EE.UU es un buen exponente de esta realidad. Cada día llegan a este país nuevos inmigrantes, refugiados o ciudadanos ilegales con su lengua nativa y sus tradiciones culturales como único equipaje. tal situación conlleva una serie de problemas que ha llevado en los últimos diez años a la creación de programas para la formación de traductores e intérpretes competentes que ayuden a esta población en sus relaciones con la justicia, la sanidad, la educación u otros servicios públicos.

Resumen: Community interpreting and translation enable public service providers and users to communicate in situations where they do not share the same language. These professions are essential for social equity and egalitarian access to legal, health, education and other services. Many countries with significant numbers of migrants or autochthonous language minorities have developed more or less satisfactory services and standards in this burgeoning subfield of translation and interpreting. Instances can be identified of countries that have made significant progress (e.g., Australia, Canada and Sweden) as well as of those which started only recently (e.g., Spain and Italy). In Arab countries, however, one can hardly find a reference to this subfield of translation studies, although situations requiring such interpreting and translation services are numerous. This paper describes and raises awareness of the status quo of community interpreting and translation in the Arab World. Three examples are focused on: Morocco as a country with a national language minority, the United Arab Emirates, as an affluent country hosting migrants, and Saudi Arabia, a country with a special religious position which hosts millions of pilgrims every year. The paper also includes recommendations based on migration and pilgrimage statistics and the experiences of the pioneering countries above.

Resumen: Arizona Senate Bill 1070 was recently signed into law by Governor Brewer. What are the potential consequences in the area of translation and interpretation and civil rights of this new law? The Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI, does not address directly the right to a translator and interpreter, nor does Executive Order 13166, a reiteration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed in 2000 by President Clinton. Yet, these are fundamental documents which stablish, based on the notion of equal access, that language rights are civil rights. The law has also implications in terms of the Supremacy Clause of the U.S . Constitution and the First, Fourth, and Fourteenth Amendments. The crucial role of the translator and interpreter in this context will be addressed.

Resumen: A 2011 Gender Violence Macrosurvey carried out by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS, Spanish Centre for Sociological Research) in collaboration with the Spanish Government alerts The Macro on Gender Violence conducted by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) gives significant figures on gender-based violence (GBV) suffered by foreign women in Spain. Based on the specificity of care for foreign women in issues of gender based violence (GBV) and taking as its starting point previous investigations by FITISPOs, the recommendations and work carried out within the European project SOS VICS and my own experience, the main aim of this article is twofold: first, to draw attention to qualitative aspects of the interactions between service providers, interpreters and foreign victims of gender based violence ( GBV), and secondly, to, investigate what happens when some ethical dilemmas come up between the different professionals that take care of GBV.
