Resumen: This volume presents fifteen original research papers by renowned specialists in their respective fields. A variety of research traditions are included, such as dialect geography and sociolinguistics, but also smaller sub-fields such as the study of slang and perceptual dialectology. Varieties studied include the South, the Eastern Seaboard, the Middle West, African American English, Cuban English, and others. A growing sense of unity in the discipline is reflected by recurring topics and methods across earlier boundaries between sub-disciplines. For instance, computerized data and statistical analyses are standard tools nowadays, and a few papers explicitly address the possibilities and limitations of these methods. The study of variation and change of linguistic varieties has largely replaced earlier, monolithic notions of dialect, and the question of change in dialects, the erosion of traditional speech forms under the impact of modern communication patterns and socio-economic developments, is investigated in several contributions. In general, a recent orientation towards the history and development of nonstandard varieties is reflected in the book - several papers study diffusion patterns of linguistic forms, or discuss the emergence of individual dialects or dialectal forms in a language contact framework. Altogether, the papers provide a lively illustration of and a fairly representative selection from ongoing high-quality linguistic research into American English.

Resumen: Los textos constitucionales presentan una evidente marca cultural, en tanto dan respuesta a las necesidades y aspiraciones axiológicas y organizativas de un Estado. En este trabajo se analizan, de manera contrastiva, fragmentos de textos constitucionales referidos a derechos fundamentales de Estados Unidos de América e Inglaterra, aprobados, en el primer caso, luego de la guerra de independencia (Constitución de 1787) y, en el segundo, en el contexto de la puja de poder entre la Corona y el Parlamento (Petition of Right1628 y Bill of Rights 1689). Luego de una breve presentación del contexto histórico-cultural de ambos textos, se estudian los diferentes modos en que se cristalizan las características propias del inglés jurídico de estos textos, como la presencia de elementos léxicos del latín y el francés, el registro formal y arcaizante, la redundancia expresiva, la proposiciones yuxtapuestas, etc., y los desafíos que estos rasgos implican en el proceso de traducción al español, ilustrados con ejemplos concretos. Finalmente, se examina el producto final en relación con la teoría de los actos de habla y el enfoque interaccionista, lo que permite analizar la permanencia de la intención de los constituyentes respecto del "hacer hacer", es decir, que el texto constitucional sea una fuente de inspiración para el compromiso y la acción ciudadana.

Resumen: Los orígenes del common law se retrotraen a la era medieval. Es una práctica que, luego, se sistematizó de modo tal que los casos importantes se asentaron en repertorios que demarcaron los principios y las normas jurídicas para casos posteriores. Según la autora de la nota, los planes de estudio de la carrera de traductorado público, en general, incluyen la formación en el proceso de traducción, más el abordaje teórico y conceptual del derecho en inglés y en español. También subraya que nuestro sistema jurídico es de base romanística, con desarrollo de codificación, mientras que el angloamericano está constituido por el common law, de base jurisprudencial y con arraigo en la costumbre. Sobre estas diferencias y detalles se refiere en este artículo, que resignifica algunos aspectos del sistema jurídico británico relevantes para la labor del traductor.

Resumen: Dada la demanda de trabajos de traducción destinados al público hispanohablante en los EE. UU. en lo tocante al ámbito de la salud, la traducción de documentos médico-jurídicos, como los consentimientos informados, exponen al traductor a un desafío lingüístico multidisciplinario donde no sólo se requiere el conocimiento de la terminología específica de las distintas áreas temáticas afines, sino que, además, es fundamental su familiarización con los principios, el propósito y las distintas formas de presentación de dicho material. En esta presentación, procuraré transmitir la lógica del consentimiento informado, sus componentes y resultados esperados, para que el traductor componga un cuadro mental precedente a la traducción, que le sirva como esquema para una investigación productiva y un trabajo satisfactorio y eficaz.
