Resumen: Dada la demanda de trabajos de traducción destinados al público hispanohablante en los EE. UU. en lo tocante al ámbito de la salud, la traducción de documentos médico-jurídicos, como los consentimientos informados, exponen al traductor a un desafío lingüístico multidisciplinario donde no sólo se requiere el conocimiento de la terminología específica de las distintas áreas temáticas afines, sino que, además, es fundamental su familiarización con los principios, el propósito y las distintas formas de presentación de dicho material. En esta presentación, procuraré transmitir la lógica del consentimiento informado, sus componentes y resultados esperados, para que el traductor componga un cuadro mental precedente a la traducción, que le sirva como esquema para una investigación productiva y un trabajo satisfactorio y eficaz.

"The very first job I did, the very first thing I published, was a translation from an old Norse text, an old Icelandic saga, a runic saga, and that task of translation was an eye-opener to me about the difficulties that are involved in translation. Because here I was, translating a work that had been written a thousand years before in a very very different society, and having to put it into an English that the late 20th. century British and American readers would understand, while at the same time trying to capture some of the social and political mores, and literaty mores, of the time en which the runic saga was written".

Resumen: Raúl Eduardo Narváez holds the degrees of PHD in Modern Languages- Specialisation: English Language [USAL] Sworn Translator - English Language [UBA], Teacher of English [I.S.J.M A- 85].He has given lectures and also published many articles about the act of translating both in Argentina and abroad. In 1994 he was awarded, by he Association of Sworn Translators of the City of Buenos Aires, a scholarship for specialisation in translation at the University of Granada, Spain. Resumen: El siguiente artículo tiene como finalidad presentar las diferentes teorías sobre el análisis de la entonación del inglés que les son de gran utilidad a los estudiantes de las carreras universitarias afines a este idioma. Este trabajo recorre los aspectos fundamentales del estudio de la entonación y ofrece ejemplos claros para que se puedan apreciar sus funciones en el contexto discursivo. Asimismo, el propósito del artículo es proveer de herramientas a los futuros traductores e intérpretes que los puedan ayudar a entender la forma en la que el lenguaje funciona en una manera comunicativa y de interacción. Para lograrlo, se debe tener en cuenta no sólo las palabras y los enunciados sino también las intenciones, las actitudes y los significados pragmáticos que van más allá de los aspectos lexicales y estructurales. Ser capaces de entender las funciones y los usos de la entonación del idioma inglés es de vital importancia para que los futuros profesionales decodifiquen los significados de sus interlocutores y, a su vez, les otorgue herramientas para que ellos mismos se comuniquen en el idioma extranjero de una manera precisa, clara, inteligible y comunicativa.

Resumen: La calidad de una traduccion esta determinada por su fidelidad al significado del texto original, por su correccion gramatical y por su grado de -idiomaticidad-. Esta propuesta de investigacion, que tiene como fin su aplicacion a la ensenanza de la lengua inglesa a futuros traductores, enfoca uno de los tiempos verbales de esa lengua que por interferencia de la lengua materna presenta mas dificultades para la traduccion inversa: Present Perfect. La investigacion del tema se encarara desde el analisis del discurso -gramática textual- y desde la normativa de la gramatica oracional tanto en la lengua espanola como inglesa. Se recabaran muestras de ambas producidas espontaneamente por hablantes nativos de diversos grupos linguisticos con el proposito de ampliar el campo de analisis, comparacion y contraste, y constatar tanto el cumplimiento como la desviacion del uso de ambas lenguas con respecto a la normativa, en una variedad de registros linguisticos.

Resumen: Las unidades fraseológicas especializadas (UFE) presentes en el lenguaje médico se caracterizan por una serie de rasgos internos, o formales, y externos, o discursivos. Su frecuencia de aparición y su distribución textual les confiere su idiosincrasia. El objetivo de este artículo es la detección y análisis de las UFE que aparecen en el discurso biomédico nivel experto-experto escrito en lengua inglesa y española. Para cumplir este objetivo nos centramos, en primer lugar, en definir qué se entiende por unidad fraseológica especializada y qué tipos de UFE están presentes en los textos biomédicos de diferentes niveles comunicativos. A continuación, explicamos la metodología que hemos empleado, basada en el análisis de corpus. Posteriormente, con el uso de una herramienta informática de análisis de corpus, identificamos las UFE teniendo en cuenta los criterios que hemos establecido para su detección siguiendo a Kocourek (1991), Kjellmer (1994), Moon (1998) y Pavel (1994). Los resultados obtenidos nos llevan a identificar cuatro tipos relevantes de UFE en las dos lenguas: los binomios irreversibles no idiomáticos, los grupos nominales complejos, las colocaciones y las fórmulas discursivas. Su descripción contrastiva nos permite extraer una serie de conclusiones cuya aplicación más inmediata se encuentra en la traducción médica directa e inversa.

Resumen: En este artículo analizaremos, desde los estudios fraseológicos relacionados con la traducción, los elementos culturales que se activan en la mente del traductor en el momento de establecer las correspondencias de las unidades fraseológicas. Para realizar este estudio, hemos recopilado 100 expresiones fraseológicas del libro "Cien años de soledad", del escritor colombiano Gabriel García Márquez. Se trata de locuciones verbales que, la mayoría de las veces, se pueden reemplazar por un verbo con n significado similar. Suponemos que una unidad fraseológica debe ser traducida por otra de igual valor. Sin embargo, las diferencias culturales condicionan la expresión lingüística. Por lo tanto, nuestra primicia inicial parte de la base de que la equivalencia depende de la selección del referente cultural que hace el traductor. Lo anterior nos lleva a plantearnos los siguientes interrogantes: Qué hace el traductor cuando no encuentra en su cultura le referente adecuado? Qué conocimiento cultural se activa en la interpretación de las expresiones fraseológicas?

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics.
