Resumen: Este es uno de los primeros libros centrados exclusivamente en esta modalidad traductora que se publican en lengua española. El autor nos ofrece una visión de conjunto sobre la subtitulación tanto en sus aspectos históricos como socioculturales y laborales: desde la génesis de esta práctica traductora y su articulación en nuestra sociedad, fundamentalmente por oposición al doblaje, hasta las distintas etapas profesionales que se suceden en la generación de subtítulos, pasando por ciertos aspectos lingüísticos y formales que caracterizan su presentación en pantalla. Además de establecer una taxonomía de los diferentes tipos de subtítulos que existen, también se da cabida en la obra a cuestiones relacionadas con el valor semiótico de la imagen, la dimensión pedagógica de los subtítulos, la vulnerabilidad de una traducción que se ve en la difícil coyuntura de tener que cohabitar con el texto y los diálogos originales, la invisibilidad sistemática de la figura del traductor y los aspectos legislativos y económicos que rigen esta profesión.

Resumen: Being able to propose a taxonomy of translation techniques has been a long-standing aspiration of translation theorists. By building on previous proposals, this paper presents the HispaTAV typology of translation techniques (ToT), a new list specifically designed for subtitling trainees. The aim of the proposal is to increase students’ awareness of the variety of possible solutions to translate segments of the source text, and to promote creativity, a key factor in the development of translator competence. The proposal has been presented to current translation students, who have provided feedback in terms of its usability for learning purposes.

Resumen: Este libro ofrece una visión de conjunto de las técnicas que se utilizan con mayor frecuencia en el mundo de la subtitulación, las analiza críticamente y propone reglas de trabajo para aquellos que se adentran por primera vez en un campo en el que las restricciones espacio-temporales son particularmente severas, y obligan al que se inicia en la práctica de la disciplina a cambios metodológicos igual de severos a la hora de encarar el proceso de traducción. La obra describe también un amplio abanico de programas informáticos que ayudan al traductor en su tarea. Por último, presenta un sistema de trabajo mediante un software específico de subtitulación orientado a la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la técnica: LRN-2sub.

Resumen: This volume explores the expansion of audiovisual translation studies and practices within European institutions, universities and businesses. The wide variety of contributions from researchers and practitioners from different countries and backgrounds reflects the rapid pace and complex nature of this expansion. Resumen: Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling is an introductory textbook which provides a solid overview of the world of subtitling. Based on sound research and first-hand experience in the field, the book focuses on generally accepted practice but identifies current points of contention, takes regional and medium-bound variants into consideration, and traces new developments that may have an influence on the evolution of the profession. The individual chapters cover the rules of good subtitling practice, the linguistic and semiotic dimensions of subtitling, the professional environment, technical considerations, and key concepts and conventions, providing access to the core skills and knowledge needed to subtitle for television, cinema and DVD. Also included are graded exercises covering core skills. While the working language of the book is English, an accompanying DVD contains sample film material in Dutch, English, French, Italian and Spanish, as well as a range of dialogue lists and a key to some of the exercises. The DVD also includes WinCAPS, SysMedia's professional subtitling preparation software package.

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy. This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more 'niche' aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.
