Resumen: Sigue priloferando en nuestro medio la propuesta de emprender una cruzada contra "el deterioro de nuestra lengua" y contra el acoso constante del que es objeto por parte del inglés. Se dice que el mayor peligro que acecha al españo contemporáneo es la abrumadora cantidad de anglicismos que "desvirtúan" el verdadero significado de los vocablos castizos. Se puede hablar de pureza de la lengua, o desde que perspectiva se juzgan las "impurezas nocivas"? Tratar a la lengua con amor entrañable no significa el culto a las formas en menoscabo de las necesidades expresivas de los hablantes. Es menester explorar este fenómeno a la luz de las investigaciones lingüisticas de nuestro tiempo.

Resumen: Discourse analysis has drawn people's attention to micro levels in the discourse. This means that some subtle issues that were ignored in the past may carry with them some implicit meanings when looked at in the context. In this regard, topicality in Chinese usually indicates definiteness, whereas this definiteness is signaled by articles, pronouns in English texts. The difference between the two systems can result in problems in translation if not handled properly. Therefore it should be stressed that the management of theme-rheme structures should be dealt with much care from micro text levels, along with an interpretation of the macro intention of the text, so that the translation process should be highlighted. By incorporating the model of discourse analysis, the interaction between the original and translation can be realized.

Resumen: El inglés jurídico es un lenguaje bastante difícil. Se ha tratado de actualizar este lenguaje especializado, es decir, adaptar el inglés jurídico formal al inglés estándar para que sea más accesible. En esta cuestión existen dos posturas claramente opuestas: la de aquellos que defienden la adaptación del inglés jurídico al inglés estándar y la de aquellos que desean mantener el lenguaje especializado arcaico sin actualización porque piensan que de ese modo "existen más garantías jurídicas".

Resumen: En nuestros días, el inglés es empleado como segunda lengua en interacciones entre hablantes de inglés no nativos provenientes de diferentes nacionalidades. El propósito de este trabajo es identificar desviaciones fonológicas que conllevan a un discurso fragmentado en interacciones entre ellos. Utilizando algunas de las características fonológicas que conforman la "Lingua Franca Core" propuesta por Jenkins (2000), estas desviaciones fueron clasificadas conforme a su impacto en la preservación de la mutua inteligibilidad. Participaron en este estudio catorce estudiantes internacionales de la Universidad de Concordia, en Montreal, Canadá. Estos alumnos fueron agrupados en pares para completar una tarea comunicativa en inglés, usando sus propios acentos regionales. Posteriormente, el entrevistador, junto con cada par, analizó cada una de las instancias en donde la comunicación había sido interrumpida. La tarea y la posterior entrevista fueron grabadas, transcriptas y analizadas. Los resultados demostraron que las desviaciones segmentales, conjuntamente con la incorrecta localización del acento tonal, resultaron ser los principales factores que afectaron la inteligibilidad entre los interlocutores.

Resumen: Since the early 2000s, a number of researchers have devoted themselves to the study of wine language and discourse, and especially the genre of wine tasting notes. They have analyzed various aspects of tasting notes: their rhetorical structure, their terminology, their use of metaphors, among others. What the vast majority of these studies have attempted to show is what features most tasting notes share; in other words, they have tried to identify what a typical tasting note is like. However, analysis of tasting notes corpora reveals a number of subtle differences not only from one language to another, but also within a given language. Therefore, in this paper we have attempted to identify and categorize these differences, using an English and Spanish comparable corpus, with each language corpus subdivided into three subcorpora, on the basis of the origin of the tasting notes. Differences in content categories, format and style, both in the subcorpora of each language and between the two languages, are analyzed and discussed. Overall, the English subcorpora reveal greater variation than the Spanish ones, with some features figuring prominently in a given subcorpus and being almost invisible in another.

Resumen: This book explores the intricacies of court interpreting through a thorough analysis of the authentic discourse of the English-speaking participants, the Spanish-speaking witnesses and the interpreters. Written by a practitioner, educator and researcher, the book presents the reader with real issues that most court interpreters face during their work and shows through the results of careful research studies that interpreter's choices can have varying degrees of influence on the triadic exchange. It also suggests solutions for common problems. Resumen: Los textos constitucionales presentan una evidente marca cultural, en tanto dan respuesta a las necesidades y aspiraciones axiológicas y organizativas de un Estado. En este trabajo se analizan, de manera contrastiva, fragmentos de textos constitucionales referidos a derechos fundamentales de Estados Unidos de América e Inglaterra, aprobados, en el primer caso, luego de la guerra de independencia (Constitución de 1787) y, en el segundo, en el contexto de la puja de poder entre la Corona y el Parlamento (Petition of Right1628 y Bill of Rights 1689). Luego de una breve presentación del contexto histórico-cultural de ambos textos, se estudian los diferentes modos en que se cristalizan las características propias del inglés jurídico de estos textos, como la presencia de elementos léxicos del latín y el francés, el registro formal y arcaizante, la redundancia expresiva, la proposiciones yuxtapuestas, etc., y los desafíos que estos rasgos implican en el proceso de traducción al español, ilustrados con ejemplos concretos. Finalmente, se examina el producto final en relación con la teoría de los actos de habla y el enfoque interaccionista, lo que permite analizar la permanencia de la intención de los constituyentes respecto del "hacer hacer", es decir, que el texto constitucional sea una fuente de inspiración para el compromiso y la acción ciudadana.

Resumen: (...) "Translators who specialize in legal materials are expected to have a sound knowledge of the law. What, exactly, is entailed by "a sound knowledge of the law" is a subject which has not been discussed in depth. Courses of study have sometines been set up without a clear idea of the needs of students of legal translation, and so we find law courses being taught by professors who ignore such needs. Based on a Spanish-language source text on Latin America, this lecture will explore the basics of economics, with emphasis on meaning and proper usage in English and Spanish. The main topics covered will be GDP growth, exchange rate regimes, the balance of trade, the fiscal deficit, unemployment and inflation. Background information and comparative statistics will be given to highlight the significance of the terms in the context of Latin America and its development. All the terms discussed will be listed in a Spanish-English glossary, with definitions specifically tailored to the needs of translators".

Resumen: El objetivo de la siguiente ponencia es evaluar la efectividad comunicativa de los resúmenes en inglés de artículos científicos escritos por hablantes nativos del español en dos revistas académicas indexadas en Colombia. Para lograrlo se seleccionaron 30 resúmenes escritos en inglés por hispanoparlantes pertenecientes a dos áreas científicas: 15 resúmenes de artículos publicados en una revista de psiquiatría y 15 de artículos en una revista de lenguaje y cultura. Se llevó a cabo un análisis de las características textuales, discursivas y terminológicas de los resúmenes, utilizando parámetros derivados de la intersección entre la lingüística textual y la terminología.
