Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. Resumen: Qu'est-ce que traduire? Pour les profanes, c'est trouver des correspondances dans une autre langue. Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: Este trabajo aborda uno de los aspectos fundamentales de la narrativa de la novelista británica Jane Austen: su especial uso del lenguaje; aspecto que, no obstante, ha recibido escasa atención investigadora. Asimismo, se analizan los términos y elementos más significativos de su obra, así como diversas traducciones que para ellos proponen algunos traductores. Se presta especial atención a los vocablos que plantean dificultades de comprensión, tanto en su lengua de origen como en su trasvase al español. Entre las razones que explican esta dificultad no solo se encuentra el cambio de significado, propiciado por el irremediable paso del tiempo en la lengua, sino también el personal uso que Austen hacía del idioma, el cual empleaba de forma precisa y, en muchas ocasiones, con una función caracterizadora de personajes.

Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Durante mucho tiempo y con demasiada frecuencia relegada en el desarrollo de las lenguas, la traducción era considerada como un pasaje de palabras o de frases de un idioma a palabras o frases de otro. Ahora bien, el camino que lleva a la correcta traducción supone la interpretación de los textos y recurrir a conocimientos extralingüísticos. El objetivo es que las ideas desarrolladas en este libro no sean solo entendidas en el plano teórico sino que tengan consecuencias en el modo de enseñar la traducción y, por consiguiente, en su práctica. La traducción, del original francés, fue realizada por la Trad. Públ. Beatriz Rodriguez, ex presidenta del CTPCBA y actual directora de la Carrera de Traductor Público de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Resumen: Medical Translation Step by Step provides a pedagogical approach to medical translation based on learner and learning-centred teaching tasks, revolving around interaction: pair and group work to carry out the tasks and exercises to practice the points covered. These include work on declarative and operative knowledge of both translation and medical texts and favour an approach that takes into account both the process and product of translations. Starting from a broad communication framework, the book follows a top-down approach to medical translation: communication--genres--texts--terms and other units of specialized knowledge. It is positively focused in that it does not insist on error analysis, but rather on ways of writing good translations and empowering both students and teachers.

Resumen: Cada traductor hace de la obra que traduce un problema de lectura y un problema de escritura, y toma decisiones particulares que hacen que la obra traducida sea también única: abriendo a la vez, con su acto de traducción, el camino hacia las variaciones (versiones) que puedan venir. En el acto de traducción, la actividad de la lectura y de la escritura no pueden separarse e implican mucho más que un saber teórico o saberes específicos. El traductor entra en una relación particular con la obra, no es él un lector desprevenido. Es un lector que busca conocer la obra en todos sus aspectos y, como receptor, aunque llega a conocerla profundamente, duda de su saber en el momento de la escritura. ¿En qué espacio entonces debería situarse el traductor para realizar su trabajo de manera óptima? En un espacio que contenga la originalidad del autor, la subjetividad y la espontaneidad del lector, el rigor del traductor y la originalidad del traductor-escritor. Para cada obra particular, el traductor se vería en la necesidad de construir ese espacio sobre el cual se desliza su escritura. Son estos los problemas principales abordados en este libro.

Resumen: In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.
