Resumen: L’article vise à présenter les différentes modifications qui pourraient être introduites dans la version polonaise du Vocabulaire européen des philosophies (VEP) sous la rédaction de Cassin. Le texte aborde le thème des intraduisibles philosophiques polonais qui pourraient faire l’objet de nouvelles entrées dans le VEP, tels que czyn, et le lexique polonais qui pourrait accompagner les entrées existantes. On commente aussi la spécificité de la langue polonaise comme langue philosophique dans le contexte des entrées du VEP consacrées aux langues. Le polonais philosophique est abordé dans une perspective historique, ce qui permet d’en montrer la création lexicale originale, présente surtout à l’époque du romantisme, ainsi que l’histoire des traductions philosophiques en langue polonaise. On commente plusieurs problèmes de traduction qui ont eu un impact sur le vocabulaire philosophique polonais et qui posent toujours des problèmes aux traducteurs et aux commentateurs des philosophies étrangères. Certains mots commentés, comme liberalism ou šaria, sont présentés dans leur contexte politique actuel. Toutes les questions sont considérées dans une perspective pratique de mise en oeuvre du projet et la dernière partie est consacrée aux changements éditoriaux concrets qui devraient être pris en compte par les traducteurs polonais.

Resumen: Motivations for volunteering have rarely been studied in the context of professional literary translators. Instead, studies have mainly focused on amateur translators in areas such as charities, fansubbing, TED, Wikipedia, Skype and Facebook. This paper explores this under-researched topic in the context of ¡Hjckrrh!, a non-profit publisher led by translators who self-publish literary translations in e-book format. As of March 2018, ¡Hjckrrh! had issued 21 e-books translated from seven languages, with the collaboration of fourteen translators. Most of the translators are experienced professional translators with full-time jobs. Based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with fifteen participants, this paper explores the translators’ motivations for collaborating on this initiative and shows how an ethnography-inspired methodology can be fruitful when studying translators. The outcomes reflect that translating for pleasure and personal relationships are factors that trigger translators’ voluntary participation in ¡Hjckrrh!, and the conclusions highlight the need for more research into similar non-profit publishing initiatives.

Resumen: Dans cet article, nous nous pencherons sur la production et la réception dans l’Amérique du Nord anglophone des traductions anglaises des romans canadiens-français publiés au xixe siècle. Les romans à l’étude étaient L’Influence d’un livre (1837), Les Anciens Canadiens (1863), Angéline de Montbrun (1884) et À l’oeuvre et à l’épreuve (1891). Dans un premier temps, nous examinons donc les concepts théoriques de distribution, de diffusion, de réception et de réception critique. Puis, dans un deuxième temps, nous présenterons brièvement les résultats de nos recherches en analysant les parcours de réceptions des traductions anglophones des romans de notre corpus. Nous démontrerons que certaines oeuvres ont profité d’une réception enviable – et sont toujours reconnues de nos jours – alors que d’autres sont presque passées inaperçues.

Resumen: La presse ancienne canadienne est un témoin privilégié des changements politiques et sociaux survenus pendant le xixe siècle au Canada. Dans cette presse, la traduction occupe une place importante, puisque les journaux publiés à l’étranger et en langue étrangère sont la principale source d’information des rédacteurs de l’époque. L’un des premiers périodiques publiés à Montréal (1826-1899), La Minerve, revêt une importance particulière car il est publié tout au long du xixe siècle. Ce périodique fait d’ailleurs l’objet d’une activité traductionnelle intense. L’étude de la traduction dans La Minerve permet d’observer le « rapport d’inégalité politique » (Simon 1989 : 19) entre le Canada anglais et le Canada français. Les exemples cités démontrent que la traduction dans La Minerve est employée en tant qu’instrument de défense du peuple canadien francophone, entouré d’anglophones.

Resumen: Este artículo aborda la retraducción de la obra literaria desde una doble perspectiva: por una parte, se establecen unos principios teóricos (Pym 1998 y Venuti 2004/2012), que explican algunas razones de las frecuentes apariciones de retraducciones de obras clásicas. Por otra parte, y con el fin de ilustrar estos principios, se examina el recorrido que han tenido las retraducciones de la obra de Edgar A. Poe en España desde la aparición de la primera traducción (1858) hasta la actualidad. Por último, y con el objetivo de ayudar a entender mejor tanto los presupuestos teóricos como las retraducciones encontradas, se analizan varios aspectos de tres retraducciones aparecidas en diferentes épocas del cuento «The Business Man» de Poe (1840): la de Julio Gómez de la Serna (1951), la de Julio Cortázar (1956/1970) y la del autor de este artículo (2008). El análisis de algunos aspectos diferenciadores de estas tres traducciones permite concluir con el importante papel que desempeñan las retraducciones en la canonización de autores literarios en los diferentes sistemas de llegada planteados.

Resumen: This study proposes an empirical methodology to test the hypothesis that translation from Spanish into English results in reduced abstractness. The semantic area focused upon is the attribution of properties to specific entities by means of abstract nouns. Two levels of abstractness, conceptual and grammatical, are considered. Conceptual abstractness is linked to the referential content of the nouns, while grammatical abstractness involves the reified expression of properties as nouns, as opposed to other word classes. The study classifies the translation correspondences for nouns ending in the suffix -idad in the Spanish novels by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (1939-2003) Los mares del Sur and Tatuaje. Such property-denoting nouns contribute to the construal of point of view. The methodology combines a quantitative approach with a qualitative, text-analytic selection of relevant items. Results indicate that abstractness is mainly reduced on the grammatical level although instances of diminished conceptual abstractness can also be observed. Compliance with language preferences may be aligning with readability norms affecting the target product, crime fiction, to undo reification of properties (namely explicitation and simplification). The results underscore the need to include semantic parameters in studies of translation tendencies. A few studies on song translation can be identified, such as Low’s (2003; 2005) Pentathlon Approach and Franzon’s (2005) functional approach. These models of translation offer valuable guidelines on how to treat the lyrics, but what is missing is a systematic and multimodal model of analysis that can be applied to the song in its entirety. Kaindl (2005; 2013) takes into consideration the multimodality of songs, but only focuses on popular music and opera. Acknowledging the lack of substantial research on the interaction between modes, which is typical of stage musicals, this paper focuses on the development of a model of analysis that considers the semiotic complexity of songs. A new approach based on themes will allow for a more holistic view of the song and of its content.

Resumen: Meta : journal des traducteurs / Meta: Translators’ Journal est une revue savante internationale qui publie des articles de recherche en traduction, en terminologie et en interprétation. La revue publie deux numéros réguliers et un numéro spécial par volume, à raison de dix à douze articles par numéro. Trois langues sont acceptées, soit le français, l’anglais et l’espagnol. Dans certains numéros spéciaux consacrés à des langues-cultures particulières, d’autres langues, telles que l’allemand et le turc, ont également déjà été acceptées. Meta s’adresse plus particulièrement aux chercheurs, mais aussi à tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux phénomènes langagiers mis en jeu dans la communication interculturelle.

Resumen: The recent boost in English translations of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), the undisputed father of religious Zionism, may be considered a revealing juncture between Israeli and American Modern Orthodox Jewish communities. Upon establishing the features of theological translation in this homeland-diaspora framework, my paper offers a discussion of a dominant translation trend of Kook’s thought in the 1990s, an ideologically motivated “export” of texts which has been largely determined by the transnational movement of people. The translators were American rabbis who emigrated and settled in Israel and the main target audience for the translations was the growing number of young American Jews making the one-year study visit in Israeli yeshivas before returning to American college life. The translations, I argue, were framed as a political polemic on the part of right-wing religious Zionism, aimed at promoting a highly nationalist, topical political interpretation of Kook’s suggestive Hebrew works among English-speaking Modern Orthodox Jews, particularly those making the increasingly popular study visit in Israeli yeshivas – visits that have been associated with the persistent “slide to the Right” of Modern Orthodox Judaism in America in recent decades.

Resumen: En este artículo se presentan los resultados obtenidos en un estudio piloto que ha constituido la primera etapa de un estudio experimental sobre la adquisición de la competencia traductora en la formación de traductores del japonés al español. Se enmarca en la investigación sobre la adquisición de la competencia traductora del grupo PACTE, de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. En el estudio piloto participaron cinco estudiantes de cuarto del Grado en Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Salamanca con el japonés como segunda lengua extranjera. Los objetivos del estudio fueron 1) avanzar en la selección de las variables de estudio y de sus correspondientes indicadores; 2) comprobar que eran adecuados los instrumentos (texto y cuestionarios); 3) verificar que era adecuada la selección de puntos ricos (problemas prototípicos de traducción), y 4) avanzar en los criterios de corrección de dichos puntos ricos. Los resultados demostraron que eran adecuados el texto escogido, la selección de puntos ricos (si bien se eliminaron dos puntos ricos y se añadió uno nuevo), las variables e indicadores seleccionados (solo se eliminó uno de los indicadores) y los cuestionarios (que solo se modificaron ligeramente).

Resumen: Source text (ST), although a central concept in translation studies, has remained vaguely defined. This complicates the identification of a translation’s ST, which in turn creates problems for research. Associating translations with the incorrect ST(s) leads to questionable conclusions and categorizations, especially when dealing with the types of translation that are defined and theorized with reference to their relationship with their ST(s), such as retranslation, indirect translation, pseudotranslation and self-translation. Our case study of five Finnish translations of Jules Verne’s Vingt mille lieues sous les mer demonstrates that these assumed retranslations have different STs. We adopt the notions of work and text to establish the relationships among the translations and STs involved: texts are representations of a work, and a work, in turn, is a literary creation implied by its various texts. Although the five Finnish translations have different source texts, they are all – as are their STs – texts of the same work. In other words, if source text is understood to be a text, the five translations are not, strictly speaking, retranslations; however, if source text is understood to be a work, then they are all retranslations of the same work. Therefore, the categorization of these translations – and thus also the points of view from which they can be studied – depends on whether source text is defined as a text or as a work.
