This paper explores the translation procedures used by english translators when they tackle chinese empty words. To begin with an empty words list produced by Wang (1999) was adopted as the reference. Following this, suitable translations in the first sicty three issues of renditions were collectes and their corresponding source texts obtained from either the internet of libraries. Eventually, sixty two englisch texts and sicty two of their source texts were compiled into a parallel corpus on ParaConc.Afterwards, examples extracted from this corpus were analysed and classfied into different procedure categories on the basis of former scholars' definitions and my own ideas. Finally, eight translation procedures were identified, they are: match, paraphrase, shared match, implicitation, amplification, grammatical vonveyance, borrowing adn omission.
