In Eduardo Mallea, Argentina found the spokesman for its deepest and most genuine values and beliefs. History of an argentine Passion, the best of his many volumes of essays, was published in 1937 and predates all of his novels. The work is especially important because Mallea treated many of its existential themes in subsequent works of fiction. It is both the autor's spriritual autobiography and Argentina's national biography. Mallea's stance is that of a liberal thinker who sees the Argentina of the 1930s dominated by repressive forces tht have betrayed the fundamental ideals on which the nation was built. Myron I.Lichtblau is professor of Hispanic American Literatura at Syracuse University and associate chairman of spanish.
