Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Resumen: The passages contained in this volume are intended for translation from intermediate to advanced levels, and are divided into three sections: narrative, descriptive and literary/philosophical, according to the predominant subject-matter of each pais of extracts. The latter are grouped in pairs, a passage by an english writter dealing with an everyday theme being balanced by a similar passage by a spanish writer. Both extracts coincide as far as possible in approach, tone, expression and vocabulary, and it is hoped that this method of teaching translation will not only help students to improve their general standard in the latter discipline, but will also enable them to develop their capacity for expression in essay-writing.

Resumen: In this book, we have tried to speak of the grammatical structures of two languages in a way that could reasonably be expected to be understood by non-linguists who bring motivation, intelligence, and time, but no considerable amount of training in linguistics as such, to the task. Resumen: The cross-cultural pragmatics literature has paid considerable attention to the various strategies that speakers deploy when performing the speech act of requesting. This is because the degree of imposition that making a request places upon one's interlocutor(s) has been seen to be subject to cross-gender and cross-linguistic/cultural variation in terms of use and interpretation. To our knowledge, however, there are virtually no contrastive studies on Peninsular Spanish and British English within this field. Wanting to address this, and whilst acknowledging the limitations of discourse completion tests (DCTs), we employed one such test as a suitable tool for obtaining a large amount of data from male and female Spanish and British undergraduates (aged 19-25). The data was analyzed and treated not as authentic speech/discourse but as reflecting informants' perceptions and beliefs about appropriate linguistic behaviour in the performance of requests in different situations controlled for power and social distance. Thus, ours is a pragmatic approach that attempts to account for these perceptions and beliefs, which are included in the "assumptions about social roles, positions, rights and obligations [that] are part of the (usually unstated) background knowledge that is routinely brought to bear on the interpretation of utterances" (Cameron 1998: 445).

Resumen: The objective of the monograph is to contrast the different levels of the two languages involved, English and Spanish, in order to highlight the main divergences found between the two linguistic systems: besides, it also tackles some cultural and pragmatic differences. English and Spanish in Contrast is aimed at adult learners of speakers who want to increase their proficiency in any of the two languages. The book is divided into a theoretical section, where selected issues of the Spanish and English linguistic systems are explained and contrasted; and a practical section, which includes exercises to accompany the explanations and concentrates on practising upon those aspects that are a particular problem to non-native speakers and usually, the source of the most frequent mistakes. Resumen: Since the early 2000s, a number of researchers have devoted themselves to the study of wine language and discourse, and especially the genre of wine tasting notes. They have analyzed various aspects of tasting notes: their rhetorical structure, their terminology, their use of metaphors, among others. What the vast majority of these studies have attempted to show is what features most tasting notes share; in other words, they have tried to identify what a typical tasting note is like. However, analysis of tasting notes corpora reveals a number of subtle differences not only from one language to another, but also within a given language. Therefore, in this paper we have attempted to identify and categorize these differences, using an English and Spanish comparable corpus, with each language corpus subdivided into three subcorpora, on the basis of the origin of the tasting notes. Differences in content categories, format and style, both in the subcorpora of each language and between the two languages, are analyzed and discussed. Overall, the English subcorpora reveal greater variation than the Spanish ones, with some features figuring prominently in a given subcorpus and being almost invisible in another.

Resumen: Discourse analysis has drawn people's attention to micro levels in the discourse. This means that some subtle issues that were ignored in the past may carry with them some implicit meanings when looked at in the context. In this regard, topicality in Chinese usually indicates definiteness, whereas this definiteness is signaled by articles, pronouns in English texts. The difference between the two systems can result in problems in translation if not handled properly. Therefore it should be stressed that the management of theme-rheme structures should be dealt with much care from micro text levels, along with an interpretation of the macro intention of the text, so that the translation process should be highlighted. By incorporating the model of discourse analysis, the interaction between the original and translation can be realized.

Resumen: La enseñanza de la segunda lengua en las carreras de Traducción e Interpretación presenta algunas características diferenciadas de otras instancias de enseñanza de la lengua tanto en niveles iniciales como más avanzados. Este trabajo se propone hacer algunos aportes específicos en cuanto al enfoque, la metodología, las técnicas a utilizar en esta situación de enseñanza, priorizando la aplicación de contenidos, conocimientos y habilidades a la traducción inversa. Desde el punto de vista lingüístico, se adoptó un enfoque netamente descriptivista de la lengua, dentro del marco general de la Lingüística del Corpus. Se trabajó desde las premisas ofrecida por el Análisis del Discurso, privilegiando el análisis de la lengua dentro de un contexto específico por sobre las enunciaciones aisladas. Finalmente, se empleó un enfoque contrastivista para el análisis de las muestras de lengua recogidas para la investigación.

Resumen: La calidad de una traduccion esta determinada por su fidelidad al significado del texto original, por su correccion gramatical y por su grado de -idiomaticidad-. Esta propuesta de investigacion, que tiene como fin su aplicacion a la ensenanza de la lengua inglesa a futuros traductores, enfoca uno de los tiempos verbales de esa lengua que por interferencia de la lengua materna presenta mas dificultades para la traduccion inversa: Present Perfect. La investigacion del tema se encarara desde el analisis del discurso -gramática textual- y desde la normativa de la gramatica oracional tanto en la lengua espanola como inglesa. Se recabaran muestras de ambas producidas espontaneamente por hablantes nativos de diversos grupos linguisticos con el proposito de ampliar el campo de analisis, comparacion y contraste, y constatar tanto el cumplimiento como la desviacion del uso de ambas lenguas con respecto a la normativa, en una variedad de registros linguisticos.
