Resumen: In the early pos-war decades, Translation Studies was considered to be a subdivisi'on of comparative literature or of applied linguistics, depending on the approach of the scholar concerned. Since the mid-1980s it has gained recognition as an independent discipline in its own right - or, as one might more aptly put it, given the large number of subjects with which it overlaps, an interdiscipline. This was the approach adopted for the international congress held in September 1992 at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Vienna to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its foundation. This volume contains a selection of the 163 papers read at the Congress on topics varying from the medieval translator and cultural pluralism to computational tools and the process of simultaneous interpretation.

Resumen: El presente volumen tiene por finalidad mostrar a la comunidad científica una nueva perspectiva en los estudios de traducción. La división en dos bloques del mismo corresponde a criterios metodológicos. Resumen: "La tentación de publicar en forma de libro textos originalmente concebidos para ser leídos o, mejor, hablados es casi irresistible. Lo que no deja de ser curioso en unos tiempos en que todos nos lamentamos de la desaparición del libro tal como lo conocimos. No pretendo ser una excepción. Todos los textos que siguen fueron escritos para ser pronunciados y lo fueron efectivamente, en distintos lugares, aunque a veces se convirtieran luego (acompañados de notas eruditas) en artículos. Algunos han sido traducidos a otros idiomas, otros pueden encontrarse fácilmente en Internet, donde flotan de forma autorizada o no. En su mayoría andan por revistas varias, en ocasiones de acceso difícil. Me ha parecido que podrían tener interés para quienes, traductores o no, se interesan por la traducción. No contienen secretos para traducir ni nada que sea muy excepcional. Al releerlos, he encontrado reiteraciones que he tratado de eliminar, aunque seguramente lo que uno repite es lo que más firmemente cree. Y debo hacer una advertencia: en ocasiones hay frases, ideas, que no recuerdo si son mías. Solo que un día las hice mías". Miguel Sáenz.

Resumen: Los días 25, 26 y 27 de octubre de 2012, en el Campus de San Vicente del Raspeig de la <Universidad de Alicante> celebramos el XIII Simposio Iberoamericano de Terminología, <RITerm 2012>, con el título ''<Terminología, traducción y TIC: interacción social y trabajo colaborativo para la construcción y difusión del conocimiento>''. La colaboración entre el Instituto Interuniversitario de <Lenguas Modernas Aplicadas> (<IULMA>) y la <Red Iberoamericana de Terminología> culminó con la integración del Instituto y la Red como convocantes del mencionado Simposio. El día 24 se celebraron además dos talleres previos sobre trabajo colaborativo y traducción audiovisual. El título que en esta ocasión tiene el Simposio obedecía a los grandes cambios de los que está siendo partícipe la sociedad actual, cambios que nos han llevado a una nueva forma de interrelacionarnos unos con otros, de crear conocimiento y, en definitiva, de llevar a cabo nuestras profesiones. En efecto, las nuevas Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) están teniendo un gran impacto sobre el modo de construir y difundir el conocimiento en la sociedad en general, pero también, y más específicamente, en los modos de trabajo, de investigación y de interrelación social tanto en terminología como en traducción. Por ello, además de los objetivos que nos marcamos para este evento de carácter internacional, los esfuerzos del mismo se centraron en aunar durante su realización a la comunidad profesional y académica de las áreas de conocimiento involucradas con el fin de construir y difundir conocimiento en torno a nuevos conceptos teóricos y aplicados que se plantean por el impacto de las TIC y de la web 2.0 (o web social) en las disciplinas de terminología y traducción.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. Resumen: In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.
