One of the crucial questions in foreign language acquisition reseach concerns the role played by interference from native language rules, patterns and usage in accounting for learners errors in the target language. It is true that first language knowledge affects the acquisition of a new linguistic system, and many of the areas of difficulty faced and solutions attempted during second language development can be predicted by a contrastive analysis of the two systems.
