Resumen: This paper aims to explore the strategies that translators adopt when rendering English proper nouns into Arabic and, consequently, offer both qualitative and quantitative insights into this process. It is a case study of proper nouns in professional Arabic translation based on one English novel (The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (2008); translated into Arabic by Taiba Sadeq (2011). Proper nouns are categorized and analyzed in terms of internal syntactic structure (Central, Converted and Extended proper nouns), as well as thematically (e.g. personal names, names of institutions, bodies of water, etc.), with an eye to establishing correlations between the type of proper noun and the translation strategy opted for. The results indicate that the translator's choice between different strategies is governed by two main factors. Firstly, the translator needs to check whether the proper noun individualizes entities by means of ordinary language predicates (e.g. common nouns), proper nouns proper, or a combination of both, as each type usually requires a different strategy. Secondly, the translator needs to pay attention to the degree of comprehensibility and naturalness of his/her rendering, which may necessitate consolidating the single strategies of transliteration and translation with addition in the form of a generic word or even substitution in the case of idiomatic proper nouns. The paper concludes that proper nouns cannot be treated uniformly in translation between English and Arabic because they belong to different categories and, consequently, they may require different translation strategies including transliteration, complete translation, partial translation, transliteration plus addition, and translation plus addition.

Resumen: In this new edition there is a new chapter on teaching vocabulary, a section on discovery techniques, more on task-based learning and learner training, and a recognition of the change of perception about what communicative competence might be. Many of the categories of communicative activities have been rearranged and there is a more detailed account of teacher roles, together with a section on the use of the mother tongue. The sample lesson plan has been changed and the many examples from textbooks generally reflect the materials now in use rather than those which were current when the first edition came out. The structure of "The Practice of English Language Teaching" remains essentially the same. In part A; Background, the author looks at some of the theoretical concerns which influence the teaching of English as a foreign language. In part B, Practice, the author looks at study materials and techniques for teaching, and in part C, Management and Planning, he looks at how classrooms and students can be organized and what is the best way to prepare for a lesson. The appendix on materials evaluation should help anyone who is in a position to select the textbook which the students are going to use. "The Practice of Language Teaching" deals specifically with the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). It is not focused especially on English as a second language (ESL) although much of the context of the book can be applied to that slightly different teaching situation. The book is directed at the teaching of "general" English; the teaching of English for specific purposes (ESP) does not form a major part of the work.

Resumen: The paper examines sound schemes in Arabic original poetic prose and English translation. These are reverse rhyme, rhyme, pararhyme and consonance. Looked at from the vantage point of sound symbolism, an attempt is made to verify their expressive and thematic functions in ST. In some cases, the concept has apparently been proven applicable and the claims made in this regard are plausible. As to the interlingual patterns of sound symbolism, the study has come to the conclusion that ST and TT diverge when it comes to how onomatopoeic elements evoke meaning. The strategic decisions taken by translators in addressing translation problems depend largely on how sensitive they are towards the ST phonic aspect and affiliations. They employ compensation in kind and in place whenever and wherever that is felt to be required, hence, replacing ST phonological recurrence with morphological and lexical ones. These higher-level devices are but one means of achieving parallel effects in the TT. However, consonance is regularly used as a prime solution for the problem of equivalence. It is axiomatic that in any attempt of translation a certain degree of loss is expected in terms of failure to relay the ST message content intact. Another kind of damage consists in the impossibility of rendering ST scripts into TT. The significance of Arabic letters to the readers of Arabic will definitely be mismatched in the TT as they imply culturally broader connotations and allusions to the Islamic heritage. The graphological input to the message in the Arabic text will hardly be imparted by the TT Roman script.

Resumen: Drawing from more than two hundred examples representing twenty-two languages of wide genetic and typological variety, the author guides the reader through a broad collection of situations encountered in the analysis and practice of transalation. THis enterprise gains structure and rigor from the methods and finding of contemporary linguistic theory, while realism and relevance are served by the choice of "naturalistic" examples from published translations. Coverage draws from a veriety of genres and text-types (literary work, the Bible, newspaper articles, legal and philosophical wrting, for example), and addresses a through selection of structural-functional aspects. Resumen: La emoción que altera la serenidad del estado de ánimo afecta los movimientos musculares del aparato fonatorio y esto se manifiesta en la entonación, o sea, en el tono de la voz. Emilio Stevanovitch sabía esto tan visceralmente que no solo se preocupó por aplicarlo en sus intervenciones y en transmitirlo a sus alumnos, sino que hasta inventó un sistema gráfico para registrarlo, cuyo uso podría resultar de interés en la actualidad. El impacto de sus enseñanzas marcó a varias generaciones de intérpretes. Acabamos de referirnos solo a una de ellas: la importancia de lo emocional y de lo implícito en la creación y recreación del sentido. Hay otras enseñanzas notables que en mi opinión hicieron escuela, el entrenamiento específico de la atención y la memoria, el rápido barrido de datos para descubrir lo esencial en un texto y lo que hoy, desde una perspectiva renovada, podríamos llamar algo así como "dinamización cognitiva y cultural".

Resumen: First published in 1926, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage is one of the most celebrated reference books of the twentieth century. Commonly known as "Fowler," after its inimitable author, H.W. Rewritten, updated, and expanded to take into account the vast linguistic changes of the past three-quarters of a century, here are thousands of alphabetically arranged entries, offering advice and background information on all aspects of the English language, from grammar to spelling to literary style. This masterful revision has been carried out by Robert Burchfield, hailed by The Chicago Tribune as "the greatest living lexicographer." In his hands, the MEU has retained its beloved traits--accessibility, authority, and (not least) personality--while acquiring new ones, most notably, up-to-the-minute currency. Resumen: El principal objetivo de esta "Lingüística" son los conceptos, métodos y teorías de la lingüística actual. El plan general de esta nueva edición es presentar la lingüística, en cuanto que estudio del lenguaje (o de las lenguas), como una coordinación o correspondencia entre dos planos, el plano del sonido articulado y el plano del significado conceptual, mediados por la forma gramatical. La forma puede entenderse en el sentido en que la entendía Saussure, como la relación entre un concepto y su representación sonora intelectiva, el signo, pero también como las relaciones que entablan las unidades que ya tienen forma, los signos. Las relaciones de dependencia y constitución entre signos son la forma o estructura gramatical. Este libro está pensado como una selección de temas que son recurrentes en la disciplina, desde la fonología hasta la semántica. El desarrollo es "estructural" y "funcional". Está concebido más como síntesis práctica para un curso universitario que como exposición metódica y teórica. Cada capítulo incluye preguntas, ejercicios o problemas. Las primeras se fijan en aspectos de un texto susceptible de discusión. Los ejercicios deben servir para reforzar el contenido del capítulo. Los problemas requieren más reflexión y a veces no tienen una solución única.
