Resumen: Today, we constantly come across abbreviations of various types. They are used in all fields of documentation, information and communication, and are often in fact the decisive carriers of information. Anybody wanting to undestand a text and to participate in a discussion must know the meaning of these abbreviations. Unfortunately, however, it is finding the meaning that often proves very difficult , as available reference material is inadequate. Owing to the continuos increase of abbreviations all over the world, no one, at present, can be up to date in this field and be able to provide the proper answers. For the time being, efforts shhould be limited to giving as many answers as possible at least in some sectors. This book is an attempt to do so.

Stedman's Medical Dictionary od medical Science and Literature, first published in 1833. THis work continued through succesive editions until the 23rd and last edition, which was edited by Thomas Lathrop Stedman MD, in 1932. Five years later, Dr. Stedman wrote a modernized version of the Dunglison Dictionary. It was published in 1911 as A Practical Medical Dictionary and is now known as Stedman's.
