The author's preface states that A Communicative Grammar of English is intended primarily for the "advanced overseas student" who has learned English as a second language, but many professional communicators who speak English as a first language may also find this book useful. It is designed to give the maximm help to moreadvanced students of english, and for this reason employs a communicative rather than a structural approach. The main part of the grammar is consequently devoted to the uses of grammar and not to grammatical structure.
