Resumen: Culture-bound elements, such as proper names and food items, not only place the story of a book in a specific culture and period of time, but also imply certain values and create an ambience. These elements also have an effect on how the reader identifies with the story and characters. Thus, it is important to find the most appropriate strategy to translate such elements. This paper considers the Finnish translation (1949) of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1908), a multi-layered and allusive children's book set in Edwardian England, and some other children's tales translated into Finnish around the same era. The translation of The Wind in the Willows dates back to a period of time when British culture was not yet well known in Finland. The paper argues that certain inconsistencies in the translation of culture-bound elements in the book make it difficult for target text readers to understand its layers of meaning and to identify with the characters. Similar inconsistencies in the translation of culture-bound elements are found in other Finnish translations of children's books from the same period. The findings may be explained by a limited knowledge of foreign cultures in post-war Finland.

Resumen: Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by the siblings Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, intended "for the use of young persons" while retaining as much Shakespearean language as possible. Mary Lamb was responsible for retelling the comedies and Charles the tragedies. They omitted the more complex historical tales, including all Roman plays, and modified those they chose to retell in a manner sensitive to the needs of young children, but without resorting to actual censoring. However, subplots and sexual references were removed.

Lawrence's own life, Sons and Lovers (1913) tells the story of young Paul Morel, son of the troubled union of an educated, upwardly mobile mother and an ill-tempered, unlettered coal miner father who speaks in a broad dialect. Although in later life Lawrence regretted his brutal portrait of his father, the hero of the novel is most definitely his mother's boy, becoming increasingly dissatisfied with his mean, impoverished home in a Nottinghamshire coal town. He is drawn to a young woman named Miriam (based on Lawrence's old flame Jessie Chambers), with whom he reads poetry and speaks French; his voracious mother fears that Paul's attraction to Miriam will jeopardize her own relationship with him, and does everything she can to come between them. Paul then begins an affair with Clara, a married woman and a feminist. In the end, Paul finds the resolution to reject his background for good; knowing he must forget both Miriam and Clara, he sets out with renewed resolution on a quest for a life of his own. Unique for its sexual frankness and working-class background, Sons and Lovers is Lawrence's first major achievement, and a groundbreaking step forward in the history of English realistic fiction.

Resumen: Even in Bradley's own day there were dissenting voices; but the very ambiguity in Bradley's position extended his appeal. He regarded the tragic characters as embodiments of the qualities that will always command the respect and admiration of men, yet at the same time he seemed to find a formula that justified the scheme of things and absolved the cosmos from the charges that Huxley and others were bringing against it. In addition to the careful, learned and sympathetic analysis he gave to every author he discussed, there was the additional attraction, for those generations that were disturbed by the implications of biblical and scientific criticism, of finding in Bradley what seemed, in Arnold's words, a stay in an age of religious doubts and questionings.
