Resumen: This study describes the deployment of a modified form of Mediawiki in translation pedagogy. The study is based on experimentarion at the University of Macau and examines a framework for using wiki as a pedagogical tool for translator training. It looks at Wiki as a platform enabling student-centred collaborative learning, drawing from the social constructivist theory. Three user surveys collected at the end of each year shed light on the way the system was received and possible problem areas. They indicate that the system was received favorably, though concerns regarding speed and coordination of discussions remain.

Resumen: Community interpreters tend to receive less training than interpreters in other fields. When they are trained, it is in interpreting techniques, but perhaps translation theory is what they really need to learn. Resumen: Skeletons were unearthed recently in a medieval town in Bohemia, with evidence pointing to a ritual vampire burial. The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation planned a coproduction of this find with the Smithsonian and the History Channel. After shooting began, the producers decided to film key scenes in English and German instead of dubbing them. Translations were done on the fly while the crew waited to shoot. This presentation will discuss the rare case of a contemporary film shot in two languages on location and the difficulties encountered. The movie won a Cine Golden Eagle Award fror historical documentaries in the USA.

Resumen: In the translating some financial/economic and political oriented documents from Chinese into English, we find that besides tackling the difficulties in the language aspect, we, have to deal with concepts that may be totally alien to each other, rules and regulations and systems that may be non-existent or entirely different in the other country and culture. We would like to take up the issues and problems that crop up in our translation of Chinese housing lease and politically oriented news articles as case studies and discuss with the audience how we should deal with such difficulties and solve them so as to turn out a translation that is understandable and acceptable to both concerned parties. To us, any translation task is a learning process to enrich our knowledge and experience in our translation career.

Resumen: Today, the translator himself/herself has become the focus of the translation study. The translator and writer Pearl S. Buck was called "a bridge between the civilization of the East and West" by President Nixon. However, her translation of the Chinese clasical novel Shuihuzhua, under the title "All Men Are Brothers" has been criticized as too literal and inaccurate. This paper is intended to defend her translation with both quantitative and qualitative analysis, both library study and field work.

Resumen: This contribution aims at analyzing creative processes with respect to translation. The fact of acknowledging that the translation process is inevitably influenced by the translator's own imagery and life experience and being aware of the act to choice that comes with every translated sentence paves the way for translator to find their own creative voices. Resumen: The implementation of the American neoliberal model in Chile four decades ago, in addition to the nation's participation in the globalized world, has led to significant changes in society. In fact, the effects of the adoption of that paradigm are evident in a wide variety of areas, including that of the use of the language. For this reason, it is of interest for linguists and translators to do research on the influence of the English language and American culture on Chilean society. For this reason, the objectives of this study were to verify the presence of English loanwords in the written press in order to describe them, determine their type and token frequency and patterns of use, and infer the causes of their adoption in Spanish.

Resumen: The present paper, based on a thorough comparative study of some samples from the translated version Turbulence with its original Chinese novel Fuzao as an example for cultural translation of local literature, has examplified a discourse of Chapter 31 between the above two versions in teaching practice and explored that no matter how domesticating and foreignizing or literal translation and free translation are defined, they are source text oriented translation terms used for the same purpose of faithful translation in practice.

Resumen: The lay judge system was introduced in Japan in May 2009 in an attempt to promote citizen participation in legal decision making. In line with this new development, the Supreme Court of Japan created a promotional video, which is currently available at http://www.saibanin.courts.go.jp/news/video2.hyml. The video has scenes involving several Japanese expressions that have proved to be hard to translate into English.

Resumen: Changes in the new media environment are radically shifting the ways audiences consume media products. For instance, fans of American sitcoms in Korea participate in online discussions about plots and characters. They also exchange amateur subtitle translations and comment on them. This new form of Internet subtitling done by amateur translators employs more creative and individualistic strategies than conventional translations done by professionals. This Internet-based practice suggests the emergence of new cultural sensibilities and cultural tastes in Korea.

Resumen: This presentation is divided into four parts: 1) The style in which the subjectless introductory sentence in Yasunari Kawabata's "Snow Country" has been translated into English definitely requires scrutiny. 2) The Americanized Huraki Murakami never uses any haiku-like subjectless sentences. 3) Although Kawabata scatters haiku-like flashes across his work, he does this calculatedly so that the scattered images are closely connected in a manner exclusive to the Japanese tradition. 4) Kawabata's texts, which are based on traditional Japanese culture have been trated as untouchable artifacts, while Murakami's texts have been substantially modified for publication in the United States.

Resumen: The need for subtitled audiovisual products has exploded during the past decades. At the same time, contrary to what might be expected, the professional and the economic status of subtitlers has deteriorated dramatically. This presentation will critique the research premises and objectives of the semi-automation of interlingual subtitling.

Resumen: Arizona Senate Bill 1070 was recently signed into law by Governor Brewer. What are the potential consequences in the area of translation and interpretation and civil rights of this new law? The Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI, does not address directly the right to a translator and interpreter, nor does Executive Order 13166, a reiteration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed in 2000 by President Clinton. Yet, these are fundamental documents which stablish, based on the notion of equal access, that language rights are civil rights. The law has also implications in terms of the Supremacy Clause of the U.S . Constitution and the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments. The crucial role of the translator and interpreter in this context will be addressed.
