Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Resumen: Drawing on cognitive linguistics and psychology, this paper attempts to model the subtitler's decision-making as involving two types of operations. They are referred to as System 1 and System 2, the former being fast, automatic and requiring little effort, and the latter being slower, controlled and effortful. To test the dual-processing hypothesis, I analyse trainee subtitlers' renditions with a focus on the construction "you + to like + me" which exemplifies a cross-language asymmetry and a potential (disguised) translation challenge. Remarkably, the English construction is employed equally-conventionally to represent the concept of being favourably disposed to somebody in a non-physical/sexual manner, on the one hand, and being attracted to somebody, on the other. In Polish, however, the "prototypes" will typically be represented as distinct expressions. The present findings suggest that because differentiating between the prototypes and coding them linguistically is not challenging to the participants, it is the automation of their judgment that leads them to settle for flawed target variants (Stage 1). Additional evidence is obtained (Stage 2) as participants are induced to go from System 1 to System 2 thinking-a cross-stage comparison indicates that the fast-to-slow switch reorients the trainees' subtitling choices and ultimately improves translation quality.

Resumen: While scholars may still argue for years to come on the concepts of good and bad quality of translation, the translation and localization industry developed tools for quantitative assessment of the quality of translation of technical text involving the relatively simple method of tracking and evaluating errors - all based on the assumption that a good translation is the one without errors. One of the goals of linguistic education is to prepare students for different careers they might take up, which might include a technical translator position. To achieve these goals students must learn not only languages, but also at least basics of the trade they might wish to develop. Since knowledge of QA methodology and criteria used in the translation assessment procedures is an important factor of individual translator success, I believe that they should be presented as a part of the future translators curricula, together with tools and methods for verifying and improving the technical translation quality.

Resumen: El trabajo final del Diploma y Posgrado en Traducción de Universitario Crandon consistió en la traducción de un texto corto y su correspondiente fundamentación a través de un proyecto de traducción. La tarea apuntaba a la articulación de las teorías aprendidas y la praxis. El marco teórico-reflexivo desarrollado por Antoine<Berman> en Pour une critique des traductions dio respuesta a tres inquietudes esenciales. En la determinación de la estrategia que íbamos a priorizar, resultó fundamental elaborar un proyecto en función del texto, del horizonte traductivo y de la finalidad de la traducción. Con respecto a nuestra intención de no encorsetar ni dogmatizar nuestro trabajo, habilitó la aplicación de una u otra teoría en función del proyecto y del texto, ya que Berman se opone a someter una traducción a una sola teoría que, directa o indirectamente, le diga «lo que hay que hacer». En cuanto a nuestro deseo de tener visibilidad en el texto traducido, nos dio libertad en la toma de decisiones a la hora de jugarnos por determinada opción o de acoger marcas de extranjeridad.

Resumen: Desde su consolidación como disciplina independiente, la traductología experimentó avances sustanciales tanto en el área teórica y descriptiva como en la aplicada. Concibo la traductología como una disciplina autónoma de marcada naturaleza interdisciplinar, conformada por tres grandes ramas: la historia, la teoría y la crítica de la traducción. Esta visión tripartita fue sostenida por autores que integraron el Committee for Translation Criticism de la FIT. Sus trabajos, escritos en su mayoría entre 1987 y 1990, fueron publicados en 1994 con el título Miscellany on Translation Criticism. El tema de la crítica tal vez nunca había sido abordado en forma tan sistemática.1 Ya en 1959, la FIT había dedicado un congreso a La calidad en materia de traducción en el cual se plantearon dos ideas medulares: la importancia de considerar la finalidad de la traducción en lugar de criterios abstractos y la necesidad de que la crítica de traducciones se convirtiera en un sector especializado de la crítica literaria. En 1995 se publica una obra clave, póstuma, de Antoine <Berman>. Pour un critique des traductions : John Donne debería ser un referente en la materia, pero no tuvo la repercusión merecida. Recién en 2009 fue traducida al inglés. Han transcurrido décadas y sin embargo la crítica -área crucial de la traductología aplicada- no ha hecho avances sustanciales. Y una traductología sin crítica es, en mi opinión, una traductología en crisis.

Resumen: En las últimas décadas, la avanzada de ciertos conceptos tales como la globalización, la calidad, la eficiencia, la seguridad y la garantía de producto marcaron el camino que condujo a un nuevo milenio de historia humana. Estos conceptos se han arraigado con fuerza en la vida económica y social del hombre, configurando un nuevo escenario, donde el profuso intercambio de información y la mayor presión de trabajo y rendimiento han producido cambios, entre otros, en las incumbencias profesionales. Todo ello en un entorno mediático donde la información tiene un ciclo de vida cada vez más breve, las fronteras físicas tienden a desdibujarse y la demanda de documentación es inmediata. Acompañan a este fenómeno, el incremento de la competitividad y el surgimiento de grupos internacionales de empresas con terminología corporativa específica.

Resumen: This paper aims to describe a sample of community translation: the web site Lyrics Translate.com, which offers translation for lyrics. Community translation consists of the translation of a large volume of content due to the collaboration of a group of amateur translators in Internet and it is characterized by the lack of a professional who guarantees the quality of the final product. The power and reach of amateur translation is surprising. The willingness of translators to work on a project without direct financial compensation is a widespread reality. Translators are motivated by recognition from the community, a sense of accomplishment that comes from improving as a translator and from enjoyment of the material they're translating. Using French translations into Spanish language from the web site Lyrics Translate.com, we analyze their performance and the way in which users accomplish the task of translation. With this purpose, we will address some questions such as who are the translators, why they do that, the working languages and, specially, the quality of the translated material. Little attention has been paid to this newborn phenomenon of web sites offering translations carried out by amateur translators. However, these virtual communities around translation are widely spread in the cyberspace and, what is more, these new translating practices have already become a challenge for the future of translation professional work.

Resumen: La terminología es una herramienta fundamental para asegurar la coherencia, la estandarización y la calidad de las traducciones. En contextos multiculturales y en situaciones internacionales delicadas, además de su función tradicional de mantener la neutralidad del idioma, estandarizar los términos de uso frecuente e incorporar neologismos, las instituciones se ven obligadas a responder a los desafíos derivados de acontecimientos políticos y situaciones contenciosas. El propósito de este trabajo es explicar la manera en que las Naciones Unidas responden a estas necesidades mediante la exposición de casos prácticos desde una perspectiva histórica.

Resumen: La traducción de un texto suele entenderse consumada con la presentación de la traducciónproducto al comitente. En este trabajo, específicamente dedicado a la traducción de textos jurídicos, se aborda la conveniencia de incluir la preparación de un informe como parte del encargo de traducción jurídica y como un eslabón esencial en la cadena de relación profesional traductorcomitente. Las decisiones que se adoptan a lo largo de la traducción-proceso no siempre resultan visibles o justificadas para el destinatario; lo mismo puede decirse de las diversas estrategias traductoras que se escogen para resolver problemas de construcción textual, terminológicos o de falta de equivalencia cultural o funcional, entre muchos otros. El informe de traducción jurídica puede servir como vehículo eficaz para la explicitación de esas decisiones y elecciones, con miras al fortalecimiento del vínculo profesional traductor-cliente y a una mayor visibilidad de la trama de procesos cognitivos que subyacen en la dinámica de trasvase.

Resumen: Qualitative assessment is a much maligned exercise which has to evaluate and balance criteria measured in terms of: originality, thematic diversity, innovation, sustainability, multi-disciplinary research, benefits, and impact. This article departs from a study of some Spanish evaluating agencies -also making reference when possible to their European equivalent- and their assesment criteria. After drafting a list of merits listed in each agency the article poses some basic questions regarding assessment. It then goes into the nature of assessment criteria and offers concrete data on Translaton and Interpreting Studies journal indexing.

Resumen: La calidad de una traduccion esta determinada por su fidelidad al significado del texto original, por su correccion gramatical y por su grado de -idiomaticidad-. Esta propuesta de investigacion, que tiene como fin su aplicacion a la ensenanza de la lengua inglesa a futuros traductores, enfoca uno de los tiempos verbales de esa lengua que por interferencia de la lengua materna presenta mas dificultades para la traduccion inversa: Present Perfect. La investigacion del tema se encarara desde el analisis del discurso -gramática textual- y desde la normativa de la gramatica oracional tanto en la lengua espanola como inglesa. Se recabaran muestras de ambas producidas espontaneamente por hablantes nativos de diversos grupos linguisticos con el proposito de ampliar el campo de analisis, comparacion y contraste, y constatar tanto el cumplimiento como la desviacion del uso de ambas lenguas con respecto a la normativa, en una variedad de registros linguisticos.
