Resumen: Translation Studies presents an integrated concept based on the theory and practice of translation. The author adapts linguistic approaches and methods in such a way that they may be usefully employed in the theory, practice, and analysis of literary translation. The author develops a more cultural approach through text analysis and cross-cultural communication studies. The book is a contribution to the development of translation studies as a discipline in its own right.

Resumen: Las relaciones de los lingüistas con los estudios de traducción, sobre todo en lo que a traducción literaria se refiere, no siempre han estado libres de fricciones y malentendidos. Existen, sin embargo, enfoques y métodos que a partir de la lingüística se pueden aplicar a la traducción de modo satisfactorio, al igual que ciertos conceptos lingüísticos tienen aplicación en la traducción literaria. Algunos de estos planteamientos y métodos figuran en este libro y aspiran a llenar el vacío entre dos conceptos que no tienen por qué ser incompatibles: la traducción literaria y la lingüística.

Resumen: El libro se asienta sobre dos claros principios. El primero sostiene que las teorías traductológicas son valiosas herramientas para fomentar y consolidar el aprendizaje de los alumnos en la clase de traducción. El segundo defiende que la enseñanza/aprendizaje de la tarea de traducir se beneficia de un alejamiento de dicotomías simplificadoras e integrismos excluyentes y, al mismo tiempo, propone que el camino más enriquecedor para trasladar conocimientos y vivencias sobre la práctica traductora es siempre crítico, integrador e híbrido.

Resumen: The detachment of theory from practice has been criticized by translating practitioners; yet little improvement has been made. This book addresses the problem by reinvestigating the system of translation. Based on Daoist dialectics, the author introduces a dual system: translation theory and translating theory. The former concentrates on the abstract and macro aspects while the latter on the practical and micro ones. In professional translating, the depth of knowledge plays a crucial role. The book dedicates a whole chapter on their relationship. In order to demystify the black box of the translating process, a cognitive investigation is carried out. A paradigm called FAST (fluency, accuracy, speed and tradesmanship) is proposed for professional translating practice. The second half of the book tackles issues related to translating of technical and legal documents, as well as menus and poetry. The book is of an interdisciplinary nature, targeting readers who are interested in translation and translating, cognitive linguistics, formulaic language theory, communication studies, knowledge studies, experience and expertise studies, information theory, and intercultural studies.
