Resumen: Conference papers rarely make good reading. Written to be read aloud, they fall somewhere between the speech, which is hortatory and calculated to persuade, and the essay, which is discursive and was rudely defined to by Dr Johnson as "an irregular indigested piece". Except, perhaps, papers presented at meetings on the exact sciences, once in print they are rarely heard of again. This collection of papers on translation has some chance of meeting a better fate. One difference between it and other books on the subject known to me is the emotion stirred in the reader by so many of its contributors.

Resumen: El objetivo principal de este diccionario es brindar equivalentes precisos para los términos que se emplean en la psicología y la psiquiatría: síndromes, diagnósticos, tratamientos, aspectos legales y éticos, estadísticas, investigación, etc. Tiene más de 60.000 entradas y no hay reglas especiales para su uso. El usuario sencillamente localiza el vocablo deseado y lee el equivalente. Ningún término refiere a otro para obtener la transliteración. Con frecuencia, en inglés exiten formas diversas de deletrear algunas palabras; estas variaciones se presentan como entradas separadas [p.ej., atactic y ataxic]. Para las expresiones idiomáticas se suministran equivalentes conceptuales. El autor evita utilizar equivalentes que sólo se usen en zonas geográficas limitadas, ya que la inclusión de esos regionalismos aumetaría considerablemente las dimensiones del Diccionario, pero no resultaría de utilidad para la mayoría de los usuarios. No se incluyen abreviaturas y siglas porque, según se explica en el prólogo, "determinadas secuencias de letras pueden tener significados diversos en diferentes idiomas, y sus equivalentes servirían esencialemtne para confundir". Por ello, la voz de entrada se encuentra sin abreviar. Por ejemplo, el Diccionario no incluye ICT, sino insulin-coma therapy. Tampoco aparecen nombres de marcas, sino la denominación de la mayoría de las sustancias químicas importantes. Algunas palabras [p.ej., articulate] tienen más de una función gramatical. En este caso, para mayor claridad, cada forma de uso de ofrece como entrada separada, con la función gramatical identificada por una de las siguientes abreviaturas: [adj.] adjetivo; [n.] nombre; [v.] verbo.

Resumen: Editor's Notes: Translators may be surprised to learn that the idea of using machines to facilitate the translation task has been around for a very long time. Already more than half a century ago inventors were at work on machines that would effect the transfer from one language to another.l In as early as 1933 a patent was granted in France to Georges Artsruni for his "mechanical brain" that could replace words or combinations of words with equivalents retrieved from a target dic~ tionary. Also, in that same year, P.P. Trojanskij, working in the USSR, proposed a complete translation process that would be largely automatic. Words were to be entered in a source dictionary together with "logical analysis marks" and then paired with their equivalents in a target dictionary, which also had their associated marks. An input text, matched word for word against the source dictionary, would undergo analysis and, based on the information from the analysis marks, be converted into logical formo An automated lookup would then retrieve, for the elements in logical form, tl¡eir corresponding equivalents in the target dictionary, and the grammatical forms would be generated automatically, based on the marks assigned to each entry. T rojanskij envisioned that human beings would be needed at the front end, to supply the words and the logical marks for the dictionary, and at the output end, to modify the text so that it would have the characteris~ tics of natural language. Trojanskij's model is in fact a clear and accurate description of machine translation (MT) as we know it today. The process was not to become a reality, however, until computer science itself caught up with his vision.

Resumen: Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by the siblings Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, intended "for the use of young persons" while retaining as much Shakespearean language as possible. Mary Lamb was responsible for retelling the comedies and Charles the tragedies. They omitted the more complex historical tales, including all Roman plays, and modified those they chose to retell in a manner sensitive to the needs of young children, but without resorting to actual censoring. However, subplots and sexual references were removed.

In the end, Paul finds the resolution to reject his background for good; knowing he must forget both Miriam and Clara, he sets out with renewed resolution on a quest for a life of his own. Unique for its sexual frankness and working-class background, Sons and Lovers is Lawrence's first major achievement, and a groundbreaking step forward in the history of English realistic fiction.
