Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. Resumen: Desde mediados del siglo XX, la actividad traductora ha experimentado una espectacular transformación, caracterizada sobre todo por el auge que ha cobrado la traducción técnica como principal especialidad dentro del mercado profesional. Pues bien, a pesar de que la demanda de traducción de textos técnicos sigue creciendo un ritmo acelerado, hasta la fecha prácticamente no se ha editado ningún trabajo sobre el tema. Por ello, se hacía necesario ofrecer una visión actualizada de este tipo de traducción por medio de una obra que se centrara ante todo en el marco teórico-metodológico de la práctica profesional. En este libro se analizan los principales factores que entran en juego al traducir textos técnicos. Por ello se examina a fondo, entre otros, el concepto de género, con todas las implicaciones que éste comporta para la práctica profesional de la traducción. Además, se clasifican y presentan los géneros más habituales en el quehacer diario del traductor técnico (patentes, normas, manuales de instrucciones...), y s aportan abundantes ejemplos en español y en alemán. En la segunda parte de la obra se realiza un análisis detallado del género manual de instrucciones, y se extraen conclusiones relacionadas con su traducción. Por último, se incluye una extensión bibliografía sobre la traducción técnica, clasificada por temas, que resulta de gra utilidad tanto para abordar trabajos de investigación en este campo, como para ampliar información sobre aspectos concretos de esta especialidad.

Resumen: Part 1 of the study presents the theoretical framework on which the model is based, and surveys the various concepts of translation theory and text linguistics. Part 2 describes the role and scope of source-text analysis in the translation process and explains why the model is relevant to translation. Part 3 presents a detailed study of the extratextual and intratextual factors and their interaction in the text, using numerous examples from all areas of professional translation. Resumen: La especulación, el análisis y las evaluaciones de las hipótesis que se suceden en los estudios sobre la traducción contribuyen a hacer de ésta una "interdiciplina", fascinante en sí misma e instructiva para otros campos, por cuanto todo conocimiento se desarrolla con el concurso de diversas lenguas. Aunque el proceso de traducción de un texto hasta llegar a sus lectores es con frecuencia complejo y sólo parcialmente rastreable, sabemos que de hecho la tranferencia se produce. The following chapters are the first of a series of "Paragrahs on Translations" which I began contibuting once every two months to The Linguist, the journal of the Institute of Linguists, in September 1989, and which I am likely to continue as long as I go on teaching. The format of sections and paragraphs appeals to me, since it gives me the freedom (and indeed the ́space ́!) to discuss any topic as succinctly as I like. I think that more or less self-contained paragraphs have an impact that is missing in chapters of prescribed length. Resumen: En 1972 J. S. Holmes dibujaba el "mapa" de una disciplina que denominó Estudios de Traducción. El "mapa" de Holmes organiza la disciplina en tres ramas: la teórica, que explica y predice los fenómenos de traducción, la descriptiva, que recoge y sistematiza los fenómenos empíricos objeto de estudio, además de observar y analizar las regularidades del comportamiento traductor, y la aplicada, que se ocupa de la elaboración de materiales y herramientas que faciliten la labor de traducir o las actividades relacionadas con ellas. En este "mapa" el papel de la rama descriptiva es vital, ya que sobre ella descansan tanto la posibilidad de formular una teoría originada en la práctica de la traducción como las aplicaciones que de ella se deriven. En torno a los Estudios Descriptivos de Traducción (EDT) se articulan la teoría y las aplicaciones, cuya propia existencia depende de ellos. Al hablar de los EDT nos referimos con frecuencia a hechos empíricos, constatables, a la realidad que existe frente a la especulación. Los EDT son el puente entre la teoría y la práctica, el punto de partida necesario hacia los estudios aplicados, y constituyen un camino de ida y vuelta entre la práctica real y la que los traductores producirán en el futuro. Son sin duda una potente metodología que ha permitido secuenciar los distintos pasos de la investigación básica en Estudios de Traducción, todo un "protocolo" de actuación investigadora.
