Resumen: The Beauvoire series is a seven-volume series of scholarly, fully annotated english editions of Simone de Beauvoir ́s texts with introductions explaining their philosophical significance, forthcoming from the university of Illinois Press. Directed by Margaret A. Simone de Beauvoir, which have often been overlooked, misunderstood, poorly translated, or not translated at all into English. This article details some of the problems, challenges, and discoveries that I have encountered as one of the translators on the project.

Resumen: In an effort to improve the theoretical base and the methods by which interpreters are trained and evaluated, a parallel corpus of student interpreter renderings has been developed. One of the analyses performed on this corpus compares the types and frequency of errors of studen interpreters working into their non-native language to the errors made when working into their native language. Each error or shift is considered in terms of two factors: its effect on the conservation or distortion of the original message and the mechanics by which the error or shift occurs. Contrary to "conventional wisdom" about native-language bias in interpreted into their native or dominant language. Possible causes and remedies are presented.

Resumen: Many chemical terms and conceptsare encoutered by translators working in the biomedical field. Not all these terms are always crystal-clear. Because the author believes that a good understanding of the text to be translated is always helpful, the purpose of this presentation is to elucidate some of the basic as well as more obscure cencepts and potentially troublesome terminology. The discussion will center on selected topics from the fields of optical isomerism, drug chirality, drug characterization, pharmacokinetics, modified-release dosage forms, solution concentration, emulsions and others. The presentation should be of interest to collegues translating into and out of English.

Resumen: Project churn happens, even with the best planning, even in the best of companies, even with well-intentioned managers. When such repetitive, disruptive project change does occur, what is its impact to cost, schedule, and resources? How can one prepare for it? Can it be harnessed? This artícle presents a practical approach for quantifying and managing project churn. This i can help project managers plan for and even embrace change rather than just brace for it. The article describes how identifícation and control are often real responses to common of project churn. Moreover, it seeks to help language professionals to better set stakeholder expectations by factoring change into pricing, cost, and schedule planning.

Resumen: The author discusses Croatian language and English-Croatian translation from a historical and cultural relations viewpoint. Croating language is a South Slavic language with a 1,000-year heritage. It was written in Glago¡tic letters in its early history. Some 7 million people worldwide speak Croatian today. Problems and pitfalls in Croatian-English translation and interpretation are reviewed. Theilustrative examples cover diacritics, false cognates and short lists of the most common errors. Translator ́s resources reviewed include publications, institutions and organizations of interest. A snapshot of the current language dynamics shows an interplay between a) an influx of foreign mainly Anglicisms); b) efforts aimed at timely and proper construction of adequate iequivalents; and c) advocacy of a respectful preservation of the language's rich heritage. An initiative for the ATA accreditation program in South Slavic languages includes English-Croating language pair. Based on international standards and constitutional documents of all relevant countries, the initiative members have voted and recommended to the ATA that the obsolet term,'Serbo-Croatian', should be discontinued as a language designation. The Croatian language group has been formed. Eventual successful introduction of the Croatian-English language pair into the ATA acreditation program would contribute to a better knowledge of Croatian culture and language in the U.S. It would also lead to an interchange between language professionals and their organizations in the two countries. Finally, it would answer needs for increased volume and better quality of translation as Croatia nears entry into European Union and NATO.

Resumen: Representing a growing segment of the translation industry, software globalization (G11N) remains shrouded in mystery to many. What is Globalization? G11N ensures availability of a software product in languages besides the languages of origin, traditionally US English. It is driven by huge revenue opportunities outside the Anglophon world for software companies and translators alike. This presentation will introduce both the basic concept of globalization and how it involves the translator, in particular. In this paper we will describe the process from early desing and coding to release in the global marketplace.

Resumen: Haitan novelist, Dany Laferrière, writes in what we might call "standard" French, rarely inserting foreing terms (other than an occasional English word) in his prose. In "une maisonnette au flanc de cette montagne bleue" (from his one volume of short stories. La chair du maître), there is not a single overt expression in Haitian Kreyòl and yet the story (like several others) is steeped in peasant culture, including the traditions of Vodou. This study will examine several texts for the purpose of showing implicit elements of Vodou and peasant culture and some "easy" translatorial problems of non- concurrence between the standard french and English.

Resumen: Healthcare during the end of life is the most relevant, most talked about subject in clinical Medicine today. A 'death-defying' combination of the use of the hospital for final care, life-sustaining technological advances and the legal oversight of the medical decision-making process creates an assortment of end of life management problems and issues - be they medical legal, be they related to the patient or the family structure. A staggering 70 percent of Americans die in hospitals today (Ref.8). Hospitals, physicians and nurses, joined Hospice in a combined effort called Palliative Medicine. A new medical specialty been created which is presently increasing the number of physician training positions to meet the demands of a different patient population whose needs must be met once a curative or health enhancing effect can not be obtained. Landmark cases have received worlwide attention. New medical definitions and new judicial pronouncements have concurrently introduced new terminology and required documents that medical translators and interpreters must be conversant with.

Resumen: For nine years now, the Dictionnaire de la comptabilité et de la gestión financiére (the "Ménard"), published by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants with the collaboration of the Ordre des experts-comptables de France and the Instituí des Réviseurs d'Entreprises de Belgique, has been a vital working tool for English-French and French-English translators in the fields of accounting and finance. The "Red Bible" as it is sometimes called has sold about 20,000 copies (paper and CD-ROM). Over three quarters of these copies were sold in Canadá and approximately 3,000 in Europe. A number of American translators purchased the dictionary, mainly by ordering it from Canadá. All in all, taking account of the 1977 and 1982 editions, sales have totalled over 50,000 copies. Not bad for an accounting dictionary! Work on a new edition began in 1999 and should be completed in 2004. With this eagerly awaited update, the terminological and lexicographical project launched ten years ago will have reached maturity. The paper begins by providing background information on the 2004 Dictionnaire bilingüe comptable et fmancier and shows how a project initiated to resolve local concerns evolved over the years into a multinational dictionary. It presents the features of the next edition and discusses the development process, focusing on how the globalization of capital markets and accounting standard-setting, as well as technology are being taken into account.

Resumen: We presented a paper entlited Proofreading chinese and english translation: changing in changing times al the ATA annual conference in Atlanta last year, which aroused strong responses and stimulating discussion. therefore, as a follow-up, this paper will expand on this topic with an attempt to discuss the (controversial, but necessary) relationship between four essential parties: the translator, the proofreader, the translation agency, and the client. sensitive as the topic may be, this may be beneficial to all to bring to the open and confront some of the underlying but unspoken issues that have troubled and obstructed productivity among talentedpeople. Rather than "Keeping the cat in the bag", unveiling the mystery (or reality) will foster further stimulating discussion at the workshop among the four parties at the conference. We hope this will improve the quality of the chinese translation stateside. We also hop this will strengthen the contention that working with domestic or resident translators and proofreaders is beneficial to the translation agency and the ultimate client and a worthy investment towards quality. Within the relationship of the four parties, lie several sub-relationships: the relationship between the translation agency and the translator; between the translator and the proofreader; between the translator and proofreader and the translation agency; and the translator and proofreader and the translation agency and the client. How shall we deal with these relationship? Is it possible al all to create a congenial relationship among the parties or is it just an "idealistic" dream as some may call it? If it is possible, what are the approaches we may take to set up a congenial and workable relationship between the different parties? We understand that this topic of relationship will also involve business opportunities, confidentiality issues, professional ethics, and related cultural matters. How shall we look at and deal with these issues? How shall the parties, whith joint efforts, work towards a common goal -turning out quality translation work? These are the questions and issues we would like to address and hope to spawn productive and stimulating discussions with the audience.

This is because the Regulatory Documents (Codes, Standards, Specifications, Recommended Practices, etc.) made effective by an authorized body, govermment or non-goverment, are the most reliable source of most rigorous terminology to be established in a particular area of technology.

Resumen: It is well known in the fíeld of Foreign Language teaching that our undergraduate students should develop the so-called four skills: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. However, the ever-increasing needs of our society, among other factors, have determined that the aforementioned skills are not enough. Our students and graduates are called upon to perform translation and interpreting work, teach short courses in specific training áreas (construction, health, law enforcement, etc.) and serve the community with their skills. It is then, sometimes to their surprise, that they realize their training-practice has not been enough: they do not master the culture or the nuances of the foreign language variant they are supposed to transíate from/into. Taking this into consideration, this work presents a number of ideas for undergraduate training, including exercises and experiences, in order to fill the existing gap between undergraduate and gradúate interpreters' and translators' training.
