translation, assessment, and quality. The article then deals with developing a theoretical model to explain different stages of the process of translation quality assessment, i.e., collection, synthesis, and interpretation of data with an emphasis on the significance of the role of assessors in the process.

Resumen: While scholars may still argue for years to come on the concepts of good and bad quality of translation, the translation and localization industry developed tools for quantitative assessment of the quality of translation of technical text involving the relatively simple method of tracking and evaluating errors - all based on the assumption that a good translation is the one without errors. One of the goals of linguistic education is to prepare students for different careers they might take up, which might include a technical translator position. To achieve these goals students must learn not only languages, but also at least basics of the trade they might wish to develop. Since knowledge of QA methodology and criteria used in the translation assessment procedures is an important factor of individual translator success, I believe that they should be presented as a part of the future translators curricula, together with tools and methods for verifying and improving the technical translation quality.

Resumen: Everybody wants their translation to be top quality, and subconsciously we all "know it when we see it", but what does it actually mean? How do you define the quality of a translation? In this presentation I will show some theories on what constitutes "good" translation and how to assess the quality (without going too far into academic debates). But theories aside, there are established, widely used models of the translation quality assessment used in the technical translations industry, such as LISA, J2450 or TAUS error typology. I will show the basis of these models and how they are used in the everyday functioning of thousands of translation agencies across the world. I will also discuss the tools available for translators and translation agencies for quality assurance, both stand-alone and incorporated into translation environments or CAT tools, comparing included checks, error-resolving procedures and customizability. Tools for quality assessment will be discussed too.

Resumen: When we feel overconfident and think that we don't need to change anything about the way we work, we tend to underestimate change. In the spring of 2015, my professional life took a new direction following a session I attended at the biennial conference organized by the Institute of Translation and Interpreting in the U.K. Dubbed the "Doomsday Presentation," the session focused on the future of our industry and on the changes that are happening all around us. The speaker's message was clear: we need to change because the world is changing.

Resumen: This paper examines the translation of economic texts authored by Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman, published originally by The New York Times in both their printed and Internet editions, and in Spanish by El País. It comprises a small parallel corpus of eighteen original columns and their equivalent Spanish versions, a total of 31,196 words. The article will consider the translation of stable sources (Hernández Guerrero 2009) within the narrative of the economic recession that started in early 2010s. It will use Nord's functional model (2005) to analyse the texts. The objectives of the study are: (1) to establish whether translators opt for instrumental or documentary translation, and (2) to consider whether stable sources such as the opinion columns written by prominent figures can be regarded as closed sources that do not accept major shifts during the translational process. I will look at extratextual factors such as time, space and motivation, as well as intratextual features such as linking devices, thematic organization, markers of text composition and lexis. In the final section, I will attempt to provide an interpretation from the perspective of communication studies, which might inform translation research as well. For the discussion I will draw on Castells' proposal for the study of media discourse and its connection with the political power (2009).

Resumen: Cognitive understandings of metaphor have led to significant advances in understandings of how to translate metaphor. Theoretical accounts of metaphor not as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, have provided useful tools for analysis and for translation work. This has usually happened at the level of individual metaphorical expressions, while the deeper lesson of cognitive theories has not been taken to heart by translation scholars, with a few signal exceptions. In this article we explore the potential of Conceptual Metaphor Theory for translating related metaphorical expressions within a specific text. We propose a model for understanding metaphor translation that takes as its unit of analysis not the individual metaphorical expression but the conceptual metaphor, of which the metaphorical expression is but a particular instantiation. It is this theoretical grounding that will allow us to propose a model for translating developed metaphors and related metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: Las tendencias pedagógicas actuales muestran un creciente interés de los especialistas en educación en alejarse cada vez más de los modelos puramente instructivos, para centrarse en el estudio y comprensión del propio proceso de aprendizaje. La idea detrás de este movimiento es bien clara: cualquier intento por perfeccionar la enseñanza en aras de lograr mayor efectividad en la misma, tiene que transitar irremediablemente por una mejor y exhaustiva comprensión del aprendizaje en sí mismo. Los distintos modelos y teorías existentes sobre estilos de aprendizaje ofrecen un marco conceptual que permite un mayor entendimiento de los comportamientos diarios en la clase de traducción, la forma en que aprenden los alumnos y las alternativas que les pueden resultar más eficaces.

Resumen: Se analiza el modo en que trabajan los traductores en el momento en que estalla una conflagración bélica, haciéndose especial referencia a los traductores, tanto civiles como militares, que trabajaron con el Ejército de Defensa de Israel en el transcurso de la denominada Guerra de los Seis Días, en junio de 1967. Las conclusiones que de este trabajo se extrajeran son aplicables a cualesquiera otros conflictos bélicos en cualquier parte del mundo y en cualquier momento histórico.
