Resumen: El libro sitúa la actividad de la traducción técnica en el entorno de la tecnología de la información. Las alternativas automáticas a la traducción humana afectan la profesión, su producto y la relación entre los traductores y sus clientes de manera decisiva. Esta obra presenta y analiza el proceso de la traducción en este escenario. El contexto en el que se estudia la traducción normalmente se amplía con el fin de re-examinar este proceso como parte de la producción interlingüística de textos y analiza cómo las nuevas herramientas afectan la producción de las traducciones.

Resumen: Qu'est-ce que traduire? Pour les profanes, c'est trouver des correspondances dans une autre langue. Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: Plus l'on traduit, et plus on écrit sur la traduction. II n'est pas de jour sans que paraissent de nouveaux ouvrages. Ce livre s'ajoute donc à une longue série de publications, mais la pratique, l'enseignement, la recherche m'ont convaincue de la nécessité d'ajouter à un ouvrage consacré au processus de la traduction et à son caractère universel indépendant de paires de langues ou de l'ouvre d'un auteur particulier. Il s'agit de montrer que la démarche du bom traducteur est fondamentalement la même, quelles que soient les langues et quel soit le texte en cause. La recherche du sens et sa réexpression sont le dénominateur commun à toutes les traductions. Nouvelle édition.

Resumen: Cognitive understandings of metaphor have led to significant advances in understandings of how to translate metaphor. Theoretical accounts of metaphor not as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, have provided useful tools for analysis and for translation work. This has usually happened at the level of individual metaphorical expressions, while the deeper lesson of cognitive theories has not been taken to heart by translation scholars, with a few signal exceptions. In this article we explore the potential of Conceptual Metaphor Theory for translating related metaphorical expressions within a specific text. We propose a model for understanding metaphor translation that takes as its unit of analysis not the individual metaphorical expression but the conceptual metaphor, of which the metaphorical expression is but a particular instantiation. It is this theoretical grounding that will allow us to propose a model for translating developed metaphors and related metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: The theory identifies the mental and cognitive processes involved in both oral and written translation: understanding the text, deverbalizing its language, re-expressing sense. For the purposes of translation, languages are a means of transmitting sense, they are not to be translated as such. Although translation involves the use of correspondences, translators generally set up equivalence between text segments. The synecdochic nature of both languages and texts, a phenomenon discussed in the book, explains why translation is possible across language differences. The many practical problems faced by translators, the difference between translation exercises used as a language teaching tool and professional translation, translating into a foreign language, and machine translation as compared to human translation are also discussed.

Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.
