Resumen: This paper investigates the question of whether the classifications and general descriptions of irony, as true as they may seem, are plausible enough for enquiries into areas such as translation. The generic and philosophical analysis criteria provided by the literary criticism, literary theory and pragmatic approaches hover around broad interpretive models of irony. These criteria are impractical for the analysis of irony for translation purposes, although the translation of irony relies essentially on interpretation and creative reformulation. This is particularly the case when dealing with typologically distant languages, such as Arabic and English, in a specific text-type. To be able to "work" with ironic texts there is a need for a more objective and applicable approach, which considers the identification of formal and rhetorical devices of ironic texts, hence a linguistic analysis that explains the communicative function of these devices at both the utterance and discourse structure levels

Resumen: La primera parte contiene una lista de unidades monetarias básicas oficiales, junto con las abreviaturas pertinentes, ordenadas en orden alfabético por nombre de país. Los países enumerados son los Estados Miembros de las Naciones Unidas y las monedas enumeradas son las que circulaban oficialmente a marzo de 1993. La segunda sección contiene una lista en la que se menciona en primer término la unidad monetaria, seguida por el nombre del país o países en que está en circulación esta unidad.

Resumen: Diminutives serve a variety of semantic functions such as preference, satire, affection, endearment etc. The present study endeavours to highlight similarities and differences between both languages and the affect they have on how diminutives are translated from Arabic to English. It is hypothesized that the use of noun phrases preceded by adjectives could be more recurrent than those preceded by quantifiers in rendering diminutives from Arabic into English. Two theoretical surveys of diminutives in both languages were introduced and professional translators were handed a literary text to render into English. On the basis of the linguistic and statistical analysis of the translations involving diminutives, it has been found out that diminutives have been mainly translated into noun phrases preceded by adjectives more than those noun phrases preceded by quantifiers.

Resumen: La presente lista provisional de 619 artículos ha sido preparada con motivo de la Conferencia de las naciones Unidas sobre fuentes de energía nuevas y renovables. Los términos y títulos escogidos constituyen una selección basada en los temas que habrá de examinar la conferencia. Para su elaboración se contó asimismo con el asesoramiento de la secretaría de la Conferencia y de los Servicios de Traducción del departamento de Sevicios de revisión y actualización, a fin de producir un boletín de terminología más extenso que refleje las actuaciones y el resultado de la Conferencia .Los textos en inglés, francés y español han sido producidos mediante tecnología de elaboración de textos. Los textos en ruso, chino y árabe fueron mecanografiados siguiendo métodos tradicionales. Los índices aparecen en el orden siguiente: árabe, chino, francés, ruso y español. Los documentos preparatorios para la Conferencia y los informes de los grupos técnicos figuran entre los materiales utilizados para la selección de términos. Se señala a la atención la bibliografía, en que se anuncien los textos empleados durante la preparación de esta lista provisional

Resumen: El boletín se divide en dos volúmenes y en él figuran términos que han aparecido en documentos de las Naciones Unidas sobre la materia. Para la traducción de esta publicación se han utilizado los datos del sistema de terminología multilingüe UNTERM.

Resumen: The present paper addresses the ethnography and translatability of Jordanian proverbs. It offers a comparativel contrastive view between Jordanian and English proverbs with an eye to bridging the otherwise wide gap between the two cultures. The proverbial depiction of Jordanian culture is meant to contribute to better understanding of Jordanian valúes, convictions and ideáis by other cultures, thus hoping to encourage proverbial borrowing between languages. This study is also expected to be of valué to disciplines of folklore, anthropology and sociology, as it highlights the indigenous aspects of Jordanian culture. Finally, the paper offers a theory-based methodology for the translation of proverbial expressions.

Resumen: Multi-word units (henceforth MWUs) have two important characteristics: firstly, they are pervasive in the English language. Secondly, these units that contribute to the nativelike quality of the native speakers' discourse. This paper will seek to define these units and identify their place in the native speaker's cornmunicative competence. As the majority of translators are foreign learners rather than true bilinguals, they will need to acquire MWUs in order to approximate nativelike competence in English and add idiomaticity and naturalness to their discourse. One (partial) solution the paper proposes is the compilation of an Arabic- English dictionary of English MWUs.

Resumen: Conditionals in English can traditionally be viewed according to two different perspectives. One is a simplistic approach based on certain 'cases'; the other is centered on the truth value of the protasis and apodosis. This argument is based on the semantics of the conditional structures, regardless of the syntax involved. In a similar vein, the complexity of conditionals in Arabic stems from the fact that the syntax of the conditional structure does not necessarily point to the semantics involved. This affinity between the two language systems in terms of conditionality is examined within the context of two English translations of the Arabic religious text Sahih Muslim. The present study adopts an approach that focuses on both syntax and semantics to underline the interplay and/or dissociation of the two in practice. The study reveals that Siddiqui's versions of translating 'law' (and its variant 'law-la') and 'inn' structures into English are mostly inaccurate, where the syntax-semantics interplay and/or dissociation is not duly observed in practice. Khattab's versions, however, point to a tendency to start from the entrenched premise of literalism, which is stimulated by adopting the simplistic approach to English conditional structures, being akin to documentary translation where awkwardness is common practice.

Resumen: The present paper may be considered as a modest contribution to translation studies. it mainly discusses folkloric songs. the translations provided are applied to "semantic translation" where there is focus on the semantic content of the source language text (SLT), or to "communicative translation" where the focus is on the response of the receptor. Examples included in the paper are quoted from references that dealt with poetry, poetry translation, or folkloric songs. Other groups of examples are just personal communication with native speakers. The translated texts of the folkloric are the authors` own translations.

Resumen: El presente boletín contiene una lista de cargos y funciones existentes en la Secretaría de las Naciones Unidas, el ACNUR, el PNUD, el UNICEF, el UNITAR y la Corte Internacional de Justicia, tal como figuran en documentos sometidos al Departamento de Servicios de Conferencias para su traducción y sin que su inclusión implique un uso aceptado formalmente. Por razónes técnicas, el orden en que se han consignado los cargos y funciones es el siguiente: inglés, francés, ruso, español, chino y árabe.
