Resumen: Arising from cultural anthropology in the late 1980s and early 1990s, postcolonial translation theory is based on the observation that translation has often served as an important channel of empire. Douglas Robinson begins with a general presentation of postcolonial theory, examines current theories of the power differentials that control what gets translated and how, and traces the historical development of postcolonial thought about translation. He also explores the negative and positive impact of translation in the postcolonial context, reviewing various critiques of postcolonial translation theory and providing a glossary of key words. Resumen: The theory identifies the mental and cognitive processes involved in both oral and written translation: understanding the text, deverbalizing its language, re-expressing sense. For the purposes of translation, languages are a means of transmitting sense, they are not to be translated as such. Although translation involves the use of correspondences, translators generally set up equivalence between text segments. The synecdochic nature of both languages and texts, a phenomenon discussed in the book, explains why translation is possible across language differences. The many practical problems faced by translators, the difference between translation exercises used as a language teaching tool and professional translation, translating into a foreign language, and machine translation as compared to human translation are also discussed.

Resumen: Qu'est-ce que traduire? Pour les profanes, c'est trouver des correspondances dans une autre langue. Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: Plus l'on traduit, et plus on écrit sur la traduction. II n'est pas de jour sans que paraissent de nouveaux ouvrages. Il s'agit de montrer que la démarche du bom traducteur est fondamentalement la même, quelles que soient les langues et quel soit le texte en cause. La recherche du sens et sa réexpression sont le dénominateur commun à toutes les traductions. Nouvelle édition.

Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Durante mucho tiempo y con demasiada frecuencia relegada en el desarrollo de las lenguas, la traducción era considerada como un pasaje de palabras o de frases de un idioma a palabras o frases de otro. Ahora bien, el camino que lleva a la correcta traducción supone la interpretación de los textos y recurrir a conocimientos extralingüísticos. El objetivo es que las ideas desarrolladas en este libro no sean solo entendidas en el plano teórico sino que tengan consecuencias en el modo de enseñar la traducción y, por consiguiente, en su práctica. La traducción, del original francés, fue realizada por la Trad. Públ. Beatriz Rodriguez, ex presidenta del CTPCBA y actual directora de la Carrera de Traductor Público de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Resumen: This volume is a compendium of PACTE Group's experimental research in Translation Competence since 1997. The book is organised in four main parts and also includes eight appendices and a glossary. Part I presents the conceptual and methodological framework of PACTE's Translation Competence research design. Part II focuses on the methodological aspects of the research design and its development: exploratory tests and pilot studies carried out; experiment design; characteristics of the sample population; procedures of data collection and analysis. Part III presents the results obtained in the experiment related to: the Acceptability of the translations produced in the experiment and the six dependent variables of study (Knowledge of Translation; Translation Project; Identification and Solution of Translation Problems; Decision-making; Efficacy of the Translation Process; Use of Instrumental Resources); this part also includes a corpus analysis of the translations. Part IV analyses the translators who were ranked highest in the experiment and goes on to present final conclusions as well as PACTE's perspectives in the field of Translation Competence research.
