Resumen: Es un manual de métodos de traducción del inglés al español y viceversa, dirigido a estudiantes de lenguas y traductores. Sus autores explican que el arte de traducir no es lo mismo que el saber emplear un buen diccionario, sino que se trata de comunicar las idea y el significado del original utilizando todos los recursos de idioma, una tarea ardua que requiere sensibilidad y práctica. En esta obra hay una gran variedad de párrafos literarios, técnicos y de la prensa. Fragmentos paralelos en inglés y español y otros que tratan de temas semejantes muestran cómo el traductor experto resuelve ciertos problemas técnicos y de intepretación. Hay un apéndice que subraya puntos difíciles de gramática y de estilo, y notas que sirven de guía al lector. Se incluyen también varios ejercicios después de cada pasaje, que ofrecen muchas oportunidades para la práctica del arte de traducir. Ethel Brinton es licenciada de la Universidad de Harvard, ha sido profesora de inglés en Canadá y actualmente reside en México. Eva Cruz es profesora de inglés y de traducción en la Universidad Autónoma de México. Raúl Ortiz y Ortiz es catedrático de Historia del Arte y de Literatura en la Universidad Nacional de México.

Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories, together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist approaches.

Resumen: En nuestra disciplina se suele asimilar la investigación mediante el método científico a la investigación matemática, estadística, cuantitativa y exacta, a la que una investigación "natural" se opone diametralmente.
