Resumen: Esta obra trata sobre la traducción simultánea y constituye, en sí una contribución importante a la comprensión de esta materia. Pero la obra tiene un alcance mayor: el estudio riguroso de una actividad específica, la interpretación, va a servir de revelador de las operaciones congnitivas de la vida cotidiana, ésas que tanto nos cuesta detectar directamente por encontrarse, precisamente, distribuidas en forma universal. Para que se produzca esta revelación hay que actuar en dos tiempos: destruir primero la imagen social simplista de la traducción como transferencia casi automática de un código a otro, y recomponer luego la actividad en profundidad, aferrándola a los esquemas cognitivos más generales que ella misma pone en evidencia. Entre sus capítulos se destacan: Mas acá y mas allá de las palabras [en el cual se pone de manifiesto la importancia de la identidad del orador y de la presencia del intérprete], El papel de intérprete [donde se establecen las diferencias de aproximación al discurso entre el intérprete, el psicoanalista y el actor] y las interferencias [en el que se señala que las interferencias entre dos lenguas y los lapsus dentro de un idioma funcionan según las mismas reglas de articulación].

Resumen: This book deals with the history and the collective memory of a group of professionals work in the most universal organisation of the international political system. Combining the reflections of the historian and the interpreter, the research is based on original documents, the press and oral testimonies. It should be read as an essay, revolving round temporal and linear axis of the period of history it covers- from the creation of the United Nations in 1945 to the present days. The evolution of political and diplomatic relations has had an impact in the interpreters" profile. Now, interpreters do not come into the profession by chance, as they did in the past, but through training in specialised schools. What was seen as a phenomenon has become a profession.

Resumen: En este artículo me propongo discutir dos ideas que están muy extendidas entre los intérpretes de conferencia. La primera es que la traducción y la interpretación son dos actividades muy distintas, y la segunda es que la interpretación consecutiva y la interpretación simultánea, en cambio, son básicamente la misma actividad. Creo que estas dos ideas, que están interrelacionadas y que son fruto de una historia concreta, ejercen una importante influencia es la didáctica de la interpretación y, en cierto modo, impiden explorar caminos que podrían ser fructíferos.

Resumen: Interpreting, the human activity of translating oral discourse between two languages, has existed since times immemorial. As a professional activity per se, however, it is less than a century old. It dates back to the end of World War I, at the Paris conferences held in 1918, which resulted in the Treaty of Versailles and the establishment of the League of Nations. The first professional interpreters were all self-taught, but with the development of the profession and the advent of more international meetings, interpreter training began to be considered an important activity to prepare future interpreters better and faster. The first school dedicated exclusively to the training of interpreters was founded in Geneva, in 1941, by Antoine Velleman, an interpreter at the League of Nations (BOWEN e BOWEN, 1984). Many other appeared in the following decades.

Resumen: Interpreters have always existed; interpreting has even been called the second oldest profession in the world. Conference interpreting however is a more recent development. It is generally considered that it started towards the end of the First World War. For centuries, french (and before it latin) had been the language of international diplomacy. However, during the negotiations of The Treaty of Versailles, british, and more importantly, american statesmen who didn't speak french, demanded that there be two official languages, french and english. ANd interpreters no longer simply provide one-to-one linguistic mediation but became fully-fledged participants who were given the floor to interpret, in the first person, delegates' statements into the other official language. As this activity took place within the framework of a conference, it naturally came to be known as conference interpreting.
