Since Marcel Bataillon produced his magisterial book Erasme et l'Espagne in 1937, it has been generally accepted by scholars that a key influence in the early part of the 16th century for the transmission of reforming ideas, both political and religious was the figure of the Dutchman Desiderius Erasmus. That acceptance was re-inforced by the greatly expanded second Spanish edition of the work, produced by Alonso Alatorre in 1966 and which became the base for all subsequent studies of Erasmian influence in Spain
