Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories, together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist approaches.

Resumen: La especulación, el análisis y las evaluaciones de las hipótesis que se suceden en los estudios sobre la traducción contribuyen a hacer de ésta una "interdiciplina", fascinante en sí misma e instructiva para otros campos, por cuanto todo conocimiento se desarrolla con el concurso de diversas lenguas. Aunque el proceso de traducción de un texto hasta llegar a sus lectores es con frecuencia complejo y sólo parcialmente rastreable, sabemos que de hecho la tranferencia se produce. Por encima de todo, este trabajo trata de ser en su descripción evaluadora, ofreciendo a sus lectores una crítica bien informada de la traducción y animando a los traductores a preservar en el empeño. Este viaje "iniciatívo" a lo largo de la historia y entre los conceptos, tiene un objetivo modesto- se inscribe dentro del marco del mundo occidental- y ambicioso, como prueba su extensa y exhaustiva bibliografía. Y por ello, los lectores no sólo sacarán un buen provecho de esta obra, sino que además la disfrutarán, y les estimulará a reflexionar en torno a la traducción, estrechando, por añadidura, sus lazos de interés por otras disciplinas.

Resumen: Introduction. The following chapters are the first of a series of "Paragrahs on Translations" which I began contibuting once every two months to The Linguist, the journal of the Institute of Linguists, in September 1989, and which I am likely to continue as long as I go on teaching. The format of sections and paragraphs appeals to me, since it gives me the freedom (and indeed the ́space ́!) to discuss any topic as succinctly as I like. I think that more or less self-contained paragraphs have an impact that is missing in chapters of prescribed length. I have written these "Paragraphs" for various groups of readers: firt for translators, students and teachers of translation, and even for translation theorists; secondly for language teachers, linguistis and educationalists, thirdly for public administrators, politicians, directors of townhalls, airlines, hospitals, museums, theatres, art galleries, etc. and most importantly for the general and educated reader, who is continuously and increasingly affected by translation in the strest, in the supermarkets, in public buildongs, in planes and trains, in information and tourist offices, to an extent tha has never occurred before..."
