Resumen: Dans cette contribution, nous nous proposons de passer en revue les réflexions sur les techniques de traduction selon Marie de Gournay, telles qu’elle les exprime dans son traité Lettre à Monseigneur de Gelas, paru en 1626. Les réflexions de cette femme érudite, passionnantes à tout point de vue, sont peu connues, sinon oubliées, et donc loin d’être appréciées à leur juste valeur, en dépit des nombreuses recherches consacrées à ce sujet. Nous allons nous interroger sur ce qu’ont été les prémices de la traduction en France et sur l’apport fourni aux techniques de traduction par Marie de Gournay

Resumen: La complejidad de conceptuar el término "traducción" y la dificultad para definirlo nos lleva a realizar un análisis histórico para poder así observar cómo la "traducción" ha sido comprendida y practicada en las sociedades modernas. La importancia ético-política de la traducción está asociada con la construcción, transformación o interrupción (discontinuidad, quiebre) de las relaciones y comprende además obligaciones morales por parte del emisor como del receptor. La representación de la traducción produce efectos socioculturales y sirve como herramienta mediante la cual los individuos imaginan su relación como una determinada comunidad nacional o étnica e internacional.

Se trata sin embargo de una escuela en muchos casos pionera e innovadora, de un elevado rigor científico y que complementa las corrientes con las que está más familiarizado el lingüista occidental.

Resumen: The essence of the act of translating has implied, from early times, dealing with different and often extreme approaches. Resumen: Between an original text and its translation, there is a gap which the translator traverses alone. Ben Belitt, a poet and scholar widely acclaimed for his translation of poetry from Spanish of Alberti, Machado, García Lorca, Borges, Jose Guillén and Pablo Neruda, has mapped out some of the terrain which divides and unifies the lenguages of the world and compels the translator's search for his function. In the sense that it is the attempt of a distinguished translator to "come to cases" with the theory and practice of his craft in the on-going drift of choice and decisions, this is a log-book, as well as a casebook on translation.

Resumen: Georges Bastin establece en este artículo las diferencias entre los conceptos de traducción y adaptación ya que reconoce que ambos han sido tradicionalmente confundidos en función de las relaciones evidentes que existen entre ellos. Luego de llevar a cabo una revisión histórica de la noción de "adaptación", presenta los lineamientos generales que le permiten proponer su definición autónoma y, a partir de ella, dos distinciones que considera fundamentales: la adaptación puntual y la adaptación global.

Resumen: This paper investigates the question of whether the classifications and general descriptions of irony, as true as they may seem, are plausible enough for enquiries into areas such as translation. The generic and philosophical analysis criteria provided by the literary criticism, literary theory and pragmatic approaches hover around broad interpretive models of irony. These criteria are impractical for the analysis of irony for translation purposes, although the translation of irony relies essentially on interpretation and creative reformulation. This is particularly the case when dealing with typologically distant languages, such as Arabic and English, in a specific text-type. To be able to "work" with ironic texts there is a need for a more objective and applicable approach, which considers the identification of formal and rhetorical devices of ironic texts, hence a linguistic analysis that explains the communicative function of these devices at both the utterance and discourse structure levels

Resumen: The functionalist theory to translations is the result of the reorientation of mainstream translation practice towards the business environment. Globalization has lead to the rise of multinational corporations which function efficiently only when communication and cultural barriers are aided. Translation scholars (Christiane Nord, Hans Vermeer, Katharina Reiss) as well as translation practitioners (Justa Holz-Mänttäri) have identified the need to re-label the translator as an 'intercultural expert' who facilitates the exchange of information in view of an operative/ lucrative result. As many of the above-mentioned corporations are domain-oriented, it follows that the texts for translation are often domain-specific. In this study, we intend to verify whether the functionalist theory has applicability for domain-specific translations and to what extent the functionalist model may be used. Resumen: The detachment of theory from practice has been criticized by translating practitioners; yet little improvement has been made. This book addresses the problem by reinvestigating the system of translation. Based on Daoist dialectics, the author introduces a dual system: translation theory and translating theory. The former concentrates on the abstract and macro aspects while the latter on the practical and micro ones. In professional translating, the depth of knowledge plays a crucial role. The book dedicates a whole chapter on their relationship. In order to demystify the black box of the translating process, a cognitive investigation is carried out. A paradigm called FAST (fluency, accuracy, speed and tradesmanship) is proposed for professional translating practice. The second half of the book tackles issues related to translating of technical and legal documents, as well as menus and poetry. The book is of an interdisciplinary nature, targeting readers who are interested in translation and translating, cognitive linguistics, formulaic language theory, communication studies, knowledge studies, experience and expertise studies, information theory, and intercultural studies.

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy. This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more 'niche' aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.

Resumen: Borges' works deconstruct the time lag conceived in the binaries such as the work's production vs. its criticism, the original text vs. its translation, the source text vs. the derivative nature of the target text, and reality vs. fiction. Benjamin, as Borges' near contemporary, echoes rather the same idea in his post-Nietzschean philosophy of translation. Focusing on the similarities between the views of Benjamin on translation and those of Borges as reflected in his stories as well as his essays, particularly in his well-received essay on translations of Thousand and One Nights and in his meta-fictional short story 'Pierre Menard': Author of the Quixote, this paper aims at bringing the two scholars together in the context of literary translation studies in the postmodern era, where intersemiotic and intertextual collage (in Eco's terminology) and mimicry bear witness to the claim that translation, like other intertextual enterprises, is neither inferior to the other intertextual undertakings such as writing, nor is it detached from language as post-structurally conceived. Furthermore, another core objective of this study is to show how Borges' 'Menard' heralds and truly represents the translation theories built upon the underlying assumptions of deconstructionism since the 1980s. It is concluded that as far as postmodern and poststructuralist theories are concerned, both Borges' and Benjamin's works had predicted the future of literary and translation theories in which the decisive role of translation and translator in the construction of culture and identities cannot be denied.

Resumen: Taking Turkey's case as a basis, the current study focuses on the retranslation practice with an aim to discuss plagiaristic forms of retranslation which may create serious repercussions in the field of translation such as violating translators' copyrights, complicating the issue of translator's voice, producing defective cultural artifacts and affecting culture in general negatively. The study tries to outline and exemplify commonly-accepted impetuses for retranslation and inquire the validity of the rationale for the retranslations with a particular focus on Turkey. For our analysis, we used a total of 40 classical books distributed by a national newspaper as a promotional campaign. Following a brief discussion on voice in translation, an overview of publishing and retranslation practices in Turkey; this study presents guidelines for a more comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of plagiarism in retranslation and translation in general. The analyses of both qualitative and quantitative data derived from the sample of classical books showed that the books were just reproduction rather than retranslation or translation at all. The article concludes with a discussion on the possible impact of fake retranslations on translation practice and culture in general and calls for further empirical studies to prevent plagiarism in translation.

Resumen: Jorge Luis Borges is renowned not only as one of the masters of the Spanish letters in the twentieth century, but also as a major figure in world literature. He was a prolific author, whose vast production has been the subject of many treatises and discussions that, for the most part, focus on his literary, philosophical, aesthetic and ideological preoccupations. There is, however, a crucial aspect of his work (closely related to all these concerns) that has received little scholarly attention until recent times: translation. For Borges, writing, reading and translating were intimately interconnected and the way in which he conceptualised all three acts led him to intuit and, in some cases, outline some of the principles that would become the nucleus of twentiethcentury translation theory. This paper examines Jorge Luis Borges's understanding of translation (which, for him, was an instinct, even a compulsion) with reference to theories that were developed in subsequent years. The aim is to show how Borges anticipated many of the notions that would become central to translation scholarship. In order to achieve this, links will be established between three critical essays by Borges ("Las dos maneras de traducir", "Las versiones homéricas" and "Los traductores de las 1001 Noches") and selected pieces of his fiction, on the one hand, and translation theories, on the other.
