Resumen: One of the crucial questions in foreign language acquisition reseach concerns the role played by interference from native language rules, patterns and usage in accounting for learners errors in the target language. It is true that first language knowledge affects the acquisition of a new linguistic system, and many of the areas of difficulty faced and solutions attempted during second language development can be predicted by a contrastive analysis of the two systems.

Resumen: Acclaimed as one of the most important Latin American novels in recent decades, Artificial Respiration is a stunning introduction for English readers to the fiction of Ricardo Piglia. Published in Argentina in 1981, it was written at a time when thousands of Argentine citizens "disappeared" during the governments attempt to create an authoritarian state. In part a reflection on one of the most repressive and tragic times in Argentine history, this is one of those rare works of fiction in which multiple philosophical, political, and narrative dimensions are all powerfully and equally matched. As a prize winning detective novel, Artificial Respiration reaches through many levels of mystery to explore the forces that have been at play in Argentina throughout its violent history. The narrator, a writer named Renzi, begins to look for an uncle who has vanished, a man he knows only through a web of contradictory family stories and an exchange of letters. Through these letters he learns about his uncles research into the life of Enrique Ossario, secretary to the 19th-century Argentine dictator Rosas and spy for the dictators enemy. As Renzis search leads further into his uncles work and to conversations with his literary and chess-playing friends, the reader is led by Piglia to consider the nature of Argentine identity, its literature and history, and its relation, for example, to Europe, exile, and democracy. Finally, and made most vividly appreciable by the retelling of a story in which Kafka meets Hitler, it is the encounter between literature and history that is explored.

Resumen: En este artículo analizaremos, desde los estudios fraseológicos relacionados con la traducción, los elementos culturales que se activan en la mente del traductor en el momento de establecer las correspondencias de las unidades fraseológicas. Para realizar este estudio, hemos recopilado 100 expresiones fraseológicas del libro "Cien años de soledad", del escritor colombiano Gabriel García Márquez. Se trata de locuciones verbales que, la mayoría de las veces, se pueden reemplazar por un verbo con n significado similar. Suponemos que una unidad fraseológica debe ser traducida por otra de igual valor. Sin embargo, las diferencias culturales condicionan la expresión lingüística. Por lo tanto, nuestra primicia inicial parte de la base de que la equivalencia depende de la selección del referente cultural que hace el traductor. Lo anterior nos lleva a plantearnos los siguientes interrogantes: Qué hace el traductor cuando no encuentra en su cultura le referente adecuado? Qué conocimiento cultural se activa en la interpretación de las expresiones fraseológicas?

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. Resumen: La base léxica berry y sus compuestos presentan una serie de particularidades tanto en relación a la propia lengua inglesa como en relación a sus equivalentes en portugués y español. Es posible afirmar que las particularidades de berry y sus compuestos constituyen un desafío tanto para la lexicografía monolingüe como para la bilingüe. El objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar un panorama de la complejidad lexicológica de berry y sus compuestos, así como de las implicaciones de esta complejidad tanto para la lexicografía monolingüe como para la bilingüe. Para el análisis de esta familia léxica, emplearemos distinciones metodológicas tales como intensión y extensión, semasiología y onomasiología, principios de equivalencia, etc. Nuestros trabajos preliminares con este mismo tema demuestran que la aplicación consecuente de distinciones lexicológicas claras aplicadas a la familia léxica de berry ayudarían a mejorar sensiblemente tanto las definiciones en los diccionarios monolingües como los equivalentes presentes en los bilingües. Nunca está de más recordar que el traductor busca ayuda en ambos tipos de diccionarios.
