Resumen: Ouvert sur divers modes d'expression écrite de la langue anglaise (prose romanesque et écriture journalistique d'époques, de thématiques et de registres variés), cet ouvrage se veut pour l'essentiel axé sur la méthodologie et la pratique, au sens le plus large possible, de la traduction et du commentaire qui lui est inévitablement associé. Il comporte deux volets : une courte partie introductive, illustrée de nombreux exemples, où sont abordés les principaux enjeux esthétiques et communicatifs de la traduction ; un éventail de textes littéraires et journalistiques pour lesquels sont proposés, selon les trois phases suggérées par la seconde partie du titre (1. Lire / 2. Traduire / 3. Commenter), une traduction ainsi que des commentaires concernant l'ensemble du texte original et certains passages clés de la traduction.

Resumen: Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators' priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

Resumen: Nobody can deny the overwhelming presence of the media all around us in the 21st century. Due to their power and diversity, it is virtually impossible to avoid them. So why not harnessing all that powerful influence to profit from the variety they offer in favor of higher education? That was our question last year when we decided to devise a renewal proposal (Multimedia Approach to the Teaching of Journalistic Translation) for the university chair that I have recently become part of Journalistic Translation at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina. Compared to other courses of our Translation training program, such as Scientific, Commercial, and Legal Translation, Journalistic Translation is probably one of the most complex and kaleidoscopic as this area comprises a wide range of topics, which have been organized and developed in a number of different genres. The translator's background knowledge is paramount at this stage. A good translator formation requires "theoretical learning and practical training" (Alves 2001: 47). But that is just a small part of the picture. Nowadays, the role of translators as cultural mediators imposes new and formidable challenges. On this matter, Snell-Hornby (1988) observes: "Knowledge of the world is a prerequisite for translation, the profile of our envisaged professional translator becomes bolder: he or she is not only a bilingual but also a bicultural (if not multicultural) specialist".

Resumen: Estoy aquí para aportar a este encuentro una mirada sobre lo que es el trabajo diario de un traductor en un medio gráfico. No soy una intelectual ni una académica (a diferencia de las prestigiosas compañeras de mesa) simplemente puedo aportar mi experiencia de años de trabajo en un diario. El trabajo en un diario tiene, más que cualquier otra cosa, una característica que no se da en otros ámbitos y que es la velocidad. Puede parecer algo obvio tal vez, pero no es un dato menor, porque quiere decir que el traductor de diario trabaja condicionado de forma permanente por una presión, la del reloj. Debe ser preciso, claro y veloz.
