Resumen: This is the first edition of this work which is not P. G. Osborn. I have not tried to improve the book. The fact that it went through five editions is a tribute to Osborn's choice of subject matter. His gift of pithy expression was admirably suited to a work of this caracter. I have contented myself with bringing the book up to date, nevertheless the amount of alteration involved in covering the changes of law in the past decade has been very much more than might be expected in a concise law dictionary. The work of the Law Commission and of the Criminal Law Revision Committee has resulted in changes which run right through this work. In addition, the modern tendency of trying to legislate in detail for everything results in Acts of unbelievable complexity.

Resumen: Law Society's Gazette "This remarkable little book is not only an admirable law dictionary, but a miniature law encyclopedia. Definitions of current legal terms are accompanied, in many cases, by a concise exposition of the relevant branch of the law, with reference to authorities, and sometimes the historical background is outlined. This is particularly useful to a practitioner venturing into an unfamiliar field, who wants a quick guide to his subject...the balance and composition of the entries could not be improved upon...". Since 1876, this dictionary has supplied generations of students with a comprehensive yet concise pocket guide to every variety of legalese, from the commonplace to the wilfully arcane; this edition continues the great tradition in being refined and updated to accommodate the very latest developments in the ever-evolving language of the law.

Resumen: There is always a danger that the legal significance will change, and the definition will become inaccurate or misleading. As Samuel Johnson has observed, "Definitions are hazardous". The definitions really heavily upon cases and authority. A deliberate effort has been made to ensure that the definitions are accurate both from an historical perspective and in light of recent development the law. The goal or these definitions is general familiarity, no effort has been made to include all the competing definitions. The second, third, and now fourth editions have expanded the definitions and have incorporated the most current authorities.

Resumen: The Constitutional Law Dictionary: Individual Rights focused on concepts of constitutionalism, words and phrases common to American constitutional law, and leading case decisions rendered by the United States Supreme Court. Several techniques have been utilized to help the reader locate entries with ease. Precise language is a basic requeriment of every intellectual discipline. This is particularly true in the field of law. We undertook to write this dictionary in pursuit of clear and precise legal language. Students of constitutional law know the extent to which the law is ever changing. With each new term of the Supreme Court the justices revierw their previous decisions and those of their predecessors in light of current legal and social circumstances. The changes that are made are frequently incremental: a nuance here and an adjustment there. The Court may simply wish to apply an established doctrine or more clearly define a standard in a particular case as it weighs real-world situations on the scales of justice. The system is constantly in flux. It is evolutionary, developmental, and responsive to human need.

Resumen: "This massive new edition of «Black's Law Dictionary» continues the undertaking begun by Henry Campell Black in 1891: to marshal legal terms to the fullest possible extent and to define them accurately. But more than that, it continues the effort begun with the seventh edition: to follow established lexicographic principles in selecting headwords and in phrasing definitions, to provide easy- to-follow pronunciations, and to raise the level of scholarship through serious research and careful reassessment. The terminology in several fields of law now finds greater coverage in the book than ever before. (...) For the first "Black's Law Dicctionary" contains citations that stay current: with a massive undertaking by the key-number classification team at West, I've added more than 10.000 citations to key numbers and to "Corpus Juris Secundum"- a significant aid to research".

Resumen: The vocabulary of the law has shown corresponding change and growth. A word, in the often quoted dictum of Mr. Justice Holmes, is "the skin of a living thought", and the words of statutes and judicial opinions reflect the contemporary thinking of legislators and jurists. In order adequately to represent this thinking in the fourth edition, a patient examination was made of the thousands of opinions handed down by the appellate courts each year. Some revisions and additions have been included in this revised fourth edition. Abbreviations of common words and phrases likely to be encountered by user are explained in appropriate places throughout the main body of the work. A table of abbreviations of the titles of law reports, textbooks, and other legal literature is contained in the back of the volume and a guide to pronunciation is included in the front of the volume.
